Power Rankings: Week of 10/8 – 10/14

1. Jeff Gordon (1) – The 24 car continued its 2008 dominance with a win at Talladega to move into the front of the points standings. Gordon also became the all-time restrictor plate race winner and is making a seriously healthy and convincing bid for his fifth Cup Championship.
2. Jimmie Johnson (2) – Johnson nearly came out of Alabama with his seventh win of ’08, but was derailed by his Hendrick teammate in the closing laps. The 48 Lowe’s machine still came home second, but Gordon’s victory was enough to send Johnson to second in the standings.
3. Tony Stewart (3) …read more

Fair Is Fair – Or Is It?

On Sunday, September 23rd, Carl Edwards picked up his third victory of the season at Dover International Speedway, and it couldn’t have come at a better time … just two races into his bid for the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Championship.  Edwards later went on to fail post-race inspection as his car did not meet NASCAR’s minimum car heights according to the series rulebook.  As a result, the driver of the No. 99 was penalized 25 driver points and Crew Chief Bob Osborne was fined $25,000 for the incident.  The penalty assessed by NASCAR took him from third place in …read more

Juan Pablo Montoya – Good for NASCAR?

Juan Pablo Montoya came to NASCAR with visions of winning in short order. I think it’s fair to say at this point in time, he’s a little behind schedule. And that’s to be expected. Montoya is without a doubt, a very talented driver, but as others have learned, being excellent in one race series doesn’t necessarily translate over to NASCAR. Steve Kinser comes to mind because he tried to make the transition from sprint cars but decided to leave NASCAR after only 5 races because he was averaging 35th while driving for Kenny Bernstein.
On the other hand, there are numerous …read more

Testing Policy Getting Neutered

Testing Policy Getting Neutered

It looks like NASCAR is finally waking up the fact that their testing policy was almost a useless policy, simply because teams went and tested at non-NASCAR-sanctioned race tracks. The only down side to this was that teams had to use non-Goodyear tires, so many went and purchased B.F. Goodrich race tires, simply for testing purposes. This caused a two-fold problem.
First, Goodyear is the “official” sponsor of NASCAR as such, the only supplier of tires for the race teams when racing or practicing on NASCAR-sanctioned race tracks. So in this case, teams went and spent money on tire manufacturers (B.F. …read more

NASCAR Sponsorship Controversy

NASCAR Sponsorship Controversy

There is more controversy at NASCAR. AT&T is reportedly suing NASCAR over Jeff Burton’s use of the Cingular logo on the 31 RCR car.
My question – Is Cingular gone yet? My cell phone still says Cingular. If this is not a done deal and Cingular still exists, what is AT&T doing?
And then there is Nextel who doesn’t want any mention of AT&T. Someone needs to explain to me why Cingular is ok but AT&T is not as far as Nextel is concerned.
Didn’t the government once make AT&T break up it’s strangle hold on the communications industry?

Robbie Gordon – AGAIN!

Robbie Gordon shouldn’t be driving anywhere. He is not a good driver! Besides that, he’s a whiner. This time he took out two other cars and as is usually the case, he and his car are fine. He doesn’t just need to go to the big NASCAR trailer, he needs to go to NASCAR jail!
