Advertising was the safety net that Google had when they launched their search engine. Initially they wanted to have their search engine technology licensed to the enterprise and at the back of their mind advertising would be a contingency plan. As it turned out, advertising became their primary option turning billions of dollars in revenues.

Desktop applications on the other hand were purchased through licenses and advertisements downloaded from the net through desktop applications were deemed security issues that security firms like Symantec blocked through their anti-spyware or anti-adware programs.

Steve Jobs is on the other side of the bed as he wants advertising to fill our operating system with ads and has filed a patent that embeds advertisement right on your desktop. Are we getting the operating system for free?

The patent attorneys were focused making sure every aspect and detail of the patent are well explained. One of the sections of the patent says the operating system can halt the operating of the system to make sure the user gets to focus on the advertisement. Again, are we getting paid when that happens? The patent goes even further by making sure they have not identified the personal computer only for the advertisement but it encompass every device that has an operating system which includes tablet PC, portable devices, pocket PCs, celfones, etc.

Microsoft is the largest software company in the world and its operating system is running on 1 billion of the 1.2 billion computers in the world. I wonder what the software giant is thinking about that patent. Should have they thought about that sooner? Or have they thought about it and felt it was plain stupid.

Microsoft is making lots of money through its licenses and I don’t think they would ever change that business model. Apple has been a revolutionary company and they may be able to pull this through especially when they offer to give out rebates or money back to the sale of the operating system whenever their OS has made money through advertising directly to the desktop.

Now this is interesting.

Microsoft is often caught in the unenviable position of playing catch-up to the sexier electronics releases of companies like Apple and Sony. But the company’s been making recent strides into overcoming that old stereotype. The Zune HD, which has been getting rave reviews. The long-awaited Surface multimedia table, which is mind-boggling in its capabilities. And the just-leaked Courier “booklet” (aka, 2-screened tablet), which packs a serious wow factor.

A new patent (see image below) has turned up online that could likewise find Microsoft suddenly in the driver’s seat on a leading new innovation. The patent depicts an insanely cool, split keyboard for touchscreen devices, in which you don’t have to bother ensuring that your fingers line up with the on-screen keys. Instead, the keys line up to your fingers.

The idea is so simple it’s a wonder no one’s tried it before. You just put your hands on the multitouch-sensitive screen, and it reads your positioning and inserts the keyboard right beneath your fingers. Wicked cool. And exactly the kind of tech that would come in handy for both Surface and Courier.

The patent application states that the contributor would upload self images for viewing and would then be rated by viewers that provides an opinion on various fashion or cosmetic looks.

“The contributor uploads self images for viewing and rating (or voting) by viewers who choose provide an opinion on different fashion and/or cosmetic looks of the contributor. The contributor takes images show the contributor presented with a number (e.g., two) of different fashion choices. The snapshots can then be processed for upload to a website or other accessible location by one or more viewers. The viewers can cast a vote for one of the images by selecting the desired image, in response to which the viewer and/or contributor will be presented with overall statistics for that set of images as to how other viewers voted, as well as a next set of photos depicting the user in a different fashion and/or cosmetic choice. This process can continue until terminated.”

Where is Microsoft going to use this patent? Maybe in their BING search engine that has all the eye candy they can put there.

Have you spotted places where they have used this already?
