The Chargers remember last year and are looking forward to this year.

“We go up to freezing-cold Foxborough with what I called ‘The walking wounded’ against what people were calling one of the greatest teams ever assembled,” general manager A.J. Smith says. “It’s 14-12 in the fourth quarter and we fall short.

“But fast forward to now. Our players felt what it was like to be in a wild-card, divisional and AFC championship game … I feel we’re a playoff-caliber team that has a chance to go to the Super Bowl. I think we have a chance to win it.”

The Chargers are loaded on both sides of the ball with superstars LaDainian Tomlinson and Phillip Rivers leading the offense.

Castillo hopes to become one of those Superstars, and with 13 sacks in his 34 starts, he is well on the way.

On June 23rd, LT will be 29 years old.

The NFL works almost in dog years and 29 for a running back is getting up there.

The question for the NFL and Fantasy Football team owners is at what age will production begin to tail off?

Hey, 29 does not seem too old to me. Your intrepid author would love to be 29 again, but then if you add in 7 seasons of 300 plus carries and it gets a little more problematic.

It’s true, Tomlinson will be 29 at the start of the 2008 season. While his age won’t keep him from being one of the first three backs taken in all fantasy drafts, it could be enough to make some owners take Adrian Peterson ahead of him. Tomlinson has recorded 300-plus carries in all seven seasons at the NFL level, and the injured knee he sustained late the postseason could be an indication that the wear and tear could set in soon. However, his value won’t fall until at least 2009 drafts. source

Fred Taylor

There are a lot of backs older than Tomlinson that had great seasons last year as well, like Fred Taylor. What about Fred?

Fred Taylor, Jacksonville (age 32): Taylor, who turned 32 in January, turned out to be a solid asset for owners late last season. He rushed for 100-plus yards and four touchdowns in Weeks 12-16 and showed the skills and abilities that made him worth a first-round selection in fantasy drafts earlier in his career. But with 2,285 regular-season carries under his belt and the more versatile (and much younger) Maurice Jones-Drew in the backfield mix, Taylor could be hard pressed to reach his 2007 totals.

The list goes on Thomas Jones of the Jets, Edgerrin James of the Cards, Deuce McAllister of the Saints, and so on.

The popular two back system my sustain some of them, but look at the Colts and Pats. Both of those teams dropped the older back last year, after running the two back system a year before.

Is the two back system a sign the older back is on his way out?

NFL Football Fan Question Can LT come back for 300 more productive carries?

Asante Samuel does the happy dance, and why not, he has 100 million reasons

After the 80 million dollar deal for Nate Clements last year, the sky is the limit for the New England Patriots Asante Samuel.
Word has it, if you look a little deeper, there was some contract problems with Nate and it is now considered a 7 year 64 million dollar contract. Whatever.
What is does mean is that Asante Samuel will benefit from the raised bar. Good corners are hard to find.

Samuels has the words “Get Rich to This” tattooed on his left shoulder and get rich he will.

In fact, the Patriots cannot franchise him either, because they did that last year, so Asante is an unrestricted free agent just like you and me, only he is a great cornerback and teams want to give him a whole lot of money.

We could be talking a 100 million dollar deal!

Believe me; a number of other corners are watching this deal go down with great interest.

That fact was of keen interest to a number of players in action Sunday. The Denver Broncos’ Champ Bailey, once the highest paid cornerback in the league, wants to see what Samuel is offered and accepts. Cornerback Marcus Trufant, who is likely to be franchised by the Seattle Seahawks this month, is interested. Finally, budding star Antonio Cromartie of San Diego, who has the size, speed and skill to be the best of all of them, could be talking to the Chargers about an extension in the next couple of years. source

Yes, show me the money!

You have to wonder how this will affect the salaries for all positions in the NFL.

NFL Football Fan Question Which team is going to fork over the big cash for Asante Samuel?

Get your quarterback.

That is the plan.

The plan can take you to the Super Bowl.

It seems simple, but it is not. This is the formula that the New England Patriots followed, as well as the New York Giants, and San Diego Chargers. Green Bay was a little different, because 38 year old Brett Favre has been around much longer than any of the linemen.

In order to follow this plan, you need a great talent evaluator.

That person has to be backed up and believed in by the organization. Usually it is not a coach, because coaches have a tendency to watch a game and get excited about some player they have to have.

Usually the talent evaluator becomes the most important person in the management team.

