Rating the Race: Talladega

Historically, Talladega has been one of those tracks that will either live up to its potential in providing some of the best hard-nosed, hardcore racing of the season … or, it will put you to sleep. Yet, somehow yesterday’s race fell somewhere right in the middle. Don’t get me wrong, it was a pretty decent race – it just wasn’t very exciting … at all.
I mean, I’m not particularly a huge fan of watching super speedway racing. I never have, and likely never will be. But, I can still distinguish when one of these races should be construed as something …read more

Question of the Week:
Should Jacques Villeneueve make his stock car debut at Talladega?
A) Yes, he’s a former Formula One Champion and can race any car at any track.
B) Sure. He won’t finish well, but what’s the worst that can happen?
C) It’s not a good idea. He’s a good driver, but Talladega’s a dangerous place to drive.
D) Absolutely Not! All it takes is for him to be in the vicinity of Elliot Saddler in the closing laps and this guy’s toast!
Results
A) 0%
B) 16.7%
C) 33.3%
D) 50%

Since I’m well aware that you you’re all juiced up for some Talladega racing as you wake up on this fine Saturday morning, only to find that there’s just not a whole lot going on out there right at the moment. So, just for you I’ve decided to go ahead and post a few notes & highlights from NASCAR Nation from throughout the week.
- Kyle Busch wins the Busch Series race in Kansas on Saturday.
- Greg Biffle runs out of fuel under caution to win a crazy, rain-filled race at the Nextel Cup Series race on Sunday.
- Kyle Busch is not happy with Dale …read more
Don’t Count Your Kansas Chickens Just Yet

Clint Bowyer has without a doubt shocked the entire racing nation thus far by sitting just fourteen points away from the Nextel Cup’s “Chase” leader Jimmie Johnson after three races since the start of the Chase. So far, Bowyer sat on the Pole and won the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire, finished 12th at Dover, and came home 2nd at the end of a crazy day in Kansas to begin his quest for NASCAR’s highest achievement. So far, he’s earned the most points of all the twelve drivers in contention for this year’s title and has picked up 46 points …read more
Harvick Chasing Familiar Territory

When Kevin Harvick fans took a look at the current NASCAR Nextel Cup Series points standings following the Lifelock 400 race held on Sunday at Kansas Speedway, they didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. Richard Childress’ no. 29 Shell Penzoil Team currently sits in fifth place – 126 points back of Chase leader Jimmie Johnson. So, why are Harvick fans not worried?
Since NASCAR moved to their “Chase” format at the beginning of the 2004 racing season, Harvick has made the Chase just one other time, and that was last year and he finished fourth in points, just 78 points …read more
Fantasy Preview – Talladega

Well, Sunday was certainly a crazy day in Kansas, there’s no denying that. Nonetheless, I was dead on with my pre-race predictions from a performance standpoint, and got 2/3 as far as actual finishes were concerned. Stewart lived up to my expectations during the race, but a cut tire skewed his finish and was the only black mark on my Kansas Fantasy Preview.
This week, the series makes its way down south to Talladega, and I’ve decided to approach my Fantasy Previews in a slightly different manner for you. From here on out, I’ll actually list out my top six finishers …read more

1. Jeff Gordon (1) – Jeff looked quite impressive at the start of the race last week at Kansas, but began to fade in the middle portion of the day. He was able to rebound and keep his nose clean, ultimately bringing home a fifth place finish and keeping his “Drive for Five” dreams alive and very realistic.
2. Jimmie Johnson (2) – The no. 48 Lowes Chevrolet Team was able to bring home their first top 5 finish since the beginning of the Chase – which ironically began just one race after Jimmie brought home the checkered flag at Richmond. …read more

No Repricussions Expected For Stewart

To follow up on a topic that I covered over the weekend, NASCAR President Jim Hunter has stated that the sanctioning body does not plan to levy any fines or penalties to Stewart for swearing on television during a live feed from an ESPN2 cameraman on Saturday during practice sessions. Despite the fact that several drivers in the sport have been penalized for similar instances (Stewart on more than one occassion), Hunter says that this incident is different simply because Tony was not aware that they were on live television and there was no official interview being conducted.

Junior Brings Out the Tiger

Kyle Busch entered Sunday’s race at Kansas fourth in points and only 10 points separated he and Chase leader Jeff Gordon. Dale Earnhardt Jr. entered the race thirteenth in the standings and missed out on his chances for a championship run by failing to make the Chase for the Cup at Richmond three weeks ago.
While Junior is ineligible for championship contention this year, he is definitely a man on a mission as he has been unable to win a race the entire season and this will be his final year racing for DEI. On lap twenty-seven, Earnhardt was racing with …read more
