The Hall of Fame coach passed away today at the age of 93 at the home of one of his former players and caretaker for the past few years, Dr. Earl Shultz in Del Mar in San Diego County.
Newell won a national championship at California in 1959 and an Olympic gold medal in 1960 with a team that featured hall of famers Jerry Lucas, Jerry West and Oscar Robinson. That same year he was named Coach of the Year after leadinng Cal to the finals for the second straight season.

Tallest player in the nation has part of his foot amputated

The 2008-09 season hasn’t even started yet and we already have a player out with a terrible malady.
According to the Asheville Citizen Times, Kenny George, the 7-foot-7 inch senior center from North Carolina Asheville had part of his right foot amputated due to a life-threatening antibiotic-resistant staph infection.
It was reported this summer by the school that George, the tallest player in the nation would sit out this semester because of a foot infection.
