For the Phillies, it was a disappointing end to a game they appeared destined to win. Martinez gave up only two hits in his seven innings of work. Ryan Howard hit a solo shot in the fourth to put Philadelphia on top.

Dodgers catcher Russell Martin said that this game illustrated how Los Angeles typically wins games.

“We go out there and compete, play through 27 outs, and whatever happens, happens,” said Martin. “But we never keep our heads down.”

Game 3 will be played in Philadelphia on Sunday.

After winning Game 1 of their series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Philadelphia Phillies will send Pedro Martinez to the mound in Game 2. Martinez, who began his career with the Dodgers, will be pitching for the first time in the month of October.

In the regular season, the 37-year-old native of the Dominican Republic was 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA. After staying out of baseball for the beginning of the 2009 campaign, he eventually signed with the Phillies and pitched in nine games.

The Dodgers will be starting their own mid-season acquisition. After going 8-6 with a 4.92 ERA with the Texas Rangers, Vicente Padilla was released. The Dodgers signed him and he went 4-0 with a 3.20 in eight appearances — seven of which were starts.

In Game 2, the Dodgers basically face a must win situation. If they drop both home games, they’ll face the nearly impossible task. To even the series, they’ll have to face a familiar face.

Lincecum was hardly disappointing. In his seven innings of work, he gave up four hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out 11. His record on the season is now 13-5 and he sports a 2.34 ERA.

The Phillies got their runs via a Jayson Werth solo homer in the second inning and a Ryan Howard RBI double in the sixth inning. With the win, Philadelphia now leads the NL East by 8.5 games. The loss kept the Giants one game back in the NL Wild Card race.

Said Martinez: “It was really fun to actually get back to the game. Last year was a horrible year. It was a very tough year. I actually feel good and it shows.”

To give Martinez run support, the Phillies used the long ball. Ryan Howard hit a homer in the first inning. Shane Victorino added a two-run homer in the third inning, while Jimmy Rollins had a three-run homer in the fourth inning.

With the win, Philadelphia moved 4.5 games ahead of the Florida Marlins and the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. The loss pushed the Cubs 4 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central.

After sitting out the beginning of the season, Martinez recently signed with the Phillies for a deal worth around $1 million. The potential future Hall of Famer is trying to regain the magic that he has seemingly lost.

Last year for the New York Mets, Martinez was 5-6 with a 5.62 ERA. If he is going to help the Phillies to win back-to-back World Series titles, he is going to have to pitch better than that.

Wednesday night was a start.

Martinez supposedly wants a $5 million prorated for the amount of the season that remains. While the Phillies might bulk at guaranteeing all that money, they may give him a contract full of incentives that could end up lucrative if Martinez plays well.

The 37-year-old Martinez has a possible Hall of Fame resume, however he struggled last year with the New York Mets. In 20 starts, he registered a 5.62 ERA and finished with a record of 5-6.

By signing Martinez, the Phillies would hope that he could provide the pitching depth needed to make a run at back-to-back World Series championships.

It makes sense for the Phillies to sign Martinez around the All-Star break if both teams can agree financially.

Not only is it not extremely encouraging to see a potential employee partying on a boat, add in liquor and women of questionable character and you have a uneasy mix. Add to that the fact that Martinez apparently has the muscle structure of an 11-year-old emo and that doesn’t exactly help his case.

Right now, he’s trying to help the Dominican Republic win the 2009 World Baseball Classic. For his sake, hopefully scouts pay attention more to that than his boat party antics.

Manny Ramirez
After all the drama that went on in Boston last year, who wouldn’t pay money to see Ramirez back with the Red Sox.

Pedro Martinez
Since the Montreal Expos are dead, Martinez should sign with their remains … also known as the Washington Nations.

Sammy Sosa
Watching the Cubs just isn’t as fun without Sosa. Without roids he probably weighs about 125 these days but at least we’d get to see that famous home run celebrations at least a couple of times.

Joe Torre
After Torre’s book that is supposedly trashing the Yankees, it’d be awesome to see him back in New York. Hey, if Phil Jackson can write a book and then return, why not Torre?

Mark McGwire
McGwire and steroids should have a reunion. Watching him chase the home run record while juiced up was amazingly fun.

Alex Rodriguez
Whatever happened to Alex Rodriguez and Madonna. Supposedly there is an Alex Rodriguez and Madonna sex tape. That relationship was headed in the right direction.
