With the recent changes mentioned at Microsoft and Ray Ozzie beginning to take over the reigns from Bill Gates. Microsoft’s products will begin to take on more of a service mentality than the software mentality that’s built Microsoft to what it is today. But what’s the big difference?

Software is a single product, one-time sale type of item. Services on the other hand is something there is an ongoing fee to use. I relate it to something like your utility bills. I’m not sure I really like the idea of paying a regular fee to use something, I want to buy something once and use it until I determine I need to change. That however is where I believe the “software” itself has become a service already. Software regularly gets updated with new versions. I update my copy of Microsoft Money every year, is that any different than a service really?
