You have 11 days to buy Christmas presents. And by “you”, I mean me.

“Plants vs. Zombies” for PC and Mac

Plants vs. Zombies comes out this week and I hadn’t heard of it before but I have to confess that the super cheesy (and moderately lame) trailer totally won me over. I am a sucker for clever marketing and the ridiculous and slightly insane video for the game was super effective – I’m actually going to play this crazy-sounding game and I NEVER play PC games. Besides, who can resist a game with a tagline like this: “get ready to soil your plants.”

The single player action-strategy game (available for both PC and Mac) pits brain-eating zombies against an arsenal of powerful perennials. There are five different play modes and players will have to use whatever is at their disposal (peashooters, mushrooms, cherry bombs and more vegetation) to turn 26 types of zombies (including pole-vaulters and Zomboni drivers) into mulch before they can get to the front door. You’ll also have to collect coins to buy a pet snail, power-ups and other items.

Players will have the choice to play in any of the following game modes: Adventure, Mini-Games, Puzzle, Survival and the Zen Garden (maybe it’s peaceful because it’s zombie-free?). While I tend to prefer mini-games, what I’ve read about the Adventure mode sounds pretty cool since the battles take place in different settings (swimming pool, rooftop) and can happen in the day, night and/or fog.

So after I posted my I Miss Gaming post yesterday, I was struck by the realization that it’s awfully hard for one person to know about all of the awesome games that are out there to play.

The games that maybe didn’t make the most money or maybe didn’t get the most press but still rock and are games that have a hardcore following.

See? THOSE are the games that I want to play.

I want to play the games that people play because they LOVE them and not because they think that they should be playing them and then they find themselves hating the game but they can’t quit playing it because what would people think of them?

Wait. Am I the only one who has done that?

Assassin’s Creed was like that for me.

I was SO FUCKING EXCITED by the things that were offered by that game. The graphics were awesome. The story was pretty solid. The gameplay was good…until you had assassinated like the second person and you realized that every single assassination was going to be just like the first assassination…and the second…and the third. After a while, I felt like I had to finish the game, even though I was so amazingly bored by the whole deal that I started having fantasies about folding laundry.

If I am having fantasies about folding laundry while I’m playing your game then you know that you have officially lost my interest.

So.

I come to you with a plea, of sorts.

What games are you playing? And not just what games are you playing, but what games do you LOVE? Gross, sloppy, tongue kissing in love with.

A couple of restrictions, since nothing with me can ever be easy:

Has to be a PC game
Has to be a PS3 game [though I have a 20GB PS3 so PS2 games are an option, as well]

I know that there are probably some dynamite games out there for 360 and the Wii but I have no interest in shelling out the dough to purchase those systems. Also, I’m fiercely loyal to Steve, my Ps3, and know that it would hurt his feelings if I cheated on him.

Let me have it, y’all. I can’t say that I’m gonna run right out and grab up everything that you suggest but I’ll definitely give them all a good, hard look.

Not like I have any ideas of my own right now.

Far Cry returns for a sequel

If you think the Far Cry “franchise” hasn’t been milked enough, guess again. GameSpot revealed that UbiSoft is set to come out with a sequel to the popular 2004 shooter. Since Crytek, the game’s original developer, has sold UbiSoft the rights to Far Cry, you can be sure that the Germany-based developer won’t be coming back to make the next installment.

As you may have heard, Crytek has paired with EA, the mortal enemy of UbiSoft, and is set to release Crysis, that DirectX 10 beast that’s set to rob you of your precious cash. Crysis has nothing to do with Far Cry.

However, since UbiSoft has the rights to use the CryENGINE (the game engine used in Far Cry), the sequel just might use it for the next Far Cry game. This might not be such a bad idea, considering that CryENGINE runs even better than Source. If this happens, expect the increase in Far Cry 2’s hardware requirements to be more forgiving that of Crysis. If it’s purdy and runs great, then it’s fantastic in my book.

Church of England blasts Sony for PS3 shooter

Once again, Sony has drawn anger over the PlayStation 3. This time, the group frothing at the mouth is the Church of England. The reason? Resistance: Fall of Man, the only good FPS to date that came out of Sony’s already-controversial console.

The Church of England is pissed at Sony for using the Manchester Cathedral as the setting of a mission in said shooter, and that Sony didn’t seek permission to use the cathedral in the game. The Church said it’s is considering legal action if Sony doesn’t say sorry, withdraw the game from store shelves, or modify the mission in question to remove the building’s interior.

Obviously, Sony has no plans of stopping the sales of Resistance, especially since the game has sold over a million copies.

Sony is also being criticized for using Manchester because the place has a gun crime problem. Way to go, Sony. Bill Gates hates you, gamers hate you, Tony Blair hates you, now Manchester and the entire Church of England hates you.

Even Mothers Against Violence, a Manchester-based organization, is joining the fray by seconding the Church’s action.

While each side’s arguments hold water, I just can’t help but question the Church’s motives for this one. If the game in question were Psychonauts, there probably won’t be a rush for legal battle.

As for the Church’s chances, it looks pretty slim. The U.K.’s Copyright Designs and Patents act says it’s not infringement to “represent artistic works that are on public display.” Alex Chapman of law firm Campbell Hooper told GamesIndustry.biz that this includes buildings and sculptures that are permanently situated in a public place or in premises open to the public.

That sounds exactly like the Manchester Cathedral to me.

On the other hand, the cathedral is certainly put into a bad light, and the situation doesn’t help the locale’s gun troubles. Here’s the rub: there aren’t any laws against corporate insensitivity. If there were, Sony would have burned at the stake for the PS3 prices.
