What is the mindset it takes to be a leader? How can women improve their skills as owners and drivers of businesses, both within a larger workplace and within their own business? What kind of emotional intelligence, mindset and conviction does it take to be as powerful and clear as you can be in your life—and apply that to whatever you do?

This talk with Susan Mernit, who’s created content, developed product and run businesses—and non-profit endeavors—in a wide variety of settings, from companies as large as AOL to her own small startup—draws on her 15+ years of experience working in tech and media, and on conversations with dozens of entrepreneurial women. Find out more about some of the critical skills and mindsets that support success, how to nurture those in your own spirit, and how to make them a part of your ongoing life. This is a don’t-miss conversation if you’re looking to connect the dots and better integrate your own professional ambitions and your inner life.

(www.bizchicksrule.com) — Despite the fact that I was something of a minority as a non-mommyblogger amid hundreds of baby-toting mammas, I had a BLAST at BlogHer08 in San Francisco. The Who We Are track was fantastic, and I thoroughly enjoyed the sessions about blogging on your passions, "coming out" (or exposing your vulnerability) through blogging, and, during the Day-3 Unconference, blogging without boundaries and expectations.

One of the coolest things about the experience, aside from the fact that I got to learn more about how to get better at doing something I love, was interacting with these women who are sharing their lives online. It was a fascinating dynamic. They come from different places, different experiences, different backgrounds, but they — we — all have something in common: We love to write.

Whatever you do for a living, or whatever you WANT to be doing, there are other people out there who love it, too. Connect with them. Learn from them. I met amazing entrepreneurs and mompreneurs who all had a story to tell and something to teach me. I’ve never felt so smart or so dumb at the same time. Really, it was a great experience.

You can see my video blog posts about the conference at my freelance writing blog, Inkthinker:

Video: Arriving in San Francisco Thursday Night for BlogHer08

I’ll be posting a wrap-up video as soon as I can get my Internet to stop timing out every time I try to upload it. Who’d a thunk hotel wi-fi would be faster than my own? Sigh. The cost of living in rural Virginia… ;)

I’m a nervous traveller, I hate crowds, and I have a constant fear of becoming lost in strange cities and never being found (despite being literate, owning a cell phone, and never having left the country). Yesterday, I flew to Chicago by myself to attend a conference (SOBCon08) where I didn’t know a single person in a city I had never visited, where I have been sharing a hotel room with a complete stranger from another country. I couldn’t sleep for the two days before because of being totally freaked out, and when my plane was briefly diverted because of weather, I started having palpitations. I found myself thinking that this wasn’t such a good idea after all.

But check it out: This has been one of the best weekends of my life.

I have met DOZENS of amazing people, I’ve learned more than all of the conferences I’ve attended previously to date, and I’ve forged what I believe will be some lasting personal and professional relationships that I am VERY excited about.

And one particular presentation stood out to be, delivered by Wendy Piersall of Sparkplugging.com (formerly eMoms at Home). Some of my favorite quotes from her talk:

“In order for my [business] to grow, I had to grow with it.”

“Get our of your comfort zone. It’s not pretty, but you gotta do it.”

(in response to “I need more time”): “There is no more time. I need more YOU.”

I’ll be discussing the other sessions in more detail at my freelance writing blog Inkthinker next week since this is a blogging conference, but rest assured, I’ll highlight the relevant business info over here so you don’t miss anything. I’ll also be getting more into networking with some specific examples from this event, so stay tuned.

To Change Your Career, Or Not (and if so, how to successfully make it happen)

2008 is here and it may be time to make new decisions.

Are you bored with your current job? Do you feel you’re earning a living but not answering your calling? Is the security of your current job suffocating you? Are you considering a career change but not entirely sure whether you should make the shift? Or, are you certain you would like a change but not exactly sure what career to pursue?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then this seminar is for you!

Join us for a candid and interactive discussion with professional life coache – Dr. Lynn Friedman – a clinical psychologist who specializes in Career Coaching and Psychotherapy.

In creating your ideal work-life plan, our experts will start by helping you answer three important questions:

1) Should you change your career?
2) If yes, then how do you go about identifying the work that you love?
3) After identifying your ideal job, what steps should you take to transition to your new career. (And, importantly, how might you do it without taking entry level positions?).

Overall, we will examine:

- Low-risk ways to get started with your career change
- Power networking techniques
- How to make a career change manageable
- How to follow through on your goals
While my wonderful co-blogger and I will be writing and offering information on business and career planning, did you know the most important thing in any successful buisness is a good business plan? Yes, it’s true. Without one, you will be like a man driving with blindfolds on – - he’s moving along but he doesn’t know where he’s going.
(I love it!)

In March, I’m going to kick off a series on Business Planning 101 to help those of us (and I do mean us – me included) who perhaps need to develop a business plan, or tweak the one we have. There will be a lot of information on missions, objective, financing, etc. Now don’t get intimidated. This will work for you whether you are a home-based entrepreneur selling “widgets” or a corporate America Wall Street pro. Either way, we could all benefit from the solid, useful direction of a good business plan. I’m looking at the course lasting perhaps 6-8 weeks with LOTS of feedback, comments and particpation from you and your business model.

