David Duval to Lose PGA Tour Card

Oh how the mighty have fallen–although with David Duval it wasn’t so much a sickening thud, as a steady decline into failure.  Now Duval has to face the ignominy of losing his PGA Tour card, eight years after winning his only major, the British Open.  The top 125 golfers on the money list receive full tour status for the following year, but after missing the cut at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic, Duval is projected to finish at No. 131 on the money list.
But it’s not all bad for the former No. 1 player in the world.  Because he is …read more

PGA Tour Suspends Doug Barron for PED’s

Doug Barron became the first PGA player ever suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs, violating the tour’s policy on PED’s that came in to effect July 1, 2008.  If you’re wondering who the heck Doug Barron is, you’re not alone.  He’s only played on the developmental Nationwide Tour four times  this year, and the PGA tour but once, where he failed to make the cut.  Obviously the PED’s weren’t helping much.
It’s unknown, at this time, what exactly Barron was busted for taking, or why.  A few PGA pros came to Barron’s defense, saying the the golfer has suffered from multiple health …read more

Golfer Violates “No Tweeting” Rule

For as great a service Twitter provides, it seems that athletes get in trouble the easiest on the social networking site.  Case in point–PGA pro Parker McLachlin.  But his Twitter misstep isn’t quite so bad as some other, higher-profile athletes.  The PGA tour has a rule regarding the use of electronic devices during competition.  Basically the rule is, don’t use them–a simple rule that McLachlin forgot about during the final round of the Frys.com Open this past weekend.
The third-year pro was informed of his infraction by the PGA, after tweeting during a longer than usual wait on the back nine.

Tiger Woods Wins PGA Player of the Year

Guess which golfer won the points-based PGA of America player of the year award.  If you didn’t say Tiger Woods, well then, shame on you, because you’re wrong.  Woods won the award going away, thanks to his six PGA tour victories worth 10 points each, lowest adjusted scoring average, worth 20 points, and his finish atop the PGA Tour money list, which was also worth 20 points.  This marks the tenth time Tiger has taken home the hardware.
And that’s not all.  Woods is also taking home the Vardon Trophy from the PGA of America and the Byron Nelson Award from …read more

Daly to Star in New Reality Show

In his latest attempt at cleaning up his image, popular golfer John Daly, known more for his off-the-course antics than his actual golf game, is set to star in an upcoming reality series on the Golf Channel.  Daly was previously showcased in a 13-part series shown on the same channel, aptly titled “The Daly Planet.”  This current venture into reality television is set to focus on Daly’s new and improved “clean” lifestyle, as camera crews will follow him during his day to day life.
Much of Daly’s popularity is linked to his hard-drinking, fast-living, everyman quality.  He’s been married thrice, been …read more

PGA Tour Testing Reveals No PED Use

I can’t say that this announcement really surprised me, but it seems that after a year of testing for performance enhancing substances of players on the PGA tour, no player tested positive.  Not a one.  The announcement was made Wednesday by PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem.  Besides testing for anabolic steroids and human growth hormone, the tour also tested players for so-called recreational drugs, however, these results would not have been made public.  According to Finchem, positive results for recreational drugs among tour players would fall under “conduct unbecoming,” and the individual would be dealt with accordingly.
Tour officials were initially …read more

Goydos Surges Past Perry at River Highlands

The final round of the Travelers Championship is shaping up to be a dogfight after a number of players held the lead during Saturday’s third round.  Eventually Paul Goydos ended up atop the leaderboard, thanks to five birdies on the back nine, leaving him at 16-under for the tournament.  Kenny Perry, the leader after the first two rounds, sits one stroke back at 15-under.

Perry birdied the 12th and 13th to increase his lead to three strokes, but faltered at 14 to give a stroke back.  This opened the door for Goydos, who began his run of four straight birdies on …read more

Perry Hangs on to Lead at Travelers

Kenny Perry shot a 68 today at the Travelers Championship at the TPC River Highlands to follow his scorching 61 in the first round to sit at 11-under for the tournament.  Perry holds a two stroke lead over Ryan Moore, who took advantage of rain-softened greens to post a 65 for the day.  A group of six players, including David Toms and Anthony Kim, sit three strokes back of Perry.

Rain came down on and off throughout the morning, but the sun made an appearance in the afternoon.  The good weather was short-lived however, as thunderstorms rolled in around 4:30 p.m.  …read more

No Rest for Glover After Winning U.S. Open

You would think after winning a tournament as prestigious as the U.S. Open that Lucas Glover might get a little time off to savour his victory.  Especially since the tourney extended into Monday, and Glover’s Tuesday was spent accompanying his Open trophy to the top of the Empire State Building after hanging with Regis and doing the Top 10 List on Letterman.
But Glover had committed to playing in this week’s tour stop, the Travelers Championship at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.  And he did just that, playing in the tournament’s pro-am on Wednesday, before teeing it up on Thursday.
“I …read more

Golfer Smith in Shock After Wife’s Death

PGA pro Chris Smith and his family are in shock as they try to pick up the pieces following a horrific car accident on Father’s Day which claimed the life of Smith’s wife Beth and critically injured the couple’s two children, 16 year old Abigail and 12 year old Cameron.
According to authorities, Smith’s daughter Abigail was driving her mother and brother in an SUV when she apparently lost control and veered into the path of a Greyhound bus carrying the London (Ontario) Silverbacks football team.  The accident, which took place in Northern Indiana, injured more than 20 people, including Smith’s …read more
