You don’t always have to stay idle while your muscles are recovering. While working out today, I had a light bulb for today’s blog entry. I had just finished some grueling curl-step ups which had me breathing hard and both my biceps and legs burning. I did rest for a few seconds, but soon I headed for back extensions and started another exercise.

Back extensions are not only easier, but they involve a different primary muscle group and low reliance on the sub group of legs. In effect, I had a rest even though I was still working out a needed exercise. This is a great way to build a compact workout that allows you to get in more sets and more exercises in less time.

Mentally you will feel that you need to stop after a hard exercise, but by changing to an easier exercise, using less weight, or changing to a new muscle group you can inject more exercises into less time. Obviously, you will still need rests but this type of integration lessens that amount of rest.

I know I promised you the bench workouts for this blog, but I’m blogging mobile so I don’t have them with me. I’ll get those to you though. I won’t forget these.
