Adam Kalsey, a founder and former CTO of RSS vendor Pheedo, has released a new service called FeedCrier. This service makes it easy to receive IM-notifications of new items in an RSS feed, just like the Rasasa-service where I wrote about before.
FeedCrier currently supports only AIM but that will change soon. Free accounts are limited, premium subscribers ($4 per month) can monitor an unlimited number of feeds, remove ads in the alerts, use a web interface to manage their alerts (via techcrunch).
Competitors include immedi.at and Zaptxt.

Consumers Remaining Within Aggregator / News Reader Environment To View RSS Content

Summary Feed CTR Varies Widely

Most Publishers Opt for Summary Feeds

Content Category Influences RSS Ad Performance; Niche Categories Yielding High Response Rates

And the Executive Summary:

As the RSS publishing and advertising marketplace evolves, it is important to monitor the indicators such as click-through rates, which are normalizing; RSS ad performance, which remains strong; and most importantly, how RSS consumers are interacting with feed content.

Advertisers and publishers need to engage the RSS consumer at the aggregator or feed reader level. That’s where the relationship is — not at the website. Hoping for a click-through by publishing summary feed content is not a viable content monetization strategy in an RSS-enabled publishing model. This is good news for publishers who are evaluating opportunities for RSS feed advertising, and good news for advertisers seeking to reach information consumers in this growing channel.

Stuart Watson, CTO and founder, explains “We can now deliver ads within RSS readers regardless of which article an individual subscriber is viewing and which reader he or she is using. Currently, subscribers use different readers, making it difficult to get ads delivered. We can auto-format an ad based on the reader type as well as deliver ads to an article opened by an RSS subscriber.” The solution will be more broadly deployed in the coming weeks… Meanwhile FeedBurner has designed a self-service interface to make the ad-buying process easier for advertisers. The new self-service tools provide a quick way to bypass human contact and purchase media directly via the FeedBurner website. And last but not least, Pheedo is about to announce the launch of “Ads for Feeds”. This is a new service that will make it easy for website publishers to insert and track the ads into their feeds. This should be Pheedo’s big push to grab the publsher market in the emerging RSS advertising space, according to president Bill Flitter.

Well, looks like there is gonna be enough choice for publishers who wanna monetize their content. I’m very curious how this will evolve… Are we gonna get rss-ad-killers?

Size and relevancy are very important, so don’t create ads that oversize the content…

A few weeks ago I read a post about FeedSky (Chinese Feedburner), this company enables users to add advertising of Joyo in their feeds, and get revenue sharing when ads are clicked by readers. It is the first attempt in China to monetize RSS feeds.

You also wanna monetize your RSS feed? There are a few companies that provide RSS ads, these are the ones I know:

The Yahoo Publisher Network has added support for ads in RSS feeds. If you are a YPN beta user, you can include ads within your full post RSS feed;

The FeedBurner Ad Network (FAN) gives you the opportunity to monetize content. Feedburner also lets you insert an Amazon Associate ID in your feeds;

Pheedo offers RSS ads that appear on your weblog and in your feeds;

Google AdSense for feeds beta (apply);

Kanoodle delivers advertising in RSS (sponsored links);

Q-Ads (AKA Adgenta) offers a unique way for you to embed ads anywhere you can place a picture – in your blog post, on your website and in your RSS feed.

Did I miss anyone? Please let me know…
And what happened to hot start-up rssads.com?

Anyway, a new study from PQMedia expects RSS advertising to gain popularlity quickly. RSS advertising, non-existent until mid-2005, generated spending of $650,000 in 2005, but will be the fastest growing segment over the next five years!
