There’s no two ways around that. You can be the biggest fan of all time (next to Regis, of course), but at the end of the day, you have to admit it. Your team sucks this year.

But beyond the blow job of a team, this season teaches us something else about college football. It’s extremely unfair.

ESPN and other sources are reporting that ND’s former QB, Demetrius Jones, won’t be released from his scholarship to play for Northern Illinois. That means that if he wants to play, he has to pay the full tuition, which, if you’ve seen the price of college lately, is pretty impossible. If you haven’t been following the story, that might seem pretty fair to you – I mean, your team isn’t doing well so you leave…you should be punished. But that’s not the issue here. This situation is as hairy as Charlie Weis’ balls. I don’t imagine he shaves often.

The real issue here is that sophomore Jones was ousted from his QB position because golden boy freshman Jimmy Clausen returned after an injury. According to Jones, after practicing all summer with the team and being told that the position was his, he was told to go keep the bench warm so Clausen could step in and save the day.

Well, he hasn’t been saving the day. A QB is only as good as his offense.

The disgruntled Jones left for greener acres. Here was his choice: Turn the other cheek, stay at Notre Dame, and hope that Clausen gets injured so he gets a chance to play a few games OR take the criticism, transfer to another school, and actually have a chance at playing. And I mean, his opener against Georgia Tech was pretty grim, but he’s young so who knows. He could get drafted, if he gets some playing time. You never know.

Really, I think he made the right choice. ND needs to let him go…and they will eventually. They can only hold him back for this season, which Jones says he’ll spend practicing with the team, coming back next year to actually play.

So, the next time you find yourself in a moral dilemma, just ask yourself WWJD…What Would Jones Do?

WWJD?

Welcome to BCS Frenzy, I hope you’ll stick around and chat with me, even if you were terrible offended by my opening comment. There’s not much here at the moment, but add me to your RSS feed, and I promise to bring you the latest in NCAA news, as well as some wonderfully ingenious commentary on the most recent college football games. After all, what would you week be without reading about the latest Longhorn dumbass or the best on-field smackdown?

Plus, the more people who read what I have to say, the easier it will be to justify to my boyfriend watching 20 or so hours of football every weekend. Not that he minds. I mean, who doesn’t want a girlfriend that can hold an intelligent conversation about all the experts’ bowl predictions? Just for the record, I drink beer too. Yeah, that’s two for two.

In any case, I’m a big Penn State fan, as you’ve probably guessed, but here at BCS Frenzy, I’ll be covering all NCAA games, recruiting, off-season news, history, and so forth. I’ll be holding come contests, live blogging some games, and generally creating mayhem on the blog-o-sphere. And I hope you’ll join me. After all, I love a good comment now and again.

The other day, my boyfriend was watching the Eagles/Redskins game, and you know, I just couldn’t get into it. I live less than two hours from Philly, and I hate their fans with a passion, but that’s not what stopped me. In general, I just don’t like pro football as much as I like the college game. *shrug* So boyfriend wanted to know why…and I hadn’t really thought about it before, but here’s what I came up with:

• Professional sports are too commercial. If I see that Manning douchebag in one more commercial, I might puke.

• In college, there’s more team loyalty among the players. Sure, some pros play for the same team their entire careers. Many of them are really faithful. And yes, there are a few players that transfer schools. But in general, college players are more about pride. It has to do with the fact that this isn’t their job, it’s an activity. There’s still politics, of course, but it’s not as heavy as it is in the pros.

• People you know play college football. Ok, maybe not people you know, but it’s not a far stretch to imagine seeing a college football player on the streets or at the bar and talking about the game with him. Pros – even the “nobody” pros that never play – are all hidden away in their mansions with their trophy wives. *cough*ElisabethHasselbeck*cough*.

• College teams have bands. That may sound really dorky, but I don’t give a rat’s ass. I love the atmosphere the band adds to the game.

• The offense play is more diverse in college football. It’s exciting to me that one team can play so very different than the next, but they can both be really, really excellent. In pro, offenses don’t vary as much. In my opinion, that’s one of the biggest reasons that some schools traditionally don’t send as many players to the pros as others.

I’m sure I can think of more reasons as well if I tried, but honestly, that’s enough for me. I just don’t get that “thrill” watching a pro game as I do watching a college game.
