Why is Poker on TV So Entertaining?

I’m taking a break in the action from Cowboys Poker to pose this question to you.
Before I started watching poker on ESPN, I would have never thought it would have been a good watch. Mostly its just guys sitting around a card table talking and playing poker. That doesn’t sound like the recipe for success, but it is.
Of course hole cam brings the game to a much bigger dimension. If you can’t see the cards it’s fun to guess for a little while but eventually starts dragging. Plus before hole cam there was none of the top announcers that make …read more
Showing Up Your Opponent

In the video clip below, Scotty Nguyen pulls the wool over Humberto Brenes’ eyes. The clip is dated so Humberto is not the same Humberto we know today. The “chark” didn’t seem to be a part of his repertoire back then and he didn’t say his name over and over. Scotty bluffs Humberto out of his raise (may have been reraise) and then shows 83o. Humberto had A10. I’m not a big fan of hard playing A10 and this hand was a good example of why. Once you push and get pushed back, you’re presented with a very hard call …read more
Michael DeMichele on Scotty Nguyen’s Tantrum
According to Michael DeMichele (not pronounced with the Michelle), no bad blood at the table with Scotty Nguyen after all is said and done, though I imagine Erick Lindgren would have a little bit more to say about it.
I like how Michael seems humble and worried that Erick and Scotty are upset about him ‘putting on a show’ when Scotty is always the one getting the crowd to cheer for him, dude can’t take it both ways it seems. If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out.
On the same coin, if you can’t play like an adult, you shouldn’t …read more
Scotty Nguyen Needs an Ego Check
Scotty Nguyen just made my top poker chodes list.
He was already up there, but man, what a self-bloated ass.
If all this weren’t completely in earnest from him, I’d laugh it off, but dude really thinks he is the only one on earth who can play poker.
Message to poker players: this is a game. Thinking you are unstoppable because you win a few major events (after entering tons) is like thinking you could out-mind Einstein just because you won a really intense game of Trivial Pursuit.
Supposedly there’s a big snafu on Nguyen’s behavior during the final table of the $50k …read more
WSOP Bracelets are mostly Men’s
Overheard tonight on the 2007 WSOP Main event, from an amateur and rather rugged-looked long-haired player late in the game after getting busted in a huge pot by Scotty Nguyen:
“Gitchee another bracelet.”
Only in poker or trailer park honeymoons does it come out quite like that.
