There’s a bit of a stir going on over in the Middle East and, for once, it doesn’t involve the Palestinians and Israelis.

Pope Benedict XVI, who went to the region to help build Church ties to both Muslims and Jews, has managed to upset people of all faiths including Christians.

Most recently, the Pope visited the Holocaust museum and according to the Reuters news agency:

At the Yad Vashem ceremony, the pope spoke of the “horrific tragedy of the Shoah”, the Hebrew term for the Holocaust, but disappointed some Jewish religious leaders who said he should have apologised as a German and a Christian for the genocide.

Some Jewish leaders cited the Pope’s membership in a Nazi youth group as a reason for expecting a more contrite pontiff.

In an effort to play down the controversy, a Vatican spokesman said the Pope “never, never, never” was in the Hitler Youth.

When reminded that the Pope himself had written in his memoirs that he was a member of the group, the spokesman maintained, “”The Hitler Youth is not a significant experience in his life because he was not an active participant. It was just something that was done.”

The spokesman reiterated that good Catholics should “never, never, never” have premarital sex, but had no comment as to whether there was a loophole if you weren’t an “active participant.”
