Defending Gold Medalist, Mariel Zagunis (pictured above) from Beaverton, Oregon, successfully defended her Gold Medal by defeating fellow American, Sada Jacobson 15 to 8 in the women’s individual sabre competition. Becca Ward, also from the United States, earned the Bronze Medal. Their medals were the first to be awarded to the United States in the Beijing Games.
Prior to Zagunis’ win at the 2004 Games, no American had won a fencing Gold Medal in more than 100 years.
The American women are favored to win the team sabre competition.
