I am not surprised receiving news alert about ‘Microsoft Office on iPhone’ from Fortune’s Big Tech by Jon Fortt.

Microsoft had already been working Apple in providing the Office Suite for Mac with Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit (MacBu) which recently launched last January 2008 its Office for Mac 2008.

A team of Microsoft’s Software Engineers examines the released software development kit (SDK) by Apple allowing developers to create applications for both iPhone and iPod Touch.

“It’s really important for us to understand what we can bring to the iPhone,” Tom Gibbons, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Specialized Devices and Applications Group, told Fortune on Monday. “To the extent that Mac Office customers have functionality that they need in that environment, we’re actually in the process of trying to understand that now.” [source]

Why not? What currently some iPhone software allow is just reading of documents but not editing. Extending the functionalities of Microsoft Office to iPhone more than just reading would mean another venture for the MacBu. Well, let’s hope that this will become a reality.

Here’s another great thing to checkout this coming weekend, especially for web developers. Microsoft Live Labs currently released a developer toolset that helps build multi-tier web applications, it is called Volta. Volta debuts under technology preview and you can check more updates about this new toolset in their blog. Here’s some excerpt of their first blog entry:

Volta’s declarative tier-splitting enables developers to postpone architectural decisions about distribution until the last possible responsible moment. Also, thanks to a shared programming model across multiple-tiers, Volta enables new end-to-end profiling and testing for higher levels of application performance, robustness, and reliability. Using the declarative tier-splitting, developers can refine architectural decisions based on this profiling data. This saves time and costs associated with manual refactoring. In effect, Volta extends the .NET platform to further enable the development of software+services applications, using existing and familiar tools and techniques.

You architect and build your application as a .NET client application, assigning the portions of the application that run on the server tier and client tier late in the development process. You can target either web browsers or the CLR as clients and Volta handles the complexities of tier-splitting. The compiler creates cross-browser JavaScript for the client tier, web services for the server tier, and all communication, serialization, synchronization, security, and other boilerplate code to tie the tiers together. In effect, Volta offers a best-effort experience in multiple environments without requiring tailoring of the application.

So, don’t forget to check it out this weekend and please refer this new tool to your friends or colleagues who are web developers by profession. I will try this for sure. Thank you.

Flickr now offers online photo editing after months ago of its initial news release. Flickr partnered with Picnik, an online tool which provides powerful photo editing capabilities. According to Flickr’s blog:

Picnik has been providing online photo editing for a while now. As soon as we saw it, we knew that there was huge potential for us to join together. Rather than Flickr diverting from our speciality to enter a realm we had no (particular) expertise in, the thought of a partnership seemed much more sensible.

The Picnik/Flickr collaboration works similarly to other 3rd party services who’ve built additional tools on top of the Flickr API: You’ll need to pass through the step of giving the Picnik service permission to edit and save your photos… It’s a little bit like you’re “installing” Picnik on your Flickr account, but with nothing to download.

The photo above shows the before and after editing images, you can also see the above circle where you can click to edit photos in Flickr.

Yeah, only Windows and Mac. Sad. Hope they will support Linux as well, soon. :D Don’t forget to check it out, http://silverlight.live.com/ for more details about this service.

Microsoft has been there to help us deliver rich contents over the internet to reach wide scope of viewers. And, with online streaming, competition is rough and Microsoft plays a big role in the market, I suppose.
With the Microsoft Expression Media, comes the Expression Encoder, which allows rich media publishing an easy task with Silverlight. Last month, I posted about what Silverlight is and you can check it here. Below are its key features:

Encoding for EveryoneExpression Encoder’s accessible, friendly user interface gives designers, editors and producers the ability to generate gorgeous VC-1-encoded content wrapped in a Silverlight experience. The same encoding engine can be controlled via command line for compressionists churning through high-volume, repetitive encoding chores.

Check more about the Microsoft Expression Encoder and try publishing now with Silverlight.

Project Joey, enables you to bring and organize web contents to your mobile phone.
The premise is this: you can use Firefox to send text clippings, pictures, videos, RSS content, and Live Bookmarks to your phone through the Joey Server. The Joey Server transcodes and keeps all of the content up-to-date.
