Tiger Woods Inches Closer to FedEx Cup

He’s halfway there.  Tiger Woods catapulted past Sean O’Hair to take a one stroke lead at the Tour Championship, putting himself in prime position to capture his second FedEx Cup, and the cool $10 million that goes along with it.  Woods had a chance to have an even bigger lead, but an uncharacteristically wonky putter led him to miss two short putts in succession.  Tiger had to fight to hold his temper after missing the pair of putts, but at the end of the round, he was able to see the bigger picture.  His 2-under 68 left him 5-under for …read more

O’Hair Grabs Lead at Tour Championship

Despite the Atlanta area’s recent deluge of rain, the East Lake Golf Club was in superb shape, especially the firm greens, which kept the day’s scores on the lower side.  When all was said and done, Sean O’Hair had taken the lead with a 4-under 66, one stroke ahead of Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Stewart Cink.  O’Hair had none other than Woods to thank for help getting to 4-under, as the world’s No.1 ranked player gave his friend some timely putting advice in a Wednesday practice round.  O’Hair put that advice to good use, draining a 55-footer during the …read more

Harrington Pulls a Fast One on Stewart Cink

Considering that the British Open is the first major tournament he’s won, Stewart Cink isn’t the greatest of caretakers for the event’s trophy, the famed Claret Jug.  Since winning the tourney two months ago, the trophy has resided in a most unusual place–his kitchen.  Specifically, Cink has displayed the Claret Jug on his home’s kitchen island, because, as he puts it, “it’s the place where it’s most seen.”
This week, as players prepare for the Tour Championship, Cink has brought the trophy along to be displayed at East Lake Golf Club’s famed clubhouse, as an act of goodwill.  The course offered …read more

Tiger Still in Control at PGA Championship

Seems like a few golfers on tour aren’t quite ready to hand over the Wanamaker Trophy to Tiger Woods just yet.  Entering the third round of play at the PGA Championship, Woods held a comfortable four stroke advantage over his nearest rivals.  But what a difference a day makes.  Tiger shot a rather pedestrian 1-under 71 for the round, and at one point was actually tied for the lead with the hard-charging Padraig Harrington, before righting the ship and regaining a two-stroke advantage, thanks in no small part to a poorly-timed Harrington bogey on the final hole.
With the wind being …read more

Once Again Field Chasing Tiger at Hazeltine

In the span of an hour, the PGA Championship went from the final major of the calendar year, into the Tiger Woods show.  No, this is not a repeat of 2002, 2004 or 2006.  At the turn today, three players were tied atop the leaderboard.  When all was said and done, only Tiger was left, holding a four stroke advantage over Ross Fisher, Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh and Brendan Jones.  Woods finished with a 2-under 70 to sit at 7-under heading into weekend play at Hazeltine.  Oh, by the way, Eldrick is 8-0 when leading a major through 36 holes.  …read more

Count Tiger In for the Olympics

Tiger Woods seemingly has it all.  Multiple green jackets to go along with three career Grand Slams, 70 career wins after this past weekend’s victory at the Bridgestone Invitational, a gorgeous wife, two adorable children, and more money than most of us would see in five lifetimes.
But one thing he doesn’t have is an Olympic gold medal.
That too may be in Tiger’s possession, providing he’s still golfing in 2016, at the ripe old age of 40.  The International Olympic Committee executive board convenes on Thursday to recommend the inclusion of two additional sports in the 2016 Olympic games.  Golf and …read more

Harrington Early Leader at Bridgestone

It only took Padraig Harrington eight months of swing tinkering, five straight missed cuts and life at the bottom of the leaderboard before the Ireland native was able to produce his best round of the year.  Finally putting it al together Thursday, Harrington’s opening round 6-under 64 placed him atop the leaderboard at the Bridgestone Invitational, two strokes ahead of Scott Verplank, Tim Clark and Prayad Marksaeng.  It is the first time all season Harrington has had a tournament lead.
Tiger Woods, the world’s top player, opened with a 2-under 68, four strokes back of Harrington as he tries to capture …read more

Woods Grouped With Ishikawa, Westwood

The media throng that normally follows Tiger Woods around at any major tournament is expected to grow by mammoth proportions after it was announced that Japanese phenom Ryo Ishikawa will play in Woods’ group for the first two rounds of the British Open.  Britain’s Lee Westwood, one of his homeland’s best players, rounds out the threesome.
Just 17 years old, Ishikawa won last month’s Mizuno Open to secure his spot at Turnberry.  He will have his usual gaggle of Japanese media following him to the Open, and it would not be surprising if the Japanese media turnout is equal to, or even …read more

Tiger Gets Familiar With Turnberry

With many of the PGA pros slogging their way through a 36 hole final day at the John Deere Classic, Tiger Woods, the pre-tournament favorite and No. 1 world ranked player, took some time Sunday to get familiar with an unfamiliar course.  Turnberry, the site of next week’s British Open, has hosted the championship three times, the last time being 1994.  It is believed that this is the first time in three years that Woods has shown up at a major tournament without ever seeing the course beforehand.  The last time was at Royal Liverpool in 2006, when Tiger captured …read more

Reigning Major Winners Paired at U.S. Open

For you golf fans hoping to see a Tiger Woods/Phil Mickelson pairing to start this year’s U.S. Open, you’re out of luck.  Tournament officials have decided against using last year’s method of grouping the top three players in world ranking, instead going with a grouping of the reigning major championship winners.  This means that instead of a Woods, Mickelson, Paul Casey group, Tiger will begin his U.S. Open defense paired with Masters winner Angel Cabrera, and Padraig Harrington, who captured the British Open and PGA Championship.
Mickelson’s grouping will not be without it’s share of intrigue though.  Phil will be teamed with Ernie …read more
