1. St. Louis Rams
The Rams are just horrible. Their defense showed some signs of improvement early on but they’ve regressed in recent weeks. Their offense? It’s offensive.

2. Oakland Raiders
The Raiders don’t have a horrible defense but their offense is so bad that they earn this spot in the NFL power rankings. JaMarcus Russell has been putrid and makes it almost impossible for Oakland to win.

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
When it comes to the offensive side of the field, the Bucs have decent talent. But add in poor coaching, poor chemistry and a bad defense and this team is embarrassing.

Antonio Bryant and the Bucs haven't won a game (Image: Zuma Press)

4. Cleveland Browns
Even though the Browns pulled out an ugly win last week, they are still a very bad team. Don’t expect this team to win more than a handful of contests all year.

5. Detroit Lions
A year after not winning a game, the Lions are still bad. But compared to last year, there are definite signs of improvement.

6. Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs don’t have much talent — and it shows on the field. Their rebuilding project is immense.

7. Tennessee Titans
A year after making the playoffs, the Titans are 0-5. Their team isn’t horrible but their defense has been exposed and their offense is much less explosive.

8. Carolina Panthers
This Panthers squad could still possibly turn it around but it needs its star players to play better.

9. Buffalo Bills
Why is this team so bad? They have very good talent offensively. Their defense can play. But for whatever reason, they can’t put it together.

10. Washington Redskins
The only reason the Redskins are 2-3 is because they’ve had a very easy schedule. Once their schedule toughens up, expect the losses to mount.

On the season, McFadden has 145 rushing yards, 53 receiving yards and one touchdown. His yards per carry of 3.1 yards is a very underwhelming number for the Raiders.

Offensively, the Raiders have simply been horrible. JaMarcus Russell has a quarterback rating of 42.4. He’s completing 39.8% of his passes and has one touchdown to go with four interceptions. The 6-foot-6, 260-pound quarterback couldn’t play much worse if he tried.

To replace McFadden, the Raiders will likely turn to the tandem of Justin Fargas and Michael Bush. Fargas and Bush both had success last season, so there’s a chance that they can fill in for McFadden adequately. But, that said, Oakland’s problems run much deeper.

In Week 1 against the Raiders, the 30-year-old running back rushed 13 times for 55 yards and a touchdown. At the end of the game, Tomlinson was forced to watch the game from the sidelines. In his pace, backup running back Darren Sproles scored the game’s winning touchdown.

Keep an eye on whether Tomlinson will practice prior to Week 2. As it sounds now, he thinks he’s going to play. If Tomlinson doesn’t, Sproles would be the starter.

Seymour didn’t report right away and there were rumors that Seymour would hold out until he was given a new contract. However, all the drama will reportedly soon come to an end.

ESPN is reporting that Seymour is going to show up in Oakland on Saturday. He won’t receive a new contract and will instead play out the final year of his contract, which is worth about $3.7 million. Even though he’ll be joining the team for the first time on Saturday, Seymour is expected to play on Monday night in Oakland’s Week 1 showdown against the San Diego Chargers.

For the Raiders, this was a good end to a potentially disastrous situation. They had already given the Patriots a 2011 first round pick for Seymour and were possibly going to lose that draft pick without getting anything in return.

Seymour doesn’t get his contract extension but he’s no longer risking being suspended and losing his 2009 salary. Heading into next year’s free agency, Seymour will be one of the most sought after free agents.

Big trades in the NFL are relatively rare. But on Sunday, the New England Patriots and the Oakland Raiders completed a major swap when the Patriots sent Seymour to the Raiders for an unprotected 2011 first round pick.

For the Raiders, this trade will help right away. Seymour has been one of the best defensive lineman in the game of football since being drafted in 2001. The 29-year-old will solidify Oakland’s defense — especially against the run.

