Team BMW Sauber has been sold again, only this time back to the man who originally sold it to them in 2005 and founded the team in 1993, Peter Sauber. This will mark the end of a four year run in Formula One for BMW and one that has had a marginal level of success. This deal is a good one for the employees who were probably wondering what the future held, at least now most of the employees will be able to keep their jobs. This definitely strengthens the position of the team and gives them a new challenge going forward. Peter has always had a good relationship with his employees and I expect the team to prosper under his care and possibly have a good run at the championship.

In other news, Force India will still have the team of Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi behind the wheel for the 2010 season. The duo had a pretty good year overall and I expect their results to get even better in 2010 and beyond. Adrian Sutil will be in his fourth consecutive year behind the wheel of their car and in 2009 he was able to get his first top five finish with a fourth place in Italy. Formula One is an international sport with drivers from all corners of the world and it’s great to see a team like Force India employing the best drivers they can find without regard to nationality or race. Dr Vijay Mallya has done a great job so far and at the rate he’s learning the sport, it won’t be long before he’ll be one of the best in the business doing his job.

Renault lifted the veil around their plans for the scheduled Jerez test, next week. They’ll be fielding a truly international field of drivers for the three days of testing, with Chinese driver Ho-Pin, Formula Renault 3.5 champion Bertrand Baguette, and French racer Lucas Di Grassi taking their turns behind the wheel. Ho-Pin is scheduled to have his try to impress behind the wheel of the R29 on Wednesday, just behind Baguette, and Di Grassi will go last. The three day session is set for December 1 to December 3, so mark the days on your calendar.

GM CEO Fritz Henderson announced last night that Pontiac will be shut down indefinitely. Executives say that the move is just the first in many drastic measures needed to help the company survive the recession.

GM CEO Fritz Henderson

Pontiac is scheduled to be shut down next year after inventories are eventually cleared. This news comes as a surprise to many analysts who know that Pontiac was GM’s third best selling make. Other GM subsidiaries like Saturn, Saab, and Hummer are also on the razors edge as they too may be downsized or closed completely. The reason why Pontiac was chosen for the axe was due to profitability concerns. Pontiac was not making GM a substantial enough profit.

21,000 jobs are expected to be cut in the coming months when the company closes its doors. Pontiac was introduced by GM in 1927 with the Pontiac Chief and has been a symbol of power ever since.

Okay let’s talk frankly about this. The reason why the automakers are in trouble is not because their cars aren’t selling, Pontiac is proof of that, it’s because of bad inefficient managerial structuring. If GM were to hand over Pontiac to a small car company who can manage the profits better, they would thrive. But let’s face it GM would rather shut them down than admit their inefficiency and sell them off. Perhaps they are afraid that Pontiac would be profitable for someone else and become a strong competition. Instead they’ll get cut and with no intent of bringing them back in the future. Sad.

In a report entitled “Securing Cyberspace in the 44th Presidency,” the US Commission on Cybersecurity is said to recommend the setting up of a Center for Cybersecurity Operations to protect military, government, and corporate electronics from criminals and other nations. Support from the US President-elect Barack Obama in establishing the new body is not doubted because he earlier pledged the appointment of a “national cyber advisor” if elected.

Following in an excerpt from the Business Week article:

The report calls for the creation of a Center for Cybersecurity Operations that would act as a new regulator of computer security in both the public and private sector. Active policing of government and corporate networks would include new rules and a “red team” to test computers for vulnerabilities now being exploited with increasing sophistication and frequency by identity and credit card thieves, bank fraudsters, crime rings, and electronic spies.

Business Week quotes Tom Kellermann, who had a role in crafting the US cybersecurity strategy in 2003: “We’re playing a giant game of chess now and we’re losing badly.” In the recent past there have been break-ins in Homeland Security, information loss in DOD and a few other “incidents”. The most recent one was the attack by a malware called agent.btz which afflicted both military and corporate networks.

Some of the attacks are considered to have come not just from organized gangs but also with backing from other governments. Read the Business Week article for more details.
