I was At E3…Online

It was LIKE I WAS THERE!
In all actuality, I was sitting on my couch with my laptop in my lap watching the Sony press conference live but still, like I was there!
Yes. I know. I’m a dork.

Today in PlayStation: December 18, 2008

Wow, Christmas sure is coming up quickly, and in one week from today we’ll all be busy opening up gifts that are hopefully video game related. But if you can’t wait, treat yourself to one of the many PSN titles that will be hitting the network in today’s update.

Home has been updated, which should help alleviate some of the connection issues people were having. The update also includes the much needed addition of beards, but temporarily removes any form of voice chat. Compromises.
The second episode of Penny Arcade Adventures will be hitting the PlayStation Store later today, bringing with it …read more

Retro Replay: Ridge Racer Revolution

In this weeks Retro Replay, we take a look at one of the earliest 3D racers on the PSOne. This weeks game has also created some unintentional alliteration in the title. Woops.

When I first got my PSOne, I had two games with it: Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Ridge Racer Revolution. And while SFA2 was a terrific game that occupied a lot of my time, Ridge Racer was the reason I purchased the console in the first place. Here I was, in my own home, playing a 3D racing game. It was incredible.

Capcom has released an incredible press kit for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, known as the Super Turbo Hyper Champion Special Edition Pack. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be lining up to purchase one of the 300 limited editions they will be selling to the public. Here’s the news.

Sony is releasing its very own PlayStation credit card. The best part, you get $150 off a new PlayStation 3 if you sign up.
The sci-fi shoot ‘em up Soldner-X is coming to the PlayStation Network next week, for just $9.99.
Super Stardust Portable is now available on the European …read more

Retro Replay: Dino Crisis

We’re taking a break from all of the JRPGs we’ve been playing lately to jump into one of the forgotten PSOne era survival-horror games: Dino Crisis.

There really was little in the way of true horror games before the release of Resident Evil in 1996. Though it was cheesy, and didn’t age particularly well, it introduced horror gaming to the 3D generation and created the sub-genre of survival horror titles. However, while it was new for games, RE was pretty standard stuff by horror standards. A strange virus creates a town full of undead zombies, blah, blah, blah. Three years later …read more

Today in PlayStation: November 21, 2008

Well, it’s Friday, and we’ve got a healthy batch of news to start the weekend off right. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to start my training for the imminent release of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

For those of you anxiously awaiting David Jaffe’s next PlayStation Network game–he’s the creative mind behind God of War, Twisted Metal, and most recently Calling All Cars–you could have a long wait ahead of you, as the designer has said that it will most likely be released some time in 2010.
For all of you Trophy fiends out there, Sony has revealed …read more

TGIF! This weekend should mark a few unhealthy stretches of LittleBigPlanet play, along with a few trips through the muddy world of Pure, a very fun ATV racer. With that said, check out the news for today.

Rumors are continuing to swirl that a PSP version of LittleBigPlanet is in the works. Cross your fingers.
If you were looking forward to controller-based keypad for the PS3, I’ve got some bad news, as it has been delayed. The good news? It’s only until the first week of December.
Atlus was nice enough to reprint copies of the PSOne classic Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, …read more

Retro Replay: Star Ocean – The Second Story

After tackling The Legend of Dragoon last week, this time we take a look at another PSOne RPG: Star Ocean – The Second Story.

One of the trappings of earlier role playing games is that the majority of them are set in cliche medieval fantasy worlds. Even the few that break from the norm, such as the vague steampunk aesthetic of Final Fantasy VII, still go back to the swords and magic we’re all used to. This is what made me so excited to play Star Ocean: The Second Story back in 1999. I’ve always been more of a sci-fi …read more

Retro Replay: The Legend of Dragoon

Once a week, we take a classic PlayStation title and play it again, to see how it holds up years later. This week we’re going to take a look at The Legend of Dragoon, Sony’s answer to the 32 bit RPG boom.

For a lot of people in North America, Final Fantasy VII marked their introduction to the RPG genre. Sure, many claim that the SNES era was the Golden Age for RPG’s, but none had the impact of FFVII. The game combined an epic story, flashy visuals, and some great CG cut scenes into the first huge JRPG in North …read more
