Allenby Apologizes to Kim Over Remarks

Seems like Robert Allenby is feeling a little remorseful.  After calling out Anthony Kim for doing what many 24-year-olds do, the Australian has said he has personally apologized to Kim for the comments he made.  To refresh your memory, Allenby called Kim the “current John Daly” and the U.S. Presidents Cup team’s “loosest cannon.”  He also claimed that Kim had been out partying until 4 a.m. the night before their singles match, and that Kim had come back to the U.S. team’s hotel walking “sideways.”  Not that it mattered, Kim soundly defeated Allenby in their singles match.

Robert Allenby Calls Out Anthony Kim

Talk about your sour grapes.  Australia’s Robert Allenby, playing for the Presidents Cup International team, called out American Anthony Kim after the 24-year-old shortly after Kim had bested Allenby in singles play.  Allenby made reference to an unconfirmed report that Kim had been out until 4 a.m. on Saturday night, and that he had returned to the hotel “sideways.”  Allenby then went on to call Kim “the current John Daly,” and the “loosest cannon” on the U.S. team.
Kim, of course, denied the report, and hoped that Allenby was joking.
“I’m actually pretty surprised that he said that,” Kim said. “I was …read more

Americans Capture the Presidents Cup

The Presidents Cup played out exactly how many thought it would, as the Americans cruised to victory over the International team capture the Presidents Cup.  The margin of victory was 19 1/2 to 14 1/2, with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson leading the charge against Greg Norman’s overmatched International team.  Woods and Mickelson were outstanding all week, and finished the tournament undefeated.  As their reward, team captain Fred Couples awarded the pair two of the four autographed Michael Jordan jerseys.  The remaining two went to Anthony Kim and Steve Stricker.
Not much went right for the International team on Sunday. …read more

U.S. Maintains Slim Lead at Presidents Cup

On paper it looked like the American team would run away with this year’s Presidents Cup.  Fortunately for the International team, golf isn’t played on paper.  For the second straight day, the pesky International squad kept pace with the Yanks, this time in the fourballs matches, and after two days at the Presidents Cup, find themselves trailing the Americans by one point, 6 1/2 to 5 1/2.  Today it was two late rallies, one by the team of Ernie Els and Mike Weir, the other by Tim Clark and Vijay Singh, that kept Fred Couples’ American team from running away …read more

U.S. Grabs Early Lead at Presidents Cup

After the first day at the Presidents Cup, the U.S. team came out strong and dominated, but a gaffe by Justin Leonard on the final hole left the International team just one point behind, the score standing at 3.5 to 2.5.  Leonard missed a 3-footer on the 18th after he mistakenly thought Retief Goosen had conceded the putt.  Goosen did not, and Leonard’s putt caught the right edge of the cup and spun away.  That miss halved the match, and gave the International squad a very important half point, leaving them one point back of the Americans.

Presidents Cup Pairings Favor Americans

The pairings for the Presidents Cup were released today, and despite having a squad boasting impressive credentials, the International team still finds themselves as the underdog.  International team member Ernie Els believes that it would be a major coup if his squad can come out of tomorrow’s play all even.  Captain Greg Norman’s squad has history going against it as well–it has never won the Presidents Cup on American soil.  Heck, the International team only has one win in the history of the Presidents Cup, and that victory came 11 years ago.
Thursday’s opening day starts with six foursome matches.  Phil …read more

Ryo Ishikawa One to Watch at Presidents Cup

If Greg Norman was looking for a player to anchor his International squad at the upcoming Presidents Cup, he need look no further than Japanese phenom Ryo Ishikawa.  The 18-year-old heads into the event having won his fourth tournament of the year, the Tokai Classic.  It is the sixth tournament win of the young man’s career, his first coming when he was just 15-years-old.  He’s quickly become the Tiger Woods of Japanese golf.
On paper it appears the U.S. Team has the advantage, but as anyone who has ever played the game of golf, once you’re on the course, anything can …read more

Presidents Cup Captain’s Picks Announced

Today was the day that the two captain’s for the Presidents Cup, Fred Couples for the American squad and Greg Norman for the Internationals, were to reveal their two captain’s picks for their respective teams.  While Couples stuck to the script, taking Lucas Glover and Hunter Mahan, Norman went off on a tangent, choosing one of the best young players in the world, then confusing everyone by picking a player who seems to be getting by on reputation alone.  Norman’s choice of Ryo Ishikawa is a good one, for all the obvious reasons.  He’s won three times this year on …read more

Yang Finds Himself on Presidents Cup Team

As the saying goes, “to the victor go the spoils,” and that couldn’t be more true for 2009 PGA Championship winner Y.E. Yang.  In the span of a week, Yang has gone from being ranked No. 110 in the world, to besting Tiger Woods at Hazeltine, to becoming a member of the Presidents Cup International Team.
With his improbable victory at the PGA Championship, Yang saw his world ranking  jump from No. 110 to No. 34, which put him as the ninth-highest ranked golfer not eligible for either the American Presidents Cup team or the European Ryder Cup team.  The Presidents …read more