“The No. 1 key for a successful franchise — even more important than the owner and head coach — is an outstanding talent evaluator,” says former Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson, now an analyst for Fox, who won two Super Bowls in the 1990s with Dallas while laying the groundwork for another Cowboys crown. source

These are not men that are out on the front lines reaping headlines, but there value is unmistakable.

“There’s not that many in the league that are recognized,” Johnson says of the men who work behind the scenes. “There are some coaches who are good at it like (Indianapolis’) Tony Dungy and (New England’s) Bill Belichick. And that’s an added bonus.

“But that talent evaluator is the most important position in the entire organization.”

Listen to what Gil Brandt had to say about the legendary Tex Schramm.

“Our motto with the Cowboys used to be, ‘Championships were won in the spring getting ready for the draft,’ ” says Brandt, now NFL.com’s senior analyst.

He cited Tex Schramm, the Hall of Fame Dallas president and general manager whose emphasis on the draft helped the Cowboys morph from a 1960 expansion squad into “America’s Team,” perennial Super Bowl contenders in the 1970s.

“Tex felt that building through the draft was paramount,” Brandt says.

Schramm has plenty of disciples.

So who is doing the job for the Patriots, Giants, Packers, and Chargers? Who is bringing in Tom Brady, Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, and others?

Pioli (in tandem with Belichick), Reese, Chargers GM A.J. Smith and Packers GM Ted Thompson are the architects for contenders that appear built to last for years to come.

All of them have built their teams from the inside out, with strong front lines on both sides of the ball, franchise quarterbacks who should be able to anchor the offenses for the foreseeable future

What about the Dolphins?

That brings us to the Miami Dolphins. They have the first pick in the draft, but need a lot of players. There is always the pressure to sign the star quarterback, but don’t forget the plan.

Build your lines.

Then get your quarterback.

It won’t be a popular move in Miami to pass on top rated Matt Ryan at quarterback, but Miami needs so many players, including lineman, that they may trade down and take a Jake Long from UM that could anchor their line for 10 years. That is how great teams are built.

Let’s not forget how much a number one pick at quarterback can cost as well.

Also, the financial obligation that goes with the top choice is steep. JaMarcus Russell, the top pick in 2007’s draft, battled over contract details with the Raiders a year ago before reaching a six-year, $60 million agreement. source

The Miami fans would probably cry, because they want excitement, but don’t forget the plan.

NFL Football Fan Question Would you have the guts to follow the plan?

LaDainian Tomlinson – who was that masked man?

What was going on here?

Sure the Patriots won the game against the Chargers and now will face the Giants in the Super Bowl in Arizona, but what exactly was going on?

The Chargers were not telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. In fact, far from it.

It seems that Rivers was hurt more than we thought and so was LaDainian Tomlinson.

Let’s talk Chargers and then we will finish up by talking Patriots.

Ready? Here goes.

In a shameful act of reporting, Deion Sanders questioned LT’s manhood.

Deion? Wasn’t this the guy known as a cover defensive back, because he could not really hit guys? Wimp. Who is he to question a running back of LT’s stature?

Anyway, the Chargers were pulling some fast ones on the Patriots and the public.

First, Rivers.

While confirming that he needs surgery on his torn right anterior cruciate ligament, the quarterback revealed for the first time that he had arthroscopic surgery to clean out the joint a week earlier in order to play in the AFC championship game source

While leading all of us to believe Billy Volek would play quarterback and that Philip Rivers would have to limp on to the field, Rivers was secretly having surgery to get him on the field.

Rivers, lauded by his teammates for his gutsy play, said he’d like to have surgery as soon as possible on the torn ACL. “I’ll be ready by training camp,” he said.

Now how about LT?

Tomlinson missed Wednesday’s practice but worked out the rest of the week and wasn’t mentioned on Friday’s injury report. He hurt his left knee against the Colts, with the team saying then it was hyperextended, Tomlinson said after Sunday’s game that he has a sprained medial collateral ligament.

Tomlinson said he re-injured the knee when he was hit on the first play from scrimmage against the Patriots. He carried only twice, both in the opening drive. He caught a short screen pass the following series before retiring to the sideline for good, with more than 9:45 left in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, it was announced in the press box that Tomlinson had a “sore knee” and that he “can return.”

LT may describe it as a sore knee, but no one is going to play running back with a torn MCL. No one.

Deion, who had an out, the same one that we do, thinking LT was able to play, could not leave it at that and keep flapping his big mouth.

Sanders said he was under the impression that Tomlinson was close to 100 percent. “I have expectations, and when you don’t meet my expectations, you open yourself for us to try to guess,” Sanders said. “Now what’s the problem? You’re a big-time player. And big-time players must play big-time games.”

