Congratulations to the Connecticut Huskies (22-1, 10-1) for hanging on to the number one ranking for a second week in a row in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls. An even bigger congrats if you achieved this feat without using steroids.

Looks like No. 2 Oklahoma (23-1, 9-0) may have to wait another week or two for its chance to claim the top spot. The Huskies play No. 23 Syracuse (18-6, 6-5) at home on Wednesday and visit Seton Hall (13-9, 4-6) on Saturday.

Oklahoma is stuck playing at Baylor (15-8, 3-6) on Wednesday and hosts Texas Tech (12-11, 2-6) and the comedy stylings of coach Pat Knight on Saturday.

Could No. 3 North Carolina possibly leap frog both teams and reclaim the top spot if one should lose and the Tar Heels (21-2, 7-2) win at No. 6 Duke (20-3, 7-2) on Wednesday and at Miami (FL) (15-8, 4-6) on Sunday?

The revolving door that is the bottom half of the AP top 25 has Florida State (18-5) at No. 25, Ohio State (17-5) checks in at No. 24 and Missouri (20-4) comes in at No. 17.

Texas, Minnesota and Washington were voted off the island.

And there is no sign of Notre Dame anywhere in the top 25.

But it makes you wonder if Pat Knight is slowly taking the Bob Knight route to silliness and unusual stunts to motivate his team.

LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech Red Raiders coach Pat Knight grew tired of watching his team miss shots that even a child could make. So he found one to illustrate his frustration.

While the Red Raiders (10-4) were busy botching about 15 layups against Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, Knight scoured the stands and invited a youngster to join the team huddle.

Knight asked the boy whether he could make layups. The boy said he could.

“I was just tired of having 18- or 21-year-olds miss layups that a 12-year-old could hit, so I brought a 12-year-old in to let them know that he could hit layups,” Knight said. “He’s 12 and he can hit layups, so why can’t you when you’re 18 to 21?”

The psychological maneuver evidentally worked. A layup by Mike Singletary with 8:44 remaining in the game put Texas Tech up 52-36, and Stephen F. Austin (7-4) couldn’t cobble together a comeback. The Red Raiders beat the Lumberjacks 69-55.

I find it hard to believe that Knight would simply walk away from the job mid-season unless something else was wrong. I hope it isn’t a health issue – Knight is 67 years old.

In any case, he has cemented his legacy as one of the top coaches in the history of college basketball, as well as one of the most controversial coaches.
