The President of USA Today announced his retirement on Tuesday of last week and the news was promptly splashed across a special weekend edition of the national paper along with the rest of the stories which are traditionally reported two days after most Internet news outlets.

Publisher Craig Moon is the latest casualty among the nation’s besieged newspapers which are facing diminishing readership and slumping ad revenues. Moon announced he will be pursuing “other opportunities in media” which include using newspapers for origami and as a base for mulching your garden.

The CEO of Gannett Co. which owns USA Today, said in a statement,”Craig has been a steady hand and a defender of strong journalism .. in his six years as president and publisher of our flagship newspapers.”

“You have no idea how hard that is when you’re working for a paper that believes every news story can be reduced to a three-color pie chart.”

Mr. Moon has not ruled out making a move to another industry. “With my background in print journalism, I feel I have a lot to offer to rotary phone manufacturers and those companies that make bicycles with the big front wheel.”

Scripps Publishing Closes Rocky Mountain News After Losing $16 Million; Failing to Find Buyer

The Denver Post is now the only major newspaper in Colorado after the Rocky Mountain News today published its final print edition. The paper has been a fixture of the Mile High City since it was founded in 1849.

So, starting tomorrow you won’t be able to buy the Rocky Mountain News but you’ll still be able to buy Rocky Mountain oysters.*.

Damn. That’s messed up.

*According to the McReynolds Farms website Rocky Mountain oysters are “delicious sliced, breaded, and deep-fried” … and if you don’t know what the hell you’re eating.
