The younger Palin was not the only target of Letterman’s jests, however.  He also said that Governor Palin “bought makeup from Bloomingdale’s to update her ’slutty flight attendant’ look” during his “Top Ten Highlights of Sarah Palin’s Trip to New York” segment.

Of course, Palin and her husband, Todd, did not find the jokes amusing and fired back saying: “Laughter incited by sexually perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands – that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.”

When I read her retort, I was confused and apparently Letterman was too.  He had aimed the jokes at Palin’s 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, who recently became a mother, and did not realize that it was her 14-year-old daughter, Willow, that had accompanied the governor to New York.

After he realized his mistake, he issued an apology of sorts.  Here’s a video of the apology along with highlights from the feud from earlier in the week:
