Gary Nicklaus Tries Hand at Comeback

It’s difficult living in your father’s shadow, especially when that shadow is cast by golf legend Jack Nicklaus.  But Gary Nicklaus, the third of Jack’s four sons, who never came close to matching his famous father’s success on the links despite carrying the Nicklaus name, is attempting a comeback on the PGA Tour.  But to do so, the younger Nicklaus has to do it the hard way, by going back to qualifying school.  The former PGA card-carrying member, who has 100 pro tournaments under his belt, hasn’t played on tour in six years.  But the draw of the game was …read more

Stricker Sets Record at Colonial

Steve Stricker shot his second straight 63 on Friday. His 14-under 126 total set a new record for 36 holes, as well as for any consecutive rounds at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial Country Club.
Even with his record setting pace, it was just enough to keep him atop the leaderboard. Three golfers – Tim Clark, Sean O’Hair and Vijay Singh – shot 64 on Friday. Clark is currently -13, one stroke off the lead with Singh (-12) and O’Hair (-11) following. The conditions were ideal on Friday with soft greens and a light wind.

Daly to Return to PGA Tour in Memphis

Two-time major champion John Daly plans to return to the PGA Tour in three weeks for the St. Jude Championship and U.S. Open qualifying. Daly was suspended from the PGA Tour for six months back in November following a series of negative incidents.
During his time off from the Tour, he hasn’t been out of golf altogether. He has played in eight tournaments overseas and tied for second place in the Italian Open. Daly didn’t feel that he deserved to be suspended, but he’s sure to be glad to be reinstated.
“He’s been working on his game, working on trying to get …read more

Phil Mickelson Suspends Tour

Phil Mickelson’s wife Amy has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and to help give her support and love, he has suspended his PGA tour indefinitely. Apparently she will begin treatment immediately, including a major surgery in the next two weeks.

Mickelson is currently the number two ranked golfer in the world. He withdrew from the “H.P. Byron Nelson Championship in Dallas, where he was scheduled to begin a two-week run, including a title defense at next week’s Crowne Plaza Colonial.” Our wishes for recovery and good health go out to Amy.

SBS International to Host PGA Opener

These economic times have been challenging for everyone, including the PGA Tour. The longtime title sponsor of the PGA Tour opener at Kapalua on the Hawaiian Island of Maui, Mercedes Benz, ended their 10-year relationship with the Tour earlier this year and the Tour was scrambling to find a replacement.

No longer. South Korea-based SBS International has signed a ten-year agreement with the PGA Tour to sponsor the Kapalua event. In addition, Seoul Broadcasting System also extended by seven years its exclusive agreement to show PGA Tour events in Korea.
All of the Tour news is not cheery, however. The tour has …read more
