Although Hoyer is regarded highly by various baseball experts, he’s sure to suffer culture shock going from the endless pockets in Boston to the tight purse in San Diego. It’s expected that the Padres will have less than $50 million to spend on players in the 2010 baseball season.

The Padres have a few good pieces but they are probably about two years away from being legit contenders. We’ll see if Hoyer is up to the job and if he can bring some Red Sox mojo to the west coast.

Kevin Towers was fired two weeks ago from his post as GM for the Padres. And though the interviewing process has been relatively under wraps, it is expected that Jed Hoyer, the assistant GM of the Red Sox, may be the leading candidate.

According to the Associated Press, sources say that Ng interviewed with Padres CEO and vice chairman Jeff Moorad on Saturday. However neither Ng nor Moorad would comment.

Prior to this season, Hoffman pitched with the San Diego Padres since 1993. After a relatively mediocre season in 2008, Hoffman ended up signing a deal worth about $6 million to join the Brewers.

This move is good news for the Brewers because they would have had a gaping hole at closer if Hoffman would have left. Additionally, the closer is regarded as a fantastic veteran leader who works well with younger teammates.

On Saturday against the Kansas City Royals, Peavy went five innings and gave up three hits, two walks and three earned runs while striking out five batters. Thanks to strong run support, Peavy was able to pick up the win as the White Sox cruised to a 13-3 victory.

The White Sox traded for Peavy to help make a push for the 2009 baseball playoffs. But after realizing he wasn’t ready and the team kept disappointing, the White Sox were patient in getting Peavy back on the big league level.

While with the Padres this year, Peavy was 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA. The 28-year-old had his best season in 2007 when he went 19-6 with a 2.54 ERA. He was also named the NL Cy Young Award winner that season.

As it stands, the White Sox are 5.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.

Currently, Peavy is on the disabled list with an ankle injury. The White Sox believe that he’ll be able to return to the mound late in the month of August. Considering they’ve waited since May to add him to the roster, this wait isn’t too bad.

In return, the Padres got four pitching prospects: Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Adama Russell and Dexter Carter. Richard and Poreda have pitched in the big leagues this year while Russell and Carter have been in the minors.

Currently, the White Sox are 1.5 games back in the AL Central behind the Detroit Tigers. They lead the Minnesota Twins by 1.5 games.

Due to struggles, this was Sanchez’s first start since June 22nd. His last two appearances were in a relief role.

The Giants were able to beat the San Diego Padres 8-0 to improve their record to 48-38. The loss dropped the Padres to 35-51.

Ramirez finished the game 1-for-3. On the season, he’s hitting .337 with seven homers, 21 RBIs and 23 runs. His on-base percentage is .480 and his OPS is 1.123.

Even with the loss, the Dodgers have baseball’s best record at 51-30. The disappointing Padres upped their record to 35-45 with the win.

The Dodgers play the Padres again on Sunday before starting a series against the New York Mets. Ramirez is expected to keep playing left field and hitting in the three hole in the lineup.

The latest turn in Peavy’s season is an ankle injury that will keep him off the mound for at least four weeks. Following an MRI, Peavy has been diagnosed with a torn right tibialis tendon.

He will stay in a walking boot for one month, so it’s unknown how long he will end up missing. A good guess would be that he’ll return after the 2009 MLB All-Star Game.

On the season, Peavy has a 3.97 ERA with a record of 6-6. In May, Peavy was very good — compiling a 2.13 ERA in six starts, while striking out 52 batters in 42.1 innings.

Once Peavy is healthy again, expect trade rumors to heat back up.

Gwynn Jr. is currently hitting over .300 in the minor leagues. At 26, his time as a legit baseball prospect is running out. However, in San Diego, he may get more time on the field to show what he can do.

Gwynn Jr. is currently hitting over .300 in the minor leagues. At 26, his time as a legit baseball prospect is running out. However, in San Diego, he may get more time on the field to show what he can do.

Last year, Gwynn Jr. hit .190 in 42 at-bats with the Brewers. His best season came in 2007 when he hit .260 with 13 runs, ten RBI and eight stolen bases in 123 at-bats.

Dad, as most baseball fans are aware, was a legend. He played for the Padres from 1982 to 2001. He led the NL in batting average eight times and had a .338 average in his 20 years in baseball. His best year may have come in 1997 when he hit .372 with 220 hits, 49 doubles, 17 homers, 119 RBI and 97 runs.

Jody Gerut was a very good story last year. After being out of baseball in 2006 and 2007, he returned in 2008 to hit .296 with 14 homers and 43 RBIs in 328 at-bats. This year, though, Gerut wasn’t doing so hot. He’s hitting .221 in his first 113 at-bats. Perhaps a change of scenery will do him good.

As for Gwynn Jr., he’ll now have a chance to walk in his father’s footsteps with the Padres.
