Desktop Publishing is always everywhere now a days. In it’s early digital age, many publishing companies uses Microsoft Publisher and some uses its competitor’s software. Personally, I was also into Microsoft Publisher to do brochures, letterheads, postcards, and calling cards. I bet some are still using it now a days but I already shifted to a more advanced tool from Adobe called Adobe InDesign. Working with InDesign gives me more flexibility with my layouts and it offers many of design options and tools.

If you happened playing with this two desktop publishing tools and want to work Microsoft Publisher files directly into Adobe InDesign, here’s a thing to try – PUB2ID – Microsoft Publisher To Adobe InDesign.

PUB2ID (Microsoft Publisher to Adobe InDesign) is a plug-in for Adobe InDesign. It provides a quick, easy and affordable method for you to migrate all your Microsoft Publisher content into new Adobe InDesign documents. The conversion is enabled with a single click using the InDesign File->Open menu. No more re-creating documents from scratch; PUB2ID gives you a big head-start. (more details here)

There is no trial version but you can request a demo. Markzware, the software publishing company, hopefully will soon have a trial version download. PUB2ID v1.51 is compatible for Macintosh and Windows PC. You can buy the licensed software at a cost of $199.00 single license.

Wonder how those CD or DVD are getting good labels? With all the colors and images, just like your movies and musics collection? Or, do you have numerous copies of CD/DVD which you need to get a nice label? Worry no more, here is a quick eHow’s steps on how to get those labels done with Microsoft Publisher.

Launch Microsoft Publisher through the “Start” menu or from the Desktop and create a new file. Scroll down under the New Publication pane and click the right arrow next to Publications for Print. A list of choices will appear underneath and you will need to select Label.

Read down the list until you see “CD\DVD Labels” and select it by clicking on it. The right side of the window will display several types of labels for both the CD or DVD itself and the case of the disk. Make your choice of a pre-made template that you can edit or start fresh with a blank label. The margins are already outlined for both choices.

Add descriptive text to the CD or DVD label and case. Click “Insert” and “Text Box” from menu at the top of the page.

Save the label project. Click “File”, “Save As” and name the project in the File Name box and “Save.”

Print the project using the type of label that was suggested for use. Labels that are for the sleeve of the CD and DVD can be printed nicely on card stock since they do not necessarily have to be sticky back.

In my previous post about blogging from within Word 2007, I completely relied upon Word for the entire editing of the post.

Within that post though, I expressed a little bit of concern over the code that would be used by Word when posting into the Word press site.

After posting and reviewing the post, I can say that the code itself is pretty clean. The only problem I really had with the code, was actually the formatting and naming of the images that were inserted into the post.

Although you probably can’t tell since you don’t know what I named photos originally, I can guarantee you that I didn’t name them “022607_0323_Bloggingwit1.gif” etc. I’m not sure why Word couldn’t leave file name alone. It got the file in the correct location, please leave my file names alone. I named them what I did for a specific reason, don’t change them!

One area I failed to mention the interface for within Word, is the assignment of categories to your post. It’s very intuitive as well, with the added benefit of automatically pulling in your existing categories from you blog or letting you assign a new one as you need.

The image above also reminded me of one problem I had with Word’s interface of images. The insertion of pictures as a whole was much easier within the Word user experience than directly within WordPress. A problem aside from renaming the file names was also not being able to see the image you’ve inserted into your post.

After reading a recent post from Robert Scoble sharing his opinion of how Jon Udell talking about blogging within Word 2007 wasn’t very useful, I remembered that I hadn’t tried the blogging function from within Word since installing the final release of the Office software.
If you ever downloaded and installed Windows Live Writer, you’ll notice an almost identical interface and setup structure, which I’ve included screen shots of in this post.

As you can see, it’s pretty simple an interface to guide yourself through and setup. If you’re already familiar with the Word interface, extending your publishing options into a blog is basically a no-brainer.

The other benefit of blogging from within Word is offline composition and editing and waiting to publish to a variety of blogs all at once. This post is actually being composed within Word, but I’m sure you already expected that.

I’m liking this quite well, once I post this, I’ll look at the final post as it displays on the site and within the code itself in the WordPress editor. Hopefully it won’t have all the odd, screwy styling tags that normally appear if you paste anything from Word into an HTML editor.

As I was writing my last post about my experiences with Google Spreadsheets, I began thinking of some options for other solutions. If Microsoft wanted to shore-up some market share and make sure that webtop apps didn’t cut too much into their core business of packaged software delivery, they could offer a free, but stripped-down version of their basic Office applications.
Microsoft Office Lite, wouldn’t be much more than a collection of some of the free viewers they’ve already made available for core products in their suite. It’s also been mentioned by a number of other individuals around the Internet.

FAQ: OpenOffice

Microsoft Office ‘lite’ for the Web in the works?

Best of Free Software – Sunday, August 27, 2006

Most of these mentions though have been quite awhile in the past and are only speculating the development of something like this from Microsoft. You get nothing if you search for “Microsoft Office Lite” on Microsoft’s website.

Let’s think this through though. What if Microsoft offered a free or $19.95 stripped down version of their core Office apps Word, Excel, PowerPoint and maybe Publisher? These apps could obviously open any of their original file types, as well as do 70% of the average tasks needed by users.

You’ve got somewhat this type of cooperation between Outlook and Outlook Express right now. For Word, it wouldn’t be much more of an upgrade from Word Pad, just let you save as a .doc type and not lose any formatting that someone else could see in the full-blown version. I say add Publisher to the mix because I’m frequently working with clients who have mocked something up for a website I’m working on in Publisher. Luckily I’ve got Publisher already, but I don’t have it installed everywhere, or I’m at someone else’s computer where I need to open a document real quick to share it with someone. Could be a great option for a “Lite” HTML editor as well, although they’ve ditched the FrontPage app completely.

I think doing this would also encourage more loyalty to Microsoft products and provide a potential stepping stone for people to upgrade to the “premium” versions of the software packages if they find themselves pushing the boundaries of the “Lite” app.
