G.I. Joe: Cobra Strike for Atari 2600. Ewwww!
I’ve just viewed IGN’s video preview of the cast for the upcoming live action G.I. Joe the Movie, and it has gotten my loins all fired up for anything and everything G.I. Joe—especially the Baroness. Rawrr!
If you don’t have time to go through the video, you can check out Filmgecko’s writeup on the G.I. Joe movie cast.
Of course, since this blog is about classic and retro games, I’ve opted to, at least for the meantime, stick to the topic and give you a review of what is probably the first G.I. Joe video game, G.I. Joe: Cobra Strike for the …read more
Is Simon Belmont gay?
I’ve been meaning to pose this question for a very long time … as in since I was, hmmm, a little boy. Not that there’s anything wrong with being gay. The question actually comes from the mind of a disturbed lad nicknamed seanbateman42069@yahoo.com on The SHIZZ.org discussion boards.
Here’s an excerpt from his post entitled, “For The People That Watched Captain N As A Kid, I have a ‘?’ “:
Was Simon Belmont gay?
Not that it matters or anything, but I remember being eight (years old) and thinking he was a little, hmmm, off, you could say. Today was Day One of …read more
Boulder Dash: Rocks! A rockin’ remake
I never thought I’d see the day that Boulder Dash gets a makeover for modern consoles. Well, the game isn’t that old. Boulder Dash was originally released in 1984 for the Apple II, MSX, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Atari 400/800 home computers. Later, the game was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, Acorn Electron (what the hell is an Acorn Electron?), Amstrad CPC, Amiga, and the PC. I just find Boulder Dash—the original, that is—so unimaginative and boring.
Wait! Before you start stoning me, you might want to take a gander at this:
Like I said, unimaginative and boring.
Fortunately for Boulder …read more
Swashbuckler: I don’t know why I even played this game
I guess you already know how I feel about Swashbuckler, a 1982 computer game for the Apple II created by Paul Stephenson and published by Datamost. Sorry, Paul, it’s just so … boring.
Oh, I used to enjoy playing it, back when I was, what, 10 years old. I thought I could rekindle the flame by watching a video of Swashbuckler, but no go, unlike other Apple II video games.
The problem: Swashbuckler grew old pretty quickly. Check out this entry in Wikipedia about the reception of the game (emphasis in bold face mine):
Computer Gaming World gave Swashbuckler a glowing review, only …read more
Sonic Spoof #1: The Dark Knight
I’ve been scouring YouTube and other sites that allow users to upload their videos again for something useful or entertaining. The first video I found is supposed to be a Sonic the Hedgehog spoof. After watching the entire video, however, I discovered that it’s a spoof of the trailer for Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Here, go check it out for yourself:
Not exactly what I was looking for. I was thinking more along the lines of those Mario Brothers spoofs and fanfic videos I showed you before. Oh, don’t mind those other videos that made our red jumper-clad hero look …read more
Simon Belmont faints
I know, I know. You’re probably asking, “What the hell do you think you’re doing watching an 80s cartoon that trashed one of Nintendo’s most beloved characters?”
The answer is: I just had to see if my loathing for the Captain Nintendo version of Simon Belmont is gone. Apparently, it’s still there. The only way this feeling will dissipate is when they actually give the vain dude a movie of his own.
Hey, Van Helsing got his own film, I don’t see why Simon Belmont, vampire hunter, can’t have one.
Castlevania: No-death run
Hey, these videos may not show the usual speed run, but I tip my hat at the player-cum-video poster’s ability to stay clear of danger. I’m not really a big fan of Simon Belmont, but I’m inclined to give Castlevania on the Nintendo Entertainment System another go after watching these videos:
Oh, and in case you’re wondering if I’m also in the mood to forgive Simon Belmont’s nasty behavior in Captain Nintendo (you know, that Saturday morning cartoon series), it’s a NO.
Legend of Zelda cartoon: Real cheesy
In my constant search for new content, I’ve come across this video showing the intro of the Legend of Zelda animated series. Sigh. Wish I hadn’t watched it.
Tamagotchi: Pikachu, I choose you! Oops, wrong product
Actually, when I came across the word Tamagotchi last week, almost a decade since the little buggers first hit the shelves of novelty shops in my corner of the world, what raced in my head was an image of Pokemon’s Pikachu dancing and prancing around this tiny LCD screen on my keychain. LoL.
For those of you who don’t know what Tamagotchi is, I refer you to the description provided in Wikipedia:
The Tamagotchi is a handheld digital pet created in 1996 by Aki Maita and sold by Bandai. Over 10 million Tamagotchis have been sold as of 2005. The Tamagotchi is …read more
Spiderman on Atari 2600 sucks, totally
It seems I’m stuck with the word suck till I actually play a good classic video game. Trouble is, I can’t find my Starcraft and Total Annihilation installers. Speaking of stuck, I’m also stuck watching videos of old games instead of playing them. Talk about a streak of bad luck.
Anyway, here I am searching for references to some old games I used to play when I came across a video on YouTube featuring Spiderman for the Atari 2600. My first thought: “Damn, it totally sucks!” There I go again with the word.
Well, go check it out and tell me it …read more
