Re:Retro viewer: That’s not Star Trek!

And, yes, I’ll be the first to admit that the video I posted with the article, Woot! Star Trek: The Motion Picture for the Vectrex isn’t, well, Star Trek: The Motion Picture for the Vectrex Arcade System. It’s actually a messed up version of Scramble.
Here’s a video of Scramble that YouTube user tr0d took from the series How to Beat Home Video Games:

Okay. Now that the mix up has been cleared, I’d like to thank Chris Herr for the heads up. Here’s a video of the real Star Trek: The Motion Picture for the Vectrex:

Woot! Star Trek: The Motion Picture for the Vectrex

Being a Trekkie, or Trekker, as my good friend Filemon is wont to point out, anything that has something to do with Star Trek piques my interest. Now couple this interest with video games, then you’ve got an explosive combination.
Speaking of explosive, this video I found on YouTube totally blew me away:

As you may have already surmised from the title, the video features the classic game Star Trek: The Motion Picture for the Vectrex.
The Vectrex? Oh, yeah, you might not have heard of this 80s console. It’s an 8-bit video game console developed by Smith Engineering and distributed by General …read more

SEGA waxes nostalgic, to release Ultimate Mega Drive Collection for Xbox 360, PS3

PC World Australia may have beaten me to the punch, but the news about SEGA’s impending release of the Ultimate Mega Drive Collection for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is still news.
Late last year, the SEGA Ultimate Mega Drive Collection had merely been a rumor. Now, it’s a reality, and it’s coming to video game store shelves this January 26, at least in Australia. Is it also slated for release in North America and Europe? I really have no idea.
All I know is what’s in the SEGA Ultimate Mega Drive Collection. Here’s a partial rundown: Sonic the Hedgehog (1, …read more

Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) in Shinobi commercial

Have you seen it? Or if you\’ve seen it, do you remember it? Well, if you haven\’t seen it or wish to refresh your memory, go take a gander:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFor those who are clueless as to who Hiro Nakamura and Masi Oka are, they are one and the same but not really. Even the iPhone is going retro

I know, I know … it was only a matter of time before the powerful allure of the past caught up with the equally powerful pull of the future, but the news is surprising nonetheless. Yes, retro games are now available for the iPhone, the 4.5 inch by 2.4 inch by 0.48 inch marvel of technology created by Apple, and have been for some time now.\r\n\r\nIGN\’s Levi Buchanan gives us the lowdown on retro video games on the iPhone:\r\n\r\n
The iPhone may be the newest gaming rig on the field, but it\’s starting to host its fair share of yesteryear. Some …read more

Super Mario Brothers dethroned as best seller

It was bound to happen sooner or later, so don’t feel bad. Can you guess what game dethroned good ol’ Mario? Here’s a hint:

Well, it’s not much of a hint since the video turns into a dead giveaway ten seconds after it starts. Hey, at least you know what game toppled Super Mario Brothers as the best selling video game of all time.
Here’s an excerpt from Yahoo! Games’ Ben Silverman’s story “Wii Sports is best-selling game ever”:
According to game-tracking website VGChartz, sales of Nintendo’s pop-culture phenom Wii Sports have surpassed those of legendary Super Mario Bros., making the breakout Wii …read more

10 Manliest Video Games of All Time: What, no Leisure Suit Larry?!?

I’ve just finished browsing through Arthur’s Hall of Viking Manliness’ 10 Manliest Video Games of All Time, and I have to say, yes, the list is indeed full of manly video games.
How did the guys up at Arthur’s Hall come up with the idea of giving the world such a list of video games? Shatner (yes, after William Shatner), Arthur’s Viking Assistant, gives us the details:
I had a discussion with Arthur the other day regarding the question, “Are video games manly?” While wasting your life away on a couch playing video games isn’t quite as manly as killing small animals …read more

Metroid Quarantine: Samus Aran and her universe in Lego

Dangnabit! The title is a dead giveaway! Well, I\’d like you to take a gander at the image below:\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\nPretty little Lego spaceship, eh? It\’s actually a model of Samus Aran\’s gunship in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and is part of a collection of images on Flickr known as Metroid Quarantine. The collection of Metroid-related pictures is but the tip of the iceberg. The group also has a website known as (what else!) Metroid Quarantine, The Metroid Blog.\r\n\r\nGo check out Metroid Quarantine\’s other photos.\r\n\r\nOh, and if you\’re wondering what Samus Aran\’s gunship looks like in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, here\’s a …read more

Company of Heroes machinima: Frank and Dale #1

Yes, it’s machinima time once again. This time, let’s take a look at Company of Heroes machinima Frank and Dale – Episode 1, otherwise known as Field. In the first installment of the series, created by Richard BF, a bloke from Australia, we find Frank and Dale (yes, they’re the lead characters in the series) in a field somewhere in Europe during World War II. And it’s not just any field, as Frank points out to Dale.
Why don’t I just shut up and let you watch the video:

The first time I watched the clip, I found the humor dry. No …read more

Lego Metroid Prime trailer

Talk about fanaticism for both Metroid and Lego. This guy, FederArtsRamen, has recreated Metroid and Samus Aran’s Varia Suit’s shiny butt in Lego bricks—and it looks really cool. Watching the video makes me wish Lego and Nintendo would tie up to produce a line of, well, Metroid Lego. I’m sure it’ll be a hit.
Anyway, let me show you the video first:

Although the set or background needs work, you’ve got to admit that Samus and her ship rock.
I’m a big fan of Lego myself, having built wonderful models out of the colored bricks when I was, well, young … er. Here’s …read more