Sanders also said he thought Tomlinson’s injury would need to warrant a surgery “for him to get a pass on this one.”

To say the least, LT was not happy about those statements.

Tomlinson said he understands that teams don’t like to let opponents know what’s going on, and that it might lead to players’ toughness being questioned.

“I think the funny thing to me is, all the things I’ve played with through my career and haven’t missed a game, now all of a sudden I’m not tough?” he said. “You think I just wanted to sit on the sideline and not go, in the championship game? You think, me? Come on, man, that’s ridiculous.”

Team’s hiding injuries? No big deal really. All part of the cat and mouse game of the NFL pregame preparations.

The Big Story is the Patriots

Maybe the bigger story here is that the Patriots, Tom Brady, Randy Moss, and the gang, did not face the Colts and Peyton Manning, Packers and Brett Favre, or the Chargers and a healthy LT. If they beat the Giants and go undefeated then years later you will only see their record and remember them as a great team.

It is not the Patriots fault, but it sure would have been nice to see them play the next 3 strongest teams. Actually, since the Colts and Chargers played each other, that could never happen, so let’s make it the next 2 strongest teams going into the playoffs.

In all fairness the Giants have to be labeled the next strongest team at this time, with a chance to be the strongest.

Will the Patriots be a team of destiny and end the season undefeated?

The Giants and Eli Manning may have some say in that!

NFL Football Fan Question Are you picking the Patriots?

Tom Brady confused by all the open receivers

There it is.

It is out on paper. The big prediction.

New England will handily defeat the San Diego Chargers.

Come on, you know the game you really wanted was the Colts playing the Patriots. It is the missing matchup of red hot Peyton Manning firing bullets all over Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. And don’t make me spell Mass a what chetts.

Oh yeah, a stadium named for razors, what could be more apt. Tom Brady is a triple blade with all his weapons and Peyton Manning is a cordless electric with rotating heads acting smooth and easy.

Instead we get the banged up chargers playing a replacement blade in Billy Volek.

Now the matchup you are waiting for is Brett Favre and the Packers against the Patriots in the Super Bowl. San Diego has become the kid brother being pushed around.

Peyton and Brett discussing the awesome Billy Volek

Philip Rivers

There is the news that Philip Rivers may play.

Rivers returned to the practice field Friday for the first time this week and sounded ready to go.

“I think honestly, given the magnitude of the game and given the situation, if I’m out there as I plan to be for the first snap and throughout the game, it won’t have an effect at all,” he said.

Chargers coach Norv Turner is taking a more cautious approach. He listed Rivers as doubtful and said it would be a gametime decision. source

Uhh, hard to throw when you are on crutches. Tough to escape that pass rush, too.

But before we continue down the litany of injured players and decide who will play and who won’t play, why don’t we think about how Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker and company will score so many points that it won’t matter.

Shawne Merriman

Are Chargers fans thinking Shawne Merriman will have Tom Brady running all over the field? Not according to Gil Brandt. Gil says most of San Diego’s interceptions are because of the rush of Shawne Merriman or Shaun Phillips. Too bad Merriman will be blocked by Matt Light.

Light, who was selected to start in the Pro Bowl, is having his best year in the NFL. He’ll get a good test against Merriman. In the Week 2 meeting, the Pats threw 10 consecutive passes in the first two series — nine of those plays came with a no-huddle and eight came from a shotgun formation. That makes it tough on pass rushers. Light is a sound player who rarely makes a mistake. source

Merriman will still force Tom into some quick throws, but isn’t that what Tom seems to do best with that quick release and pinpoint accuracy?

Scheduling the Chargers

You wonder if the schedule maker has done the Chargers any good?

The last 6 games of the regular season after losing to the Jaguars, the Chargers basically played nobody. They won all those games and you can’t blame the Chargers for the schedule, but they were untested during that time. Can you go untested and stay sharp? Who knows? They did manage to beat the Colts. Maybe this is just a bit of over thinking on my part.

During that same time period the Pats had to play the Steelers, arch rival Jets, and Giants. Now they did have a bye week when Miami came into town.

Antonio Gates vs. Randy Moss

Antonio Gates had 75 catches and most likely will not play in this game the second most catches on the Chargers was LT with 60, but by a wide receiver was Vincent Jackson with 41.

And keep in mind, Billy Volek threw 10 passes all year with a 0 qb rating.

Contrast this with the fact that Randy Moss caught 98 passes for the New England Patriots and Randy was second in receptions for the Patriots! Wes Welker caught 112.

Tom Brady threw 578 passes with a QB rating of 117.2.

San Diego will need Philip Rivers to play, heck, maybe they need Brett Favre to play for them and LaDainian Tomlinson to be able to move on his hyper extended knee to stand any chance at all.

NFL Side note: Your intrepid author will send you to the poor house if you have been betting the farm on his picks. All picks are the sole property of the author himself, who does not bet and if he did, could make a living betting against himself.

To end this rambling, let’s pick the Patriots to beat the Chargers.

NFL Football Fan Question Who are you picking?

Hey, Tom Brady, why is Philip Rivers so much better than you?

What?

What are you saying?

Coach Bill Belichick picked the San Diego Chargers to win the Chargers/Patriots game on Sunday.

You mean he came out in public saying his team would lose to the Chargers?

Well, no.

So you are just pulling my leg, right?

Not exactly. Belichick had a team meeting and ripped the Patriots up and down and spoke so highly of the Chargers that he had the team believing the Chargers would win, unless the Patriots buckle down.

Huh?

So Belichick did what he did best; he walked into the meetings on Monday and ripped his team to shreds, all while building the Chargers up to be some football Goliath without weakness.

Forget the records, the point spread and the hype; according to Belichick this is 1916, the Chargers are Georgia Tech and the Pats are Cumberland.

“He put fear into us by going over everything we did wrong and everything they’ve done right the last two months,” fullback Heath Evans said Wednesday. “He was convincing,”

Belichick’s weekly servings of humble pie have become the stuff of legend around here. It’s one reason the Patriots are 17-0 and have avoided the overconfidence that has helped derail undefeated seasons for 35 years. source

It seems Bill is the master at this.

“Bill was just stating the facts and the truth (opposed) to you all telling us how great we are when we’ve still got work to do,” running back Kevin Faulk said.

Tom Brady, without the assistance of notes, rattled off a litany of impressive statistics about the Chargers’ defense that had obviously been pounded into his head.

“They’ve got (49) turnovers this season, averaging three a game. They’ve got five in the playoffs, given up 13 points a game in the last eight weeks, and have been undefeated since Thanksgiving,” he said, hardly taking a breath. “They’ve got (20) sacks between (Shawne) Merriman and (Shaun) Phillips and I think 42 sacks as a team, No. 1 in turnover differential …”

Belichick had gone so far as to call San Diego the “best team in the AFC” that, along with the Jacksonville Jaguars, had “dominated the league” during the second half of the season.

Why would Bill do this? Because overconfidence sometimes begins a team’s fall from grace. Add in the fact that the log winning streak begins to play on players minds. They begin to play not to lose, instead of playing to win. It can be a disease.

Tom Izzo

Your intrepid author can witness this locally with the great coach Tom Izzo of the Michigan State Spartan basketball team. In their most impressive victories, Tom will find the most to criticize. Tom learned this technique from his mentor, Magic Johnson’s coach, Jud Heathcote.

There is a great story about Jud. After he retired and moved back out west where he started, his former assistant coach’s son became the coach at nearby Gonzaga. His name was Dan Monson. His father Don Monson and Jud used to go to Dan’s house after each home game to help critique Dan’s coaching job.

Dan recounted that Jud and Don would rip him up and down and literally dissect the team to pieces, nothing positive. And this would be after a 25 point blowout victory!

Guess they did not want Dan to get a big head.

Just like Coach Bill Belichick does not want the Patriots to get a big head.

Respect for your opponent goes a long way in providing the proper mental atmosphere for victory. Bill knows this and makes sure it takes place.

Randy Moss would like to run away from controversy
Randy Moss the All Pro receiver has been here all year.
He plays for the New England Patriots at wide receiver. Randy eats right, shows up for practice early, runs great routes, and is a great teammate.
Wait, Randy, Thee Randy Moss does all those things?
Yes, he does.
After controversial years at Minnesota and Oakland, Randy has matured and sees his chance to be great and play for great team. He has been the model citizen.
Until now.

Until now.

As often is the case with Randy G. Moss – as he’s referred to in Broward County (Fla.) case DVCE08000315 – the details are sketchy, the facts few, the conclusions varied.

What’s undeniable is that as the Patriots prepare to face the San Diego Chargers in the AFC championship game on Sunday, the circus that inevitably comes with Moss’ brilliant catches finally came to town. source

The timing could not be worse.

With Sunday’s game with the San Diego Chargers looming, there is little need for off the field distractions.

None the less, it is there.

According to the Boston Herald, the court papers allege that during a Jan. 6 incident at Washington’s Fort Lauderdale home, Moss committed “a battery upon (Washington) causing serious injury. (Moss) refused to allow (Washington) to seek medical treatment.”

It also claims the two have had an “intimate relationship” that dates back 11 years and that Moss has a drug or alcohol problem.

Did they say “Drug or Alcohol problem”?

Randy Moss, of course, issued the standard denials.

“This is a negative,” he said of the latest allegation, “a black cloud hanging over my head, and that’s something that I did not want coming into the season. … Everything I tried to do from getting here early, to make sure I eat the right food, all the way to practicing and playing, I wanted all of that to be A-plus.

“Everything’s been positive, so why would I bring something negative on. As much as I care and love the game of football and love my teammates, I would never put myself or them in a situation of something like this.” source

Among other things the women said she was denied medical treatment by Randy Moss.

Washington alleged Moss refused to allow her to seek medical treatment.

“She has her own house. She has her own car,” Moss said. “So how am I going to deny someone medical attention when you live by yourself and have your own vehicle?”

Here is the suspicious part. A man representing the woman asked for a 6 figure payoff to not take this public. Huh?

Sometimes it is not good to be a public figure with a lot of dough.

New England needs a focused Randy Moss and even though Coach Bill Belichick says to concentrate on football, it may not be easy. The timing of the whole deal adds to the suspiciousness of the whole episode.

When Tom Brady goes back to throw, he better hope that the unfettered Randy Moss is out there making the catch.

NFL Football Fan Question Have you ever thought of the downside of being a public figure?

Philip Rivers may play on one leg
Somewhere the Chargers have to be feeling a slap in their face.
Why?
Because the Patriots did not want to face Peyton Manning and the Colts. They knew if Peyton got the Colts offense rolling, he could put up enough points to win the game.
So they want to play the Chargers?
No, they want to play the Detroit Lions, but it came down to the Chargers or Colts. In that case, they would prefer the Chargers.

Besides Peyton Manning is there a reason?

Oh, yeah! To begin with the Chargers are a little banged up at the crucial positions. Antonio Gates has a sprained big toe. LaDainian Tomlinson has a bruised knee. Philip Rivers has a problem with his right knee.

Philip Rivers is the key. Without Rivers, Billy Volek is your starting QB.

Can Rivers play?

Chargers coach Norv Turner said Rivers suffered an MCL sprain of his right knee and is “day-to-day.” Rivers is not expected to practice until late in the week.

“It’s questionable if he will play but he’s got a chance,” Turner said. source

Earlier this year the Patriots dominated the Chargers and based on that game it seems somewhat a miracle that they are back, but this is not the same Chargers team. That earlier team was just getting to know Coach Norv Turner. They got their act together as the season wore on.

Now it is playoff time and that is why Coach Turner is the coach.

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith, I believe, also deserves a great deal of credit for making an unpopular decision last year (firing Marty Schottenheimer) because he felt the biggest obstacle facing the team was the playoffs (not the regular season) and that Schottenheimer didn’t have what it takes to get the team over the hump. source

You only have to look at things through the eyes of the New England Patriots fans to really see the uphill battle facing the San Diego Chargers.

The Patriots opened as 15-point favorites against the Chargers, and that number could go higher as the San Diego injury situation unfolds. Tens of thousands of Patriots fans are scrambling this week to get to Glendale, Ariz., for the Super Bowl, and most of them will book nonrefundable flights. Why not? The players and coaches have to keep up the charade; the fans and media do not. This is such a lopsided matchup that Tom Brady [stats] is thinking of spending a couple of days in Mexico with Jessica Simpson, just to make it fair. source

Tim Ryan, former defensive tackle for the Chicago Bears now Sirius NFL host, thinks the Chargers have a chance to slow down the Patriots vaunted offensive machine.

“Their ability to cover and their ability to force turnovers gives them a great shot to at least limit what Tommy can do,” Ryan said. “They are also very good tacklers. So yeah, they have a chance. Will they do it? I don’t think so, but I think when you size up all of those dynamics of them as a defense, they’re salty, they’re aggressive, they like to blitz, they can rush the passer, they can play coverage.

“I think they have the pieces in place to be able to match up with New England. They’re a whole different animal now than when they played them in September.” source

Even if they do slow down the Pats on offense and stop Randy Moss, can they score enough points without Rivers to contend?

All the Patriots know is that it is not Peyton Manning, no matter who is the quarterback.

NFL Football Fan Question Do you give the Chargers a chance?
