Mobile vs. Portable – Does Size Matter to Everyone: Part I
July 26, 2009 by Jason Bean

Let me just jump right out and say it. When it comes to most computer related technology devices, size doesn’t really matter to me. I think smaller is cool and impressive with just how much they can fit into a small package, but I don’t have to continually change devices to keep getting smaller.
One of the things that I’m regularly experiencing is that I get teased about the size of my phone. I have been using a PPC-6700 with Sprint for the last three years or so now. I have credit to get a new phone and have no real …read more
Temporarily Change Cellphone Ringers

I’ve discovered yet another feature that doesn’t exist (that I’m aware of) on my cellphone or anyone elses. Normally when I’m onsite with a client I’ll turn my cellphone ringer to completely silent. I don’t want it on vibrate either, that’s just annoying. I usually have the phone sitting right in front of me and notice it when the screen lights up, I then pick-up the phone and answer it.
What I’d like to be able to do is to have a secondary ringer that I can specify in certain situations. I know I can set specific ringers for different people …read more
Need More Windows Mobile Games

I confess, I’m addicted to Bubble Breaker on my Windows Mobile phone. The problem is I’m actually getting bored with it. I need to find a good game or two to add to my device to break-up the monotony a little bit.
Solitaire is old as well, so wondering what everyone else is playing? I’m not really interested in any in-depth, drawn out games. Just simple stuff to play when you’re waiting in the car for someone or have a few minutes to kill between appointments.
I play Bubble Breaker as a bit of a de-stresser and opportunity to …read more
Is HTC Dropping Windows Mobile?

Smartphone developer, HTC, has been talking about their upcoming new device that is "better and more functional" than the iPhone and Palm Pre.
“We have seen both and we believe that the new HTC phone will be a real competitor to the iPhone and the Pre which at this stage looks nice but is still not delivered to market”.
I’ve been using my PPC-6700 which is manufactured by HTC and have been happy with it for almost 4 years now. Having a new phone would be nice, but it’s not worth the price for me to really upgrade it at this point. …read more
Windows Live Writer Update Thoughts

I wrote about updating my installation of Windows Live Writer to the newest tech preview and now it’s time to share some thoughts and images.
Let’s work through the image above to see some updates and improvements:
Quick Color Formatting: Not sure if this is new or not but didn’t remember it in the old version. Basically it’s just a quick way to change your preferred interface color.
Change Blog: A drop-down list of all your blogs setup in the system to allow you to choose the one you need to post to quickly.
View Tabs: A quick way to change between …read more
Access Pocket PC (PPC-6700) From Laptop

One of the things that I cannot believe doesn’t exist yet, or at least I haven’t found it, is the ability to completely control my PPC-6700 (or any smart phone for that matter) from my laptop’s keyboard and mouse.
If I’m docked in my USB cradle and the cradle is attached to my laptop, why in the world can’t I pop open an application window that mirrors that “desktop” of my phone and work with the phone in that mode?
Here’s a couple of the things that I’d think I should be able to do without any problems:

Outlook Contact Photos

Since I’ve been playing with Xobni more one question I’ve come across is why doesn’t Xobni use Outlook’s own contact photo information?
That was somewhat of a rhetorical question because I didn’t really need an answer and it wasn’t worth completely pursuing for an answer.
What it did do though was make me wonder where Outlook keeps it’s contact photo information? I’m curious because I love that my phone displays the contact photo on CallerID when that person calls me. It makes it really easy to see who’s calling you with a quick glance at your phone if you’re in a …read more
Vista w/ ActiveSync

Thanks to Mark, I’m now downloading Vista RC1. However, I’ve also been reading that ActiveSync isn’t working with Vista and I’m using ActiveSync 4.2 with my PPC-6700 Pocket PC phone.
Is anyone using ActiveSync and running the Vista beta or RC1? Did you have problems? Is it working? What’s been your experience.
Building a Better Browser (for Pocket PC)

I’m really enjoying having the web on my PPC-6700. I’ve discovered that Gmail and Bloglines works great with the device.
The reason they work so great? Because both sites recognize I’m connecting with a mobile device and adjust their display to work with the smaller screen size and functionality of the device itself.
I’d still like to be able to browse to some other sites though without any problems. Yahoo! Mail for example doesn’t work at all on the browser. The new version of Yahoo! Mail doesn’t work on all existing desktop browser versions either. It’s recognizing the PPC browser as IE4. …read more
ActiveSync 4.2

Microsoft has released a new version of ActiveSync. This one is 4.2 and should take care of many of the problems with the 85010014 errors many of us have been dealing with.
I’m currently looking at my ActiveSync 4.2.0 (Build 4855) BETA install for my PPC-6700. Looks like this is the final, non-beta version.
Thanks to Pocket PC Addict for the heads up on this. Also for this custom auto-complete dictionary tool. If you haven’t visited Pocket PC Addict, it’s a great little site and I encourage you to ride on some of their bandwidth and check them out.