Any takers?

Yes, it’s true. I get my business tips from a 3-year old.
He stayed home today with a little cough (he has asthma) and the first thing he wanted to do when he found out that he didn’t have to go to school today was, “Can I play the Wii game Mommy, pllleeeeaaaassseee?” So, I said yes. I had/have a lot of work today and figured that would occupy him until I’m done. But before I got started on my work, I wanted to sit there and watch him play. He’s only three.

It’s amazing what those darn kids can pick up and learn isn’t it?!

Kyle’s favorite Wii sport is the tennis game. Mine too. I feel like Serena Williams when I’m playing! Alright, I’m not that good but I do enjoy playing it. But while I was sitting there watching my son play, I noticed how he deftly maneuvered himself and the balls just to make a score. He made the computer Wii man work very hard to return those really fast balls that Kyle was giving him. I was definitely paying attention. I asked Kyle just how did he do it. This is what he said – -a three year old:

“Mom, I hit the ball really hard to make him (the Wii man) go to one side. Then, when he’s over there I hit it really hard to the other side and I make a score! If he tries to come up to the net, then I hit it soft so the ball doesn’t go away. Then I win!!”

Amazing, huh? Strategizing techniques from a pre-schooler. But, what does that have to do with business? Everything! Kyle’s techniques really helped me see some things in business that would help me “step up my game”.

1. He never hit the ball prematurely. He waited to see what his competitor would do before he took action. For business, that means, don’t jump the gun before you know exactly which direction your competition is aiming towards. Now I don’t mean wait too late, but study them and assess where they’re going so you can counteract them, if at all possible.

2. He stayed focused the entire time. Although I was “whooping” and “wowing” him (his cheerleader section), he never once got so excited that he took his eyes off the game. In business, that means staying focused and paying attention to what’s going on in front of you… right now.

3. Never give up. Kyle kept playing the “Best of 5″ series, and a couple of them he lost horribly. But, at three years old and with the emotional development of a three year old, he never once cried, pouted or threw down the nunchuck when he lost. He simply started over and gave it his best, again. In business, that means just that. No matter how things go and how things work out, just keep on going. Continue to strategize, analyze your competition and give it all you’ve got.

So as you can see, I learned a lot in that space of time that I watched him play Wii. What’s also funny is while he was playing, he didn’t cough one time. So maybe the Wii game has healing properties too? Nah! Just maybe that’s what successful people do when they have problems. They are so focused on making something work that they forget about what’s trivial or what’s insignificant or of no consequence. They are so determined to make their business work, that they give it all they’ve got to ensure it’s success.

I think I’ll go play a quick doubles game to get myself motivated. Just call me Serena!

My husband and I tried to start a business together many, many years ago. When computers were new and all the rage and the internet was making its debut, he and I decided to custom build, sell and design computers for consumers. I would handle the administrative side of the business and he would handle the technical and physical side. We layed out a business plan, developed short and long-term goals for the business in addition to other things and we were set for business.

Only thing, was that my darling husband and I simply could not get along. He didn’t accept my ideas, I didn’t accept his. We could not agree on anything; supplies, office furniture, not even what color to paint the walls. So, not only did we nix our husband-wife team business, but he went on to start a separate business in computer consulting that turned out to be quite successful. Why couldn’t we make beautiful business together?

I found this post on Susan’s site at Women on Business and thought it quite interesting. Here are some things the book will tell you:

To some extent, business is still a man’s world; here’s how to play the game by their rules-and win:

1. Know what the average Alpha Male is thinking

2. Learn 10 things you need to know about men in business

3. Force men to take you seriously

4. Stop self-sabotage with male colleagues

5. Get all the credit you deserve

6. Be more confident and effective

7. Learn to take charge and lead

8. Never make excuses for failures

9. Keep secrets-it’s vital

10. Never bring personal issues to the office

11. Gain credibility and trust with Alphas

12. Never look for affirmation openly

13. Effectively deal with condescending or disrespectful men

14. Understand why being “nice” gets you nowhere

I think I’ll order this book today and add it to my library immediately. Maybe my husband and I can re-think this business partnership and make it work. I’ll let you know.

Not only does it take a lot of courage, but it also requires quite a bit of business sense and resources. Thankfully, the Internet has opened up a wide assortment of references to go to when considering whether or not to open for business. But, where do you start?

The first thing I did when I decided to start my own business was to find out where there was a need. The very first business I started was over fifteen years ago when I was working in corporate America as a Staff Placement Specialist. Big word for “hiring manager”. My job was to recruit, review and interview job applicants for jobs with potential employers. Not an easy task. While I loved what I did with interacting with job candidates, I found most of their resumes to be lacking poorly in highlighting their skills and qualifications. Thus, Resumes Plus was born! I developed and worked this business for quite some time until the advent of the resume templates and software pushed old-fashioned resume writing out of the competitive edge market. However, it was quite lucrative while it lasted and I had a blast doing it.

Find what works for you. Find what you love and what you’re already doing naturally. You may be surprised to find that a business may be right at your fingertips.
