Movie Rentals Coming to YouTube

Right now, there are a ton of ways to rent a movie. You can head to Blockbuster, go to a RedBox kiosk, rent through your cable box — the list goes on. According to a report by the Associated Press, another option may be on the way. YouTube, the streaming online video service that is owned by Google, may soon add the option to rent movies.

Lionsgate Teams up with Redbox

On Tuesday, Redbox announced that they’ve agreed to a multi-year deal with Lionsgate. Redbox, the DVD kiosk company that has more than 15,000 locations across the United States, will now have better access to new releases from Lionsgate, in addition to titles that go directly to DVD.
Steve Beeks, the President and Co-COO of Lionsgate, said that he thought this arrangement was a win-win for both companies.

Are Redbox Kiosks Killing the DVD Industry?

You may have a Redbox kiosk near you, and if you do, you may have taken advantage of Redbox’s outrageously cheap DVD rentals, at $1.00 per night. However, several movie studios have expressed their outrage at Redbox, stating that the company is singlehandedly causing DVD sales to decline, and Fox Studios has even gone so far as to try to get its DVDs pulled from Redbox kiosks.
