It’s finally Friday, which for most of us means a weekend full of gaming up ahead. If you haven’t played WipEout HD yet, be sure to download the PSN demo that was released yesterday. It really is one of the best games on the PS3. Here are today’s headlines:

• Resistance 2 is getting a patch, which should help some multiplayer and balancing issues. Get all the details here.
• Burnout Paradise is also getting patched, with a whole heap of updates for the open world racer.
• The sci-fi tower defense game Savage Moon should be hitting the PlayStation Network in the next few weeks.
• A new space is coming to Home, and it looks like some sort of cafe.
• Tenchu 4 is coming to North American PSPsthanks to publisher Ubisoft.

Today in PlayStation: January 23, 2009

It’s officially Home day, and I’ll be spending some time later today diving into Sony’s online world. Expect an impressions post soon. That is, if I can muster up the self-control not to pop in LittleBigPlanet and download all of the new costumes this week :)

• This weeks free LittleBigPlanet DLC brings out the Christmas cheer, with an adorable Santa Suit to dress up your little Sackboy. Should go well with the paid Street Fighter costumes that will also be available.
• Resistance 2 fans are in for a treat, as Insomniac is updating the game with a slew of free themes, map packs, and a new trailer.
• The PS3 version of Echochrome is being updated with Trophy support and a bunch of new, user-generated levels.
• Having just released a new version of the PSP, Sony has said it has no plans for a PSP 2 currently in the works.

Today in PlayStation: December 11, 2008

If you’re a fan of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (and let’s face it, who isn’t), today is a great day as a sequel has officially been revealed. Unfortunately, to get an early glimpse of the game you will have to brave through the always terrible Spike Video Game Awards. Anyways, on to the headlines:

• Naughty Dog has finally revealed the sequel to Uncharted, with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Check out the January issue of Game Informer for more details.
• If you can’t wait for Kratos’ next adventure, be sure to tune into the Spike Video Game Awards, where you’ll be able to get a sneak peek at God of War III.
• Yakuza 3 will be getting the bundle treatment in Japan, as it will be paired alongside a ceramic white PS3.
• The PS3 is getting yet another firmware update. The latest one should fix some of the issues the web browser has dealing with flash based video, including the addition of full-screen support.
• Resistance 2 isn’t doing so well in the UK. In fact, the game has sold less than its predecessor so far.

Today in PlayStation: December 2, 2008

Today is chock full of PlayStation news, so be sure to check out the following links to find out what’s new with the PS3 and PSP. And be sure to check out the latest PSN content, which is full of all kinds of great games and deals. If you haven’t played Pixeljunk Eden yet, this is the week to do so.

• We all know that the PS3 can do more then play games, but apparently it’s also one of the best Bul-Ray players on the market. At least, according to CNN.
• Unlike a number of PS3 titles, the upcoming Killzone 2 won’t require a hard drive install. In fact, it’s not even an option.
• We don’t know when, but it looks like a demo for Resident Evil 5 will be hitting the PlayStation Network sometime before the game is released in North America.
• In honor of the American Thanksgiving, this weeks LittleBigPlanet free DLC is none other then a turkey hat. But if you have some money to burn, you can also pick up a Resistance 2 Chimera costume.
• The PSN is also having an awesome sale, with 5 great games available for just $4.99 each: The Last Guy, Pixeljunk Eden, Echochrome, Commando 3, and Novastrike.
• It looks like the previously believed Wii-exclusive title Tenchu 4 will now be coming to the PSP as well.
• Sony has released a trailer for the PSP version of Everyday Shooter, and it looks pretty much exactly the same as the PS3 game. Which, of course, is a good thing.
• We also have prices for a couple of upcoming PS3 peripherals. The Wireless keypad will run gamers $49.99, meanwhile an AC adaptor for charging controllers and headsets will cost $24.99.
• And, in case you were wondering, Ubisoft is indeed hard at work on the sequel to Assassin’s Creed.

Today in PlayStation: November 26, 2008

It’s another light news day, but there is something that’s even lighter: my wallet. That’s right, LittleBigPlanet is going to bankrupt me. I’m not one for excessive DLC, but man, who can resist those adorable little outfits?! I know it’s sad, but I can’t wait until Thursday to dress up my little Sackboy as a shark. Will blog for PSN points! On to the news.

• Love the turn-based strategy action of Valkyria Chronicles? Love the alternate history even more? Well, you’re in luck, as an anime based on the game is coming soon, from the same company that made the Persona 3 anime. Unfortunately, chances are this one will stay Japan-only.
• LittleBigPlanet fans will be getting a healthy dose of new Sackboy (or girl) outfits, including an absolutely adorable shark suit. Just try and not download them.
• Though the reviews of Resistance 2 have been devisive to say the least, the co-op and multiplayer alone make it worth a shot. If you’re interested in what it takes to make a AAA shooter, check out this in-depth feature over at Gamasutra.
• Despite being launched alongside a ton of great shooters, Far Cry 2 is a commercial success, selling over 1 million copies already.

The Shooter Fan – Resistance 2 (PS3)

This sequel to one of the better early PS3 games, continues its alternate history story in which a strange alien race invades the planet. The sequel sees the fight taken to America, with battles spanning cities like Chicago and San Francisco. Unfortunately, the single-player campaign hasn’t quite lived up to the hype, and is somewhat of a disappointment story wise. But wait! While it may not have the best plot, R2 makes up for it with an outstanding multiplayer component. This includes an 8 player co-op campaign and up to 60 player online battles.

The Racing Fan – MotorStorm: Pacific Rift (PS3)

Also a sequel to a great PS3 launch title, Pacific Rift builds upon its predecessor in many different ways. First off, the new jungle setting helps keep things interesting, as opposed to the drab muddy brown desert of the original. There are also double the amount of tracks this time around, with 16 courses set in beaches, volcanoes, and even an abandoned sugar factory. There is also a brand new class of vehicle: the monster truck. The biggest vehicle class is slow and tough to control, but it can run over any other vehicle that is unfortunate enough to get in its path.

The Role-Player – Fallout 3 (PS3)

As opposed to the medieval fantasy setting of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which was made by the same developers, Fallout 3 takes place in a dark, gritty, post-apocalyptic Washington, D.C. The biggest draw of the game is that everything you do has an effect on the world, changing the characters around you and affecting the final ending. For example, with the first town you come across in the game, you have the option to completely obliterate the entire area or disarm the bomb and save everyone. These kinds of decisions help keep you engrossed in the world, so make sure whoever you are buying for has plenty of free time.

The Creative Type – LittleBigPlanet (PS3)

For the budding game designer on your list you may want to pick up LittleBigPlanet. The game features an astounding amount of tools that allow you to create all sorts of different levels and objects, which can then be shared online with the entire LBP community. Add to this the adorable visuals and whimsical soundtrack, and you have what could be the best thing to hit the platforming genre since Super Mario Galaxy.
