This will sound really weird, but one of my favorite little things about Windows is the way the desktop grays out after certain events occur with the operating system.

I realize that the amount of intelligence and programming it took to make that happen is probably less than it takes to operate my Texas Instruments calculator back in high school.

I don’t really know why I like it so much, I just do. There’s no real functionality in it, I just like it.

What are some of the unsung features you love in Windows that nobody else on Earth probably even realizes exists? But for you, if it weren’t there, there would be a little binary hole somewhere in your life?

The Simple Things – Fade to Gray Desktop

Before Ray was with Microsoft he was with IBM and Notes. But in-between he built what I thought was one of the most funky cool amazing things called Groove. You can think of Groove (at least as it was then) as a P2P “team workspace” with really nice encryption, SDK, pricing model, UI, etc. The technology was gorgeous, and the power of it was really impressive. We’re talking shared documents, built-in voice conferencing, whiteboarding, project management, etc. And all that run over a peer-to-peer architecture with high encryption and more cool stuff that I can no longer recall.

I’m wondering if he was just playing it under-the-radar until Gates got more out of the picture. Microsoft’s recent announcement about sharing key software API’s and code sure looks like a giant step towards a more open corporate methodology. Is it purely to satiate and satisfy the EU?

Reader Poll: Should Microsoft Buy Yahoo?

I’m at a meeting a few days ago and someone hands me their computer to use their Internet. I notice that the Language bar toolbar is displayed. I think to myself and wonder if anyone actually uses this.

Normally when I see it on someone’s computer I turn it off and hide it to give them more screen real-estate on their task bar. I’ve yet to meet or talk to someone that actually uses it. Why is this set as default being on?

Do you?

I just bought a nice, new headset to use with Skype, maybe I’ll play around with the available language options within Windows. Maybe I could start dictating my blog posts to Windows and stop typing them.

Does Anyone Actually Use the Language Bar?

Not a whole lot of response yet, but still my thoughts are how much purchasing impact is this having on the existing Xbox users shopping?

As with my example, there were a number of games we were looking at purchasing this year as gifts for my son. Sure, we’ll more than likely still purchase them at some point, but as of now, our plan is to hold off until the Xbox 360 is fixed.

I’m interested in hearing how this is impacting current shoppers that may or may not own an Xbox already. Let me know in our current poll:

Halo 3 Let Down

Robert Aitchison has an interesting poll on his website asking who’s the most evil and Microsoft didn’t win!

Microsoft isn’t exactly in the best of company with their competitors on the poll. I think the only people missing are Hitler, the Taliban and Enron.
