Can it be true? It turns out that the PlayStation 2 has now reached an incredible milestone, selling an astounding 50 million units in North America. Too bad there are no new big titles on the horizon, as Persona 4 was probably the last big game for the console. Here are today’s headlines:

• It turns out that not only is Loco Roco 2 coming soon, it’s going to be cheap, as the game will retail for just $19.99.
• PiexlJunk Eden will getting a patch soon that will fix some of the problems that players have been having with the PSN title. But even better, an “Encore” edition of the game will be released at some point, which should include all kinds of new goodies.
• Good news for Sackboy fans, as the LittleBigPlanet star can now be yours with a little bit of work. And by work I mean knitting.
• Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is finally coming to the PS3, and to make up for the delay, it will be an Ultimate Edition of the real time strategy game.

Today in PlayStation: January 14, 2008

It’s Thursday, and you know what that means: another PSN update. This week we have some new games, a new Qore episode, and even a new addition to Home. There should also be a few interesting tidbits coming out CES this year, so stay tuned.

• Home is getting a new area this week, with Red Bull Island. In addition to a whole bunch of advertising, the new area will give users the chance to explore the tropical island in planes and helicopters.
• The next episode of Qore is on its way, and with it comes an exclusive F.E.A.R 2 demo.
• Sony has been showing off some very cool 3D PS3 technology at CES, unfortunately it’s only a demo for now.
• Speaking of CES, head over here to take a quick tour of Sony’s impressive booth for the event.
• Asian gamers are getting two new, very bright colors for the PSP.
• PSN favorite PixelJunk Eden has been nominated for a number of Independent Games Festival awards, including best visuals and audio

Today in PlayStation: January 8, 2008

We’re back! After what feels like a lengthy holiday break, the PSM is back in business, ready to give you everything you need to know about the world of PlayStation. Hopefully everyone’s break was full of fun and games, as mine was spent split between eating lots of turkey, playing lots of Fallout 3 and Persona 4, and catching up on season 4 of Lost. Here’s the first batch of headlines for 2009:

• if you loved PixelJunk Racers, Monsters, or Eden, get ready, as Q-Games is preparing “2 or 3″ new PJ games for 2009.
• In more Killzone 2 pre-order news, those who pre-purchase the game at GameStop will get a demo of the game, while Best Buy is offering an exclusive PS3 theme.
• Meanwhile, anyone who pre-orders the PSP title Resistance: Retribution at Amazon will get an exclusive demo.
• A demo for Lord of the Rings: Conquest is now available on the PlayStation Network.
• It turns out that a number of companies, Microsoft included, are using Home as a place to hold virtual meetings.

Today in PlayStation: January 2, 2009

Though it may appear to be a simple platformer at first, LittleBigPlanet is so much more. The game provides a wealth of level creation tools and a YouTube-style level sharing system, giving players an almost endless supply of levels. Add in an absolutely adorable art style and terrrificly whimsical soundtrack, and you have the best PS3 experience of 2008.

Runner-Up –  Burnout Paradise

Best PS2 Game - Persona 4

The PlayStation 2 may be on its last legs, but that didn’t prevent Atlus from using it craft the best role-playing experience of the year. The game builds upon its predecessor, offering an improved battle system and a much more in-depth story line. It’s dark, it’s weird, and it’s a truly great title that should not be missed.

Runner-Up – Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain of Memories

Best PSN Game – Pixeljunk Eden

2008 was the year when the PlayStation Network finally came into its own, offering a wealth of great games. Leading the way was Pixeljunk Eden, a stylish platformer that exemplifies what a great downloadable game should be: it’s perfect for quick bouts of gaming, but is substantial enough to keep you interested for hours.

Runner-Up – WipEout HD

Best PSP Game – Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Square-Enix hasn’t had much luck when it comes to building on the Final Fantasy VII mythos, but they finally struck gold with this PSP prequel. Crisis Core does a great job of adding to the backstory of FFVII, fleshing out characters like Zack, who were only briefly mentioned in the original. The game also has a unique and addictive battle system, along with arguably the best production values yet on Sony’s handheld.

