Spain Wins European Basketball Championship

Spain completed its rise to the top of the European basketball world by winning the country’s first European basketball championship. After finishing second six times, Spain was finally able to get over the hump by beating Serbia.
Span versus Serbia turned out to be no contest. Spain got up early and cruised to a 85-63 victory. Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Rudy Fernandez of the Portland Trail Blazers chipped in with 15 points. Uros Tripkovic led the way for Serbia by scoring 15 points.

Ivanovic Withdraws from Olympic Tennis Competition

The #1-seeded player in the women’s Olympic tennis competition, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia (pictured above at the Olympic Opening Ceremonies), withdrew from the event on Sunday because of a lingering injury to her right hand that has kept her from practicing.
The 20-year-old Ivanovic won the 2008 French Open and finished second in the 2008 Australian Open.
She will be replaced in the Olympic competition by Tzipora Obziler of Israel.
