The state of Rhode Island announced today it will close the government for 12 days starting September 4.
Officials say the drastic step was needed because they didn’t think anyone would notice if they only closed for a week.
Even though it’s the smallest state in the Union (and continues to suffer badly from panhandle envy when compared to states like Florida and Oklahoma), Rhode Island has the fifth highest average annual salary for government workers at just over $53,000 a year.