PlayStation Monger Game of the Year Awards

It’s Monday, and it’s almost time to take some time off for the holidays. But in the mean time, there is plenty of interesting gaming news today, especially if for fans of PSN games.

• The Spike Video Game Awards were this weekend, and Media Molecule won studio of the year and PS3 game of the year for LittleBigPlanet.
• Also at the VGAs, God of War III and Uncharted 2 both debuted brand new trailers.
• It looks like Space Invaders Extreme is coming to the PlayStation Network, though we don’t know when.
• Pixeljunk Eden is getting a patch, which will make the downloadable title a tad less frustrating.
• We finally have details on the next game from the creator of Katamari, Noby Noby Boy. It will be available exclusively on the PSN, and will cost around $9. Additionally, it should be released early next year.

Today is chock full of PlayStation news, so be sure to check out the following links to find out what’s new with the PS3 and PSP. And be sure to check out the latest PSN content, which is full of all kinds of great games and deals. If you haven’t played Pixeljunk Eden yet, this is the week to do so.

• We all know that the PS3 can do more then play games, but apparently it’s also one of the best Bul-Ray players on the market. At least, according to CNN.
• Unlike a number of PS3 titles, the upcoming Killzone 2 won’t require a hard drive install. In fact, it’s not even an option.
• We don’t know when, but it looks like a demo for Resident Evil 5 will be hitting the PlayStation Network sometime before the game is released in North America.
• In honor of the American Thanksgiving, this weeks LittleBigPlanet free DLC is none other then a turkey hat. But if you have some money to burn, you can also pick up a Resistance 2 Chimera costume.
• The PSN is also having an awesome sale, with 5 great games available for just $4.99 each: The Last Guy, Pixeljunk Eden, Echochrome, Commando 3, and Novastrike.
• It looks like the previously believed Wii-exclusive title Tenchu 4 will now be coming to the PSP as well.
• Sony has released a trailer for the PSP version of Everyday Shooter, and it looks pretty much exactly the same as the PS3 game. Which, of course, is a good thing.
• We also have prices for a couple of upcoming PS3 peripherals. The Wireless keypad will run gamers $49.99, meanwhile an AC adaptor for charging controllers and headsets will cost $24.99.
• And, in case you were wondering, Ubisoft is indeed hard at work on the sequel to Assassin’s Creed.

5. WipEout HD

Racing games are great when you only have a short amount of time to play. You can squeeze in a race or two in no time, especially in a game as fast as WipEout HD. The only problem is that one race can quickly lead to five, which then leads to you forgetting to pick up the kids from school. Woops!

4. Mega Man 9

Old-school gaming is great, because the game mechanics are easy to grasp, but hard to master. And though Mega Man 9 is a brand new title, it brings that same old school mentality–not to mention delightfully pixelated 8-bit graphics. The best part about playing MM9 with limited time is that you can get a lot out of only a few minutes of play. In 10 minutes time you can die upwards of 14 times.

3. flOw

If you aren’t in the mood to get frustrated dying a few dozen times, you may want to try a more relaxing experience. Enter flOw. This aquatic life simulator combines soothing tones and subdued visuals for what amounts to a truly unique experience. It’s not so great for long sessions, but in short bursts can be perfect for a gamer plowing through all of  AAA holiday releases.

2. PixelJunk Eden

 A step up from flOw challenge wise, Eden is still a very chilled out experience, only with a little more game behind it. You collect pollen in order to open up new areas, which are accessed by swinging and jumping off of plants. The game also features a beautiful abstract aesthetic that is perfect from getting away from the photorealistic look of most modern games.

1. Everyday Shooter

There’s nothing like a twin-stick shooter to freshen you up before moving onto the next big, time-consuming game. Unfortunately, most of them can be frustratingly hard. What’s great about Everyday Shooter is that it is very accessible, so that you don’t have to spend lots of time memorizing enemy patterns or learning how to use multiple weapons. It’s just a straight up shooter, that happens to sport some of the most unique graphics on the PS3, not to mention one kick-ass soundtrack.
