We can’t claim to be surprised by this rumor about Olympics coverage.
The fake fireworks and lip-synching Chinese girl didn’t escape our notice, so hats off to Frank Coffey and the Goodfellas at eTrueSports (yes, we’re the only ones who call them that; no, we haven’t the slightest notion why) for going the extra step. Their heads-up journalism added this little nugget to Beijing’s optical illusion repertoire.

If poor Yang Peiyi ends up in therapy because she’s convinced she was beaten up by an ugly stick for the first 7 years of her life, she’ll have the Olympic bigwigs in China to thank.
According to those who ran the Opening Ceremonies in Beijing, Peiyi has a face for radio. Blessed with a voice so lovely they had her sing “Ode to the Motherland,” she had a lip-synching stand-in at the mike. Nine-year-old Lin Miaoke, a seasoned pro with several commercials under her pint-sized belt, was the face presented to the 70 million viewers who tuned into the event.
