The Dallas Mavericks were reportedly looking for a shooting who could spread the floor. Early this week, the Mavs found what they were looking for. Tim Thomas, who has been one of the better outside shooting bigmen in the NBA over the last decade, has decided to join the Mavs. He will reportedly receive a one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum.

Last season, Thomas split time between the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks. His best stint was with the Knicks. In 36 games, the 6-foot-10 power forward averaged 9.6 points. 3.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists, while shooting 46.1% from the floor, 42.1% from beyond the three-point line and 80.6% at the charity stripe.

In Dallas, Thomas will be asked to open driving lanes for the team’s stars such as Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard and the newly acquired Shawn Marion. He can open those lanes by pulling opposing bigmen out of the lane with is outside shooting.

Thomas was the 7th overall pick of the 1997 draft. Although he never has lived up to the potential he illustrated in college at Villanova, Thomas has evolved into a useful role player.

The Grizzlies will reported receive Jerry Stackhouse, Quincy Douby and approximately $2 million. The Raptors are said to be getting Antoine Wright and Devean George.

Marion is far and away the biggest name in this trade. In Dallas, Marion will likely play small forward in a starting lineup that will feature Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Josh Howard and Marcin Gortat.

With the other teams in the Western Conference stacking up with talent, the Mavs have now remained in the mix by re-signing Kidd, signing Gortat and trading for Marion.

Shawn Marion wants to be traded. Now, what on Earth could make a reasonably sane basketball player want to stop playing with Steve Nash? The Matrix himself answers:

“I’m tired of hearing my name in trades,” Marion said by phone from his Chicago home. “I love my fans in Phoenix, but I think it’s time for me to move on.”

To recap, the Phoenix Suns were thinking about trading Shawn Marion. Shawn Marion didn’t like that the Phoenix Suns were thinking about trading him. Naturally, Shawn Marion now wants the Phoenix Suns to trade him because he’s mad that the Phoenix Suns were thinking about trading him. That sentence is about to eat itself.

Really though, is it really that insulting for someone to attempt to trade you for Kevin Garnett? So insulting that you’d want to leave a team that’s perfectly built for your skill set? So insulting that you don’t want Steve Nash setting you up for bunnies for 48 minutes a game? Oh well, he probably has a good plan for where he wants to end up.

So where would he like to go?

The Lakers look good to him.

“You have a great organization, great ownership there with the Lakers. I don’t see no problems with playing there,” Marion told The Sporting News.

Oh, I see, he’s delusional.
