Husky Fever

The Washington Huskies are playing pretty good right now. A 6-1 conference record and a gratifying W over UCLA on Saturday has some folks starting to talk about this team. Even I’ve noticed. Save a few bad efforts earlier in the season against Portland and Kansas, the Huskies are playing some of the best basketball out of anyone. Of course workhorse Jon Brockman is probably the most notable player. This 6′7 double-double machine goes about his business with a swag that’s noticeable, yet calming. Fellow senior Justin Dentmon is really shooting the rock …read more

Calvin Henry’s block party

Mercer Bear senior forward Calvin Henry nearly recorded a triple-double on Friday night in a victory against Florida Gulf Coast.
17 points
8-11 fg
12 rebounds
9 blocks
Calvin carried a healthy 2.4 blk/gm into Friday night’s action, along with 11ppg and 7 reb/gm. Mercer is now 3-0 when Henry blocks 5 or more shots in a game (crunched the numbers on this one).

Pitt’s Big Three and then…

Despite the return of the big three for Pitt, serious questions of front court depth and back court competence still persist.
Not only did Mike Cook get a no go for another year of eligibility, but quality guards Ronald Ramon and Keith Benjamin graduated.
Everyone knows what to expect from tough minded Levance Fields, but what if Levance cannot shake the concerning foot injury suffered last year? Unheralded freshman Travon Woodall can’t be expected to help the team right the ship, maybe in a pinch, but it’s not likely because of the lack of experience and firepower at the …read more

Window of Opportunity

When I began this prediction assortment, cometh straight from my crystal ball, no way-no how I saw coming a Northwestern Wildcat yearning. But if paper sheds any truth for this upcoming season, Big Ten basketball teams look to either ‘have’, or ‘have not’.
When coming up with a spot to slide NW into, I took into account the scoring punch returning for each team.
Northwestern ranks high in the returning scorers category, only Purdue ranks higher. Only Purdue and Northwestern return at least three players who scored in double figures last season. Scoring isn’t exactly the staple of …read more

Missing in action

The crystal ball led me to another wild predicament.
But the news concerned a different Wildcat squad than the one previously mentioned.
It didn’t have to end up like this.
Prediction #2
2) Arizona will struggle to remain one of the top teams in the Pac 10 and shockingly, will miss the Big Dance. I see this team suffering through another season in which productive bodies off the bench are nonexistent. Last year’s Zona squad made Kentucky look like a deep group.
The top 15 recruiting class doesn’t look as enticing on paper anymore, but will …read more