The Patriots, on the other hand, continue their youth movement on the defensive end. While losing Seymour will hurt in the short term, most every scout agrees that Seymour’s best days are behind him. New England will plug in a couple young players in his place for the time being. However, the big pay off will come when that unprotected first round pick arrives. Given how bad Oakland has been in recent years, there’s a chance that the pick from the Raiders is a top five selection.

In 2008, Seymour finished with 52 tackles and eight sacks. The tackles were the most he’s had in a season since 2003, while the sacks tied a career-high. For the Raiders to get their money’s worth, they are undoubtedly hoping for at least a few more similar seasons from the 6-foot-6, 310-pounder out of Georgia.

It’s difficult to find any bright spot on this team. A lot of solid pieces but the strengths are minimal.

The offense will likely struggle and the defense isn’t that good. They have to hope for a big year from their offensive line to compete.

After going 0-16 last season, the Lions need to show they aren’t historically bad before they rise out of last.

While Schilens isn’t a well-known player, he was actually playing very well for the Raiders during training camp. In fact, he appeared to be in a position where he could have been a starting wide receiver in Week 1.
The 6-foot-4 out of San Diego State had 15 catches last season for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Picked in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Schilens has proven to be [...]
Post from: EveryJoe

Chaz Schilens, a wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders, suffered a broken foot during practice on Tuesday. His left foot broke while in the middle of running a route.

Picked in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Schilens has proven to be a quality prospect.

With Schilens sidelined, it’ll be interesting to see who steps forward and wins the starting wide receiving jobs. One player who would seem likely to start is first round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey. That said, the rookie has had a number of drops and the team may think that he’s not ready to play right away.

Javon Walker is a veteran option at wide receiver put he had surgery in the offseason on his knee and still hasn’t gotten on the practice field.

Bill Belichick is one coach who doesn’t have to worry about his job. Also consider that Belichick likes players who can play multiple positions. Could Vick have Randy Moss type success with the Patriots?

San Francisco 49ers
The Niners are arguably the most desperate team in the league when it comes to the quarterback position. If Vick is serious about playing — and playing quickly — the Niners make a lot of sense.

Oakland Raiders
Doesn’t this situation just scream Al Davis. The only reason why Davis might not want Vick is due to the presence of JaMarcus Russell — a current Al Davis favorite.

Minnesota Vikings
Now that the Vikings have officially (well, as official as anything can be with the person at hand) lost their bid to woo Brett Favre out of retirement, Vick’s name will undoubtedly come up in Minnesota.

After first trying to trade him, the Cowboys decided to release him to save money and open up an opportunity for young players. On Monday, Ellis found a new home — with the Oakland Raiders.

Ellis lands with the Raiders less than two weeks after being released. The Raiders likely targeted Ellis due to his ability to rush the quarterback and his versatility. He has experience both on the defensive line and at linebacker.

After being a first round pick in the 1998 NFL Draft (ahead of Randy Moss, for those Cowboys fans who are scoring at home), Ellis went on to have a productive 11-season stint. In eight of those 11 seasons, Ellis had at least six sacks. In the last two seasons alone, the 6-foot-6, 262-pounder out of North Carolina racked up 20.5 sacks.

For his career, Ellis has 496 tacks, 77 sacks, 21 forced fumbles and four interceptions.

A few weeks ago, it appeared that JaMarcus Russell had the starting quarterback job for the Oakland Raiders locked up. However, after recent comments by Jeff Garcia, that doesn’t sound as certain.
On a radio show, Garcia said that Russell should be the starting quarterback in Oakland — but only if Russell legitimately wins the gig. Otherwise, if Garcia wins the job, the 39-year-old QB isn’t ready to simply accept a backup job.

Despite Garcia’s comments, it seems all but certain the coaching staff in Oakland will pick Russell as their starting quarterback. And if you believe certain rumors, the coaches might not have much choice. Owner Al Davis is reportedly a big fan of Russell’s and wants him to start. As we all know, what Al Davis wants in Oakland, Al Davis gets.

For Garcia, his best chance to play in the 2009 NFL season is if Russell struggles or gets hurt.
