SEGA waxes nostalgic, to release Ultimate Mega Drive Collection for Xbox 360, PS3

PC World Australia may have beaten me to the punch, but the news about SEGA’s impending release of the Ultimate Mega Drive Collection for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is still news.
Late last year, the SEGA Ultimate Mega Drive Collection had merely been a rumor. Now, it’s a reality, and it’s coming to video game store shelves this January 26, at least in Australia. Is it also slated for release in North America and Europe? I really have no idea.
All I know is what’s in the SEGA Ultimate Mega Drive Collection. Here’s a partial rundown: Sonic the Hedgehog (1, …read more

Even the iPhone is going retro

I know, I know … it was only a matter of time before the powerful allure of the past caught up with the equally powerful pull of the future, but the news is surprising nonetheless. Yes, retro games are now available for the iPhone, the 4.5 inch by 2.4 inch by 0.48 inch marvel of technology created by Apple, and have been for some time now.\r\n\r\nIGN\’s Levi Buchanan gives us the lowdown on retro video games on the iPhone:\r\n\r\n
The iPhone may be the newest gaming rig on the field, but it\’s starting to host its fair share of yesteryear. Some …read more

Gordon Freeman in Mario Land #2

Okay, okay, wait! Before you bash my head in with that axe after showing you a bad video about Gordon Freeman’s adventure in the world of Super Mario Brothers, I want you to take a look at these videos and tell me which is better:

Well, regardless of which video you choose, one thing’s for certain: They’re both better than the video I showed you in my previous posting, Gordon Freeman in Mario Land.
My only beef with the guys who did the modifications is the way they presented the world of Super Mario Brothers. Come on! The game Super Mario Brothers …read more

Gordon Freeman in Mario Land

Ever heard of crossovers? In comic books, sure, crossovers are a dime a dozen. In the past dozen or so years, we’ve seen crossovers within the same universe, like Superman versus Lobo for the DC Universe and Spiderman versus The Hulk in the Marvel Universe, and between universes, such as the DC versus Marvel crossover, which has resulted in the creation of the Amalgam Universe.
Waitaminute! This blog isn’t about comic books! Duh! It’s about retro and classic video games. So where are the crossovers in the video gaming realm? Believe it or not, the most well known crossover in this …read more

Watch Samus dance the Metroid

I almost feel sorry about posting this video of our favorite interstellar bounty hunter Samus Aran dancing to the beat of Usher’s Yeah after reading good friend PJ Punla’s comment on my most recent article on b5media technology blog MMOtaku titled Girl gamers gaining ground in MMOs.
The temptation, however, is hard to pass up, especially if you’ve seen Max Payne dance. Eerie and freaky.
So without further ado, I present you Metroid’s Samus Aran dancing to Usher’s Yeah:

Tetris, according to Guillaume Reymond

You may already be sick of Tetris, especially after staring at the world’s largest game of Tetris (maybe because the blocks are of the same color?), but I’m back with another Tetris video.
This video is a classic. Made by Guillaume Reymond of the Gameover Project, the video is no laughing matter as it uses stop-motion photography and a dozen or so men and women. Yes! Live human beings!
Go check out the video and tell me afterward if it doesn’t command respect:

Playing Tetris on a building facade

No. I’m not the one who came up with the kooky idea of turning an entire building into a pseudo-monitor just to play what is probably the biggest Tetris game in the universe (unless there’s some alien race out there who implemented the same idea several years ago).
Here’s the description that came with the video of the World’s Largest Tetris:
Take a Linux computer, a joystick-frequency radio, 10,000 Christmas lights, a building, and you have the biggest game of Tetris in the world. Here is the largest Tetris game made with lights in a building. Amazing!
The author of the video neglected …read more

Pac-Man in Super Mario Brothers world

Our favorite pellet-chomping, ghost-nipping machine is back in another video. This time, however, Pac-Man seems to be lost in another world, that of the Super Mario Brothers. Check out this fan-made video and find out what happens when Pac-Man meets the Super Mario Brothers:

I have to give credit to guys like YouTube user blairwja who seek to break the monotony of retro gaming by providing us with great and entertaining fan fiction. Now, if only someone comes up with a video of the Super Mario Brothers on a romp in the Mega Man world.

Fusion: NES and Game & Watch

Here’s something interesting that has eluded my attention these past six or so months that I’ve been handling Re:Retro. It’s the Game & Watch Gallery for the Nintendo Game Boy. Gosh, talk about taking advantage (in a good way, of course) of intellectual property rights. Nintendo, in a brilliant move, swiped remade four Game & Watch classics to feature present-day video game icons, including Mario and Donkey Kong Jr., and to play on the Game Boy.
Let’s take a closer look at the four games:
Manhole: Like in the original Game & Watch classic, you have a few people walking across a …read more

Haha! I suck at Space Invaders, too

What a surprise! I’ve just discovered that I suck at Space Invaders, a couple of days after learning that Frogger isn’t as easy to play now as it was back in the 80s.
It’s a surprise because I play Chicken Invaders, an arcade-like PC game that parodies Space Invaders. Needless to say, this spinoff is just as successful as the game it mimics. Hooray for Interaction Studios.
Going back to our topic, I played Space Invaders not on the Atari 2600 (on which I spent countless hours kicking alien butt back in the 80s), but on a Flash animation version made by …read more
