Congratulations, Freddie Barnes

Bowling Green’s Freddie Barnes hit a new high during this year’s Humanitarian Bowl. You may have never heard his name if you aren’t a Bowling Green fan, but maybe you should know it. This wide receiver set a new NCAA record for most catches in a single season.
With his fifth catch during the first semester of the team’s bowl game, Barnes hit 143 receptions, surpassing the 142-catch Division I record set by Houston’s Manny Hazard in 1989. People generally aren’t talking about Clemson football this year, but maybe they should be, because there is some real talent on the team. During their Week Four game against TCU, tailback CJ Spiller achieved something that has only been done once before in major college football.
The feat in question? After a 60-yard pass reception, he became the second person to ever have at least 2500 yards rushing, 1500 yards in kick off returns, 1000 yards receiving, and 500 yards in punt returns. Unlike poor Tyson Gay, whose world-record 100m sprint won’t count as a world record, Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff each set world records for 400 m individual medley swims in their respective Olympic trials.
