After a crazy end of the work week, things have started to settle down in MMA land … at least for now. Once we find out when Tito Ortiz is scheduled to fight in the UFC again and what happens to a certain free agent named Fedor Emelianenko, I’ll pass the word along. But for now let’s get into some more Quinton Rampage Jackson drama.

Quinton Jackson - Image: Zuma Press

It’s never a dull time with Rampage … just a few weeks ago he made waves after dry humping an obviously uncomfortable female reporter, and let’s not forget his crazy chase from the police that resulted in a forced psych hold (also referred to as a 5150 to people who follow Hollywood starlet news) last summer.

I don’t want to imply that Jackson is getting ready to go off the deep end again, but his behavior of late has started to be somewhat odd. In addition to the reporter molestation, he also got into a shoving match with Rashad Evans at UFC 100 while sitting with UFC owners Dana White and the Fertittas (they were not impressed). And now the generally cheerful former UFC champ has another guy who’s getting him hot under the collar: up and coming MMA prospect ‘King’ Mo Lawal.

As with most things MMA related, the initial beef is caught on camera: Quinton Jackson and Mo Lawal were headed to an event held by a mutual sponsor when some friendly ribbing over records and skill levels turned serious quick.

Lawal later wrote on the Underground forums (the same forums that the fake Kimo death story came from):

“Dont worry about me…..You need to focus on Rashad Evans. I aint gon waste no time with your ignorance. Keep on puttin on your routine and your corny over used punchlines….Our time for battle will come, You have your hands full with the former champ….I aint tryna be known for arguin with you. I feel bad for you cuz you playin yourself….You’ll see what Im talkin bout when your career end. Its a shame.”

Jackson played down the situation in a blog for Fighthype:

“This punk ass dude ‘King Mo’ is all butthurt because I don’t know who the hell he is. Straight up, if you’re not one of my friends or fighting one of my friends or a potential later opponent, I might not get a chance to watch your fight. So I didn’t know who the hell ‘King Mo’ was and now he crying like a little girl.”

Lawal is currently fighting in Japan for a company called Sengoku, so this isn’t going to be a fight that happens in the cage any time soon. But it looks like there’s a good chance these guys are going to keep jawing at eachother until it does.

We’re now up to month number seven of 2009 but the UFC is working hard to fill up their calendar until 2010, locking down a number of big fights for the end of the year. Tops is the battle of Ultimate Fighter 10 coaches Rashad Evans and Quinton Jackson, who will clash at UFC 107 in Memphis on December 12th. I’m extra hyped for this because my parents live in Tennessee too so I can use them as an excuse to see the UFC. Or is that supposed to be the other way around? Sorry mom.

Quinton Jackson - Image: Zuma Press

Working backwards, UFC 105 on November 14th is in the UK and expected to feature Michael Bisping vs Anderson Silva if Bisping gets past Dan Henderson. No word yet on what the plan is when that doesn’t happen…. UFC 104 the day before Halloween has Lyoto Machida versus Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, but the real match to watch on that one is the one that was just leaked yesterday: Shane Carwin versus Cain Velasquez. These guys are the future of the heavyweight division and it looks like the UFC is putting them in an eliminator to see who’s ready for a title run.

Those Chuck Liddell rumors I mentioned last week are still floating around, and there are enough headliner gaps in the UFC’s future to slot him into UFC 103 on September 19th or UFC 106 in Vegas on November 21st. Whatever ends up happening, you can pretty much guarantee that the rest of the year is going to be a very good one to be an MMA fan. Here’s the schedule:

UFC 101: August 8th in Philly with BJ Penn vs Kenny Florian
UFC 102: August 29th in Portland with Randy Couture vs Big Nog
UFC Fight Night 19: September 16th with Roger Huerta vs Gray Maynard
UFC 103: September 19th in Dallas
UFC 104: October 24th in Los Angeles with Lyoto Machida vs Shogun Rua
Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale: December 5th with Kimbo Slice
UFC 105: November 14th in Manchester UK
UFC 106: November 21st in Vegas
UFC 107: December 12th in Memphis with Quinton Jackson vs Rashad Evans

It looks like Quinton Jackson may be returning to court, according to a report on TMZ.com. A civil suit has been brought against him by the women who’s vehicle he hit in an incident over the summer. The interesting case, dubbed Rampage’s Rampage by mixed martial arts fans, saw a delusional Jackson lead police on a high speed chase across town in a custom built monster truck. He would later be checked into a mental health facility, where he tested negative for drugs and alcohol and was diagnosed as having suffered a psychotic break.

Quinton Jackson - Image: Zuma Press

Because of this, Rampage avoided jail time. But now a woman who’s vehicle was hit by the former UFC light heavyweight champion is taking him to court over a miscarriage she suffered a week after the accident. She was 16 weeks pregnant at the time. The district attorney cleared Rampage of criminal wrongdoing but this will be a civil trial … you know, the same kind of case that found OJ Simpson guilty after his criminal trial found him innocent. So there’s a lower burden of proof.

