Google Notebook is now available:

Google Notebook makes web research of all kinds – from planning a vacation to researching a school paper to buying a car – easier and more efficient by enabling you to clip and gather information even while you’re browsing the web.

And since Google Notebook lives in your browser, you won’t be left with a scattered collection of notes, Word docs, and browser bookmarks to sort through; all your web findings will be gathering into one organized, easy accessible location that you can access from any computer.

Thanks to Aaron at Emerging Earth for sharing this. He doesn’t understand what the big deal is about the product. I can kind of agree with him, but I also think it could be a great tool for Bloggers to collect information for potential, future blog posts. In those regards, one of the great features I see is automatic source attribution when you save a clip from a webpage. Great idea!

With the announcement that Word 2007 will have built-in blogging support, do you believe this will dramatically increase the amount of blogging activity? It’s not like blogs are slowing down at any point, but how much more of an impact would this have on the blogosphere?

I’ve begun playing around with 3rd party blog editing tools like Qumana and Performancing, but honestly haven’t migrated over to either one of them completely. Too many variations on what to expect from the post when it’s live. For me, saving the the admin link as a favorite to the various blogs I author is just as easy as opening up a separate editor.

But, if I could do everything in Word, that might be the difference to move away from relying on the browser to do the brunt of blog editing. That leads me to two questions:

Doesn’t that contradict the move towards online applications?

Can I rely on Microsoft to not feel my blog with bloated, ugly code? Joe’s post sure makes it look like they’re doing the right thing here.

It seems to me, maybe even the more logical choice to move this type of functionality into Microsoft’s realm is to integrate it with some new Office Live functionality or OneNote! (which is just what Chris Pratley talks about here)

Granted Jason Powell’s review of the usefullness of OneNote is his experience with OneNote 2003 and not the new Office 12 version. However, I wanted to post on his experience for two main reasons:

Does anyone out there have experience comparing the newest version of OneNote 12 with what’s available in EverNote? Are there any comparisons?
Jason highlights the fact that there’s special Microsoft charity pricing available for certain organizations to use Microsoft products at great discounts.

Thoughts anyone? Anyone out there currently using EverNote and/or beta testing OneNote 12?

Are we really in a digital age? I don’t think so, and here’s why. I look around my desk and I still see non-digital information around me. There’s the little post-it note reminding me of something on my monitor, there’s a handful of little steno pads sitting on my desk, there’s my checkbook and a pen sitting next to me, a stack of papers in various folders and sorting trays and of course a stack of business cards as well.

If it were truly a digital age, wouldn’t all of this information be completely housed and accessible via my computer or other electronic devices that connect to the computer or network itself?

OneNote 12 pushes the envelope further into collecting this type of information more easily for users. And not just collecting it, but allowing it to be searchable. What types of data you ask?

Printed documents: anything printed to OneNote via a driver is automatically stored as well as the text being searhable. This doesn’t just include original Microsoft documents, but literally any document that could be printed.

Scanned documents: similar to printed documents above, but anything that’s scanned optically, throught the capabilities of OCR, now become searchable as well

Photos of documents: think about it this way, I take a picture of a billboard, and OneNote can recognize the text on it and make that text searchable. I see this as a handy way to collect information you need with say a camera phone, and use it later. A digital photographic memory!

Screen clippings: grab a screen shot of something you’re viewing on your monitor and have OneNotes OCR (one of 4 included) grab the text and make it searchable.

Audio/Video: you’ve got to be kidding me? I can save an audio/video file to OneNote and it uses phonetic matching from the audio to allow me to search for specific words used in a presentation. I’m curious as to just how well this will work, but if it does…AWESOME!

I can’t wait to get my hands on that beta! Should be downloading and installing later today.

Paul Thurrott continues to provide some great information and insight into Office 12 and all thinks Windows for that matter.

One of the interesting trivia facts he shares in his article is that the initial Microsoft Word had about 100 commands that were accessible through the menu based navigation system. Microsoft Word 2003 on the other hand, has more than 1500! You can quickly understand how some changes in structure and navigation on using those commands effectively would be important.

Over the years, Microsoft has tried to address these problems by adding new user interface elements that expose functionality in more discoverable ways. Task panes, Smart Tags, and smart menus are all examples of these efforts. But these efforts really just maxed the complexity problems in Microsoft Office and were, in Microsoft’s own words, a way to just “paint the pig” and not actually fix the core problem. Clearly, a daring new user interface was required. And about two years ago, Microsoft began working on what would become the new Office 12 user interface.

Paul Thurrott spoke with Jensen Harris and Jacob Jaffe who are intimately involve with the development of Office 12. Through his conversations, he found out that Microsoft was looking to address four core customer needs:

workforce evolution

one world of business

always on, always connected

transparent organizations

Specifically of interest in the workforce evolution was the following quote from Jacob stated:

And the younger generation–those people who are in college today–are using blogging, social networking, and other technologies today in ways that haven’t previously been used in the workforce. As these people enter the workforce, there is an expectation that they will continue to use technology in those new ways. So Office 12 must help both of these groups of people get better results faster.

Obviously it’s a no brainer that blogging and social networking, tagging, and such would be important to the workforce of today and tomorrow. But the question does become, how do you integrate that efficiently so it’s useful and meaningful in an business productivity application environment?

Paul’s thorough review is only Part 1 of what is to come. In the article he goes on to discuss details of Word, Outlook, OneNote and InfoPath, PowerPoint, and Excel.
