One of the things that I’m regularly experiencing is that I get teased about the size of my phone. I have been using a PPC-6700 with Sprint for the last three years or so now. I have credit to get a new phone and have no real desire to change devices.

My wife has a Palm Centro and she’s the one that regularly teases me about my phone. I decided to find out what’s the real difference between phones. Below is a comparison of a couple of phones that I found on the PhoneScoop website and reviewed on EveryJoe.

The challenge I get is that my phone “looks” larger than it is because it’s a square block. Unlike the other devices above which have tapered edges that make them appear smaller. The trade-off in my mind is that I have a huge screen and full-slide-out keyboard. The only real difference in size of all these phones is the weight, and the difference is about 2 oz. Sorry folks, but that’s not going to strain my back.

I’ll take the two ounces in exchange for the features I have that my wife doesn’t and the size of screen I have to use with the full keyboard. The size doesn’t really matter to me.

Smartphone developer, HTC, has been talking about their upcoming new device that is "better and more functional" than the iPhone and Palm Pre.

“We have seen both and we believe that the new HTC phone will be a real competitor to the iPhone and the Pre which at this stage looks nice but is still not delivered to market”.

I’ve been using my PPC-6700 which is manufactured by HTC and have been happy with it for almost 4 years now. Having a new phone would be nice, but it’s not worth the price for me to really upgrade it at this point. It still does pretty much everything I need a phone to do.

The iPhone is a nice device from what my friends say that have one, but I’m curious how much of its popularity is just because it’s an iPhone from Apple and it’s "cool" to pull one out of your purse or pocket and have everyone see you.

The key for me in any phone is functionality, reliability and ease of use.

My only real complaint about my PPC-6700 is the volume limit for both the receiver and ringer.

I bought my wife a new Palm Centro for a Christmas gift this year and she’s been happy with it. It’s taken a bit of an adjustment for me to re-familiarize myself with the Palm OS though, so having the Windows Mobile OS for me has been great.

The no-brainer synching between my phone and everything in Outlook has been perfect.

Change Blog: A drop-down list of all your blogs setup in the system to allow you to choose the one you need to post to quickly.

View Tabs: A quick way to change between the different views available for editing: Edit (my preferred), Preview, Source (Pure HTML editing).

No very many huge or significant improvements, but enough to make it worthwhile. What I’m looking for now though is a mobile version that I can use on my PPC-6700 Pocket PC phone on my Sprint network.

If I’m docked in my USB cradle and the cradle is attached to my laptop, why in the world can’t I pop open an application window that mirrors that “desktop” of my phone and work with the phone in that mode?

Here’s a couple of the things that I’d think I should be able to do without any problems:

Send a text message via my phone. I know I can do it through Outlook Connector, but it’s not the same and the recipient can’t just “Reply” to my text and get it back to me.

Dial the phone. If I’ve got headphones with a mic plugged in, it would be great to be able to use my cell phone and make a phone call to someone through my computer. I’d think the Mobile OS would just need to pump the audio through the USB to the audio headphone and mic outputs of the laptop.

Install software. Why can’t I completely work through the install process through my laptop keyboard and mouse?

Really the list could go on, but I should be able to completely control my phone through my laptop or desktop, whatever computer it’s plugged into. It doesn’t seem like it should be that hard.

The stretch would be to achieve the vice-versa task of completely controlling my laptop through my phone.

Since I’ve been playing with Xobni more one question I’ve come across is why doesn’t Xobni use Outlook’s own contact photo information?
That was somewhat of a rhetorical question because I didn’t really need an answer and it wasn’t worth completely pursuing for an answer.
What it did do though was make me wonder where Outlook keeps it’s contact photo information? I’m curious because I love that my phone displays the contact photo on CallerID when that person calls me.

It makes it really easy to see who’s calling you with a quick glance at your phone if you’re in a meeting or something.

For working with the photos themselves I put them in “My Pictures” but I don’t necessarily want to keep all of those sitting in there. Can I delete them? Should I bury them somewhere in the file system and just remember where they are?

I couldn’t find any information about the location of this stored information on the Internet. Anybody know? Oddly enough the other information I couldn’t find in the help section is the default minimum maximum size of the image for processing.

It’s a series of questions now though, because then I started wondering what it would take (or why it didn’t already) for the .vcf card attachments to include a photo of the contact person. What would be even cooler is if there was an option for you to include people’s avatars from things like twitter.

Thanks to Mark, I’m now downloading Vista RC1. However, I’ve also been reading that ActiveSync isn’t working with Vista and I’m using ActiveSync 4.2 with my PPC-6700 Pocket PC phone.
Is anyone using ActiveSync and running the Vista beta or RC1? Did you have problems? Is it working? What’s been your experience.

I’m really enjoying having the web on my PPC-6700. I’ve discovered that Gmail and Bloglines works great with the device.
The reason they work so great? Because both sites recognize I’m connecting with a mobile device and adjust their display to work with the smaller screen size and functionality of the device itself.
I’d still like to be able to browse to some other sites though without any problems. Yahoo! Mail for example doesn’t work at all on the browser. The new version of Yahoo! Mail doesn’t work on all existing desktop browser versions either. It’s recognizing the PPC browser as IE4. [...]
Post from: EveryJoe

What’s everyone else using for your mobile browser? I’ve heard Opera may work. Does anyone have any feedback for me?

Yikes! It’s 2:12am and I do have a “day” job to get to. Let me know though. I’ll be back!

Microsoft has released a new version of ActiveSync. This one is 4.2 and should take care of many of the problems with the 85010014 errors many of us have been dealing with.
I’m currently looking at my ActiveSync 4.2.0 (Build 4855) BETA install for my PPC-6700. Looks like this is the final, non-beta version.
Thanks to Pocket PC Addict for the heads up on this. Also for this custom auto-complete dictionary tool. If you haven’t visited Pocket PC Addict, it’s a great little site and I encourage you to ride on some of their bandwidth and check them out.