The 38 year old woman, Holli Griggs, is suing for $25,000 for personal injury, emotional distress, and property damage. No word yet on if Rampage will settle out of court or not. As for if he is guilty or not, here’s my assessment: Griggs was pretty old as far as pregnant women goes but it’s hard to imagine getting sideswiped by a monster truck helps a pregnancy along.

People trying to make Griggs out as a greedy ambulance chaser ignore the fact that she was minding her own damn business when Jackson hit her with his truck. Considering $25,000 is the kind of money he spends on pimping out one of his many rides, I think he should suck it up and pay the woman. You can see pictures of the damage done to the woman’s vehicle right here. So what do you think?

According to MMAWeekly.com, UFC President Dana White wouldn’t let one word slip as to who would be the next coaches.

We won’t know for sure until next week, but there is some speculation that is might just be the new UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida and former champ Quinton Jackson, whom he’ll be defending his title against at UFC 101.

Ultimate Fighter logo

According to MMAWeekly.com, UFC President Dana White wouldn’t let one word slip as to who would be the next coaches.

UFC president Dana White was asked point blank if the coaches for the tenth season of the show had been picked, and while he was able to confirm they have been chosen, he wouldn’t divulge any names.

“I’m not going to tell you. We start filming on the 1st and there’s a media day on like the 2nd or 3rd. All your questions will be answered then,” White responded.

While that would be interseting, I’d like to see someone else coach this time around. It’s nice to see new coaches every season and to be honest, I wasn;t all that impressed with Rampage’s caoching. Not that I could have done a better job, but I just like to see really good coaching going on instead of the coaches always sitting up against the all all the time.

I think Machida would be very interesting to see coach and what he could bring in and teach the contestants.

We’ll see who the next coaches are after the press meeting next week.

Here are the results for Saturdays UFC 96 PPV event which drew over 17,000 spectators at Columbus Ohio’s Nationwide Arena.

Kendall Grove defeated Jason Day with a strikes TKO in round 1 at 1:32, earning $22k for fighting and another $22k for the win. Jason day went took in $5k.

Tamdan McRory beat Ryan Madigan at 3:35 in round one with strikes, earning himself $20k ( $10k for fighting/ $10k for winning). Madigan earned $3k.

Gray Maynard got the unanimous decision over Jim Miller after three rounds. Maynard earned $20k (includes $10k bonus for the win). Miller earned $9k.

Matt Hamill knocked out Mark Munoz with a big head kick in round 1 at 3:53, earning $40k (20k+20k). Munoz earned $12k.

Matt Brown defeated Pete Sell via a strikes Tko with a furious ground and pound at 1:32 in round 1, earning him probably more respect than money. He earned $16k (including an $8k win bonus). Sell earned $12k.

Gabriel Gonzaga was defeated at the hands of Shane Carwin by a knockout punch. Gonzaga earned $60k, while Carwin won $16k and another $16k win bonus.

Quinton Jackson won by unanimous decision, beating Keith Jardine after 3 rounds, earning himself a whopping $325K that includes a fat $100k win bonus. Jardine earned $55k.

In other UFC News:

It was announced at the post fight that Frank Mir will have to postpone his fight with Brock Lesnar due to a knee injury Mir sustained during training. Read more on that at UFC.Com.

Quinton Jackson earned himself a title shot against Rashad Evans later this year.

Dana White was upset by referees decisions at UFC 96 when ref Rick Fike stopped the Shane Nelson Vs. Aaron Riley Fight and again when ref Ives Lavigne didn’t stop the Brown/ Sell fight sooner. It seems to me that there have been quite a few referees making bad calls as of late. It’s a tough job and I’m sure it’s not as easy being a ref as most would think. You can read more on this at MMA Junkie.

Last week I held a quick poll to see what the readers expected the outcome of UFC 96 main event between Jackson And Jardine to end.

Only one person got it 100% correct and that was me this morning after I already knew the results so that doesn’t count.

As you can see from the results, most thought Jackson would win by TKO. the other Majority thought it would for to decision in Jardine’s favor. Maybe this was expected after Jardine’s decision over Chuck Liddell.

UFC 96 is set for March 7th in Columbus, Ohio. As most know, the main event of the evening will be Keith Jardine Vs. Quinton Jackson in a light-heavyweight match.
Other confirmed televised main card fights are: Matt Hammill Vs. Mark Munoz and Shane Carwin Vs. Gabriel Gonzaga.
Preliminary card events include: Mike Patt Vs. Brandon Vera and Tim Boetsch Vs. Jason Brilz.
Kind of odd seeing Brandon Vera on a preliminary card. The Jardine and Jackson fight should be interesting as well as seeing the return of Matt Hammill.
