We’ve got a healthy dose of news for you today, including a few new updates that should be hitting the PlayStation Network later today. Keep reading for the headlines:

• Following the release of Bejeweled 2, Popcap has announced that another popular casual gamewill be making its way to the PSN: Zuma.
• This week’s LittleBigPlanet update will see the release of the previously announced WipEout HD costumes, as well as some bonus stickers.
• SingStar is going wireless, with new wireless mics coming out in March.
• Mirror’s Edge is getting another dose of DLC, with a second batch of time trial maps.
• Next week’s PSN update will see the release of the PSP space shooter No Gravity.
• On March 5 a new content pack will be hitting Unreal Tournament 3, which adds new maps, units, vehicles, characters and Trophies.

Today in PlayStation: February 19, 2009

It’s Monday, and man am I excited. Not only is flOwer coming out this Thursday, but we have confirmation of a former Xbox 360 exclusive getting a sequel on the PS3. It’s a good time to be a gamer. Check out the rest of today’s headlines:

• Dead Rising 2 has been confirmed, and it’s coming to the PS3. Unfortunately, we have virtually no details on the zombie game, though they should be coming out soon.
• The SingStore is getting a hefty update this week, though the new tracks aren’t the biggest releases available.
• Yet another Bleach fighting game is coming out, and it’ll be hitting the PSP.
• Though the party pack was just released, Criterion has already announced what is next for Burnout Paradise, with the upcoming cops ‘n robbers pack.
• The Punisher: No Mercy has a release window, and should be hitting the PSN later this Spring.
• 24 companies have been given licenses to develop for Home, including Atlus, Q?, and SNK.

Today in PlayStation: February 9, 2009

The PSM has been on a brief hiatus, but we’re back, and with a bevy of new PlayStation news. There’s something for pretty much anyone here, ranging from JRPG news to karaoke and racing game updates. Check out the headlines for more:

• Motorstorm: Pacific Rift is getting its first big update, which should fix most of the problems gamers have been having with the off-road racer.
• While PS3 gamers may have missed out on the first Dead Rising, it looks like the inevitable sequel may indeed be coming our way. Keep your fingers crossed.
• The wait is finally over, and the countdown on the Final Fantasy XIII website has led to…a new trailer.
• Shin Megami Tensei fans are in luck, as Atlus has announced Devil Summoner 2, which will be coming to the PlayStation 2 on May 12. But act quick, as there will apparently be very “limited quantities.”
• The SingStore is getting updated with a bunch of new songs, ranging from Kylie Minogue to Wings.
• Though it’s quite late, Capcom is insisting that the European version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is coming eventually.

5. Pure

With all of the great racing games on the PS3, you’d be forgiven for missing out on Pure. After all, MotorStorm does an excellent job of fulfilling your off-road racing needs. But if you love high-flying ATV action then you really should pick up a copy of Pure. The heights are dizzying, the tricks are crazy, and the speed is intense.

4. Alone in the Dark: Inferno

The early versions of Alone in the Dark were critically panned, and with good reason: the game was a frustrating mess. And though it still isn’t perfect, the much delayed PS3 version is much improved. The game has some truly epic moments, which almost make up for the more frustrating ones. Add in some beautiful graphics and you have a title that is worth at least a rental.

3. Siren: Blood Curse

If there is one thing the PS3 needs more of, it’s good horror games. Fortunately, Siren: Blood Curse fits the bill perfectly with a creepy atmosphere and tense battles. Unfortunately, the game was often overlooked due to its delivery method. You can’t buy Siren on a Blu Ray disc, instead it is only available as a series of episodic downloads. The process is time consuming, and all together the episodes are the most expensive thing on the PlayStation Network. But if you’re a horror fan, there really isn’t much to compare it to on the PS3.

2. SingStar

With all of the peripheral heavy music games dominating the charts, the SingStar series is often forgotten. But for fans of drunken (or non-drunken) karaoke singing, there really is nothing else. The game is remarkably well put together and features a great mix of different types of songs, which can of course be beefed up by downloading new songs from the SingStore.

1. Valkyria Chronicles

Unlike its predecessor, the PS3 has not seen a flood of Japanese role-playing games. Yet, when an excellent one comes along, like say Valkyria Chronicles, it sells extremely poorly. It may not be a traditional RPG, with its combination of real time and turn based strategy, but its a compelling game nonetheless. In addition to the unique combat, the game has a beautiful art style and a very compelling alternate history story. A must have for RPG fans.

The Top 5 PS3 Games You Probably Missed

Well, Friday is finally here, and as the snow quickly forms mountains outside it feels like the perfect time to do some serious gaming. Thankfully the PlayStation Network has plenty of great new games, add-ons, and demos to spend some time with. Here are the headlines for today.

• LittleBigPlanet has received an update, which improves the search functionality in the game and adds an in-game store, the LittleBigStore, naturally.
• In other LBP news, next week will see the release of Metal Gear Solid themed costume and item packs.
• If you’ve yet to play the terrific WipEout HD, a demo will be hitting the PlayStation Network on Christmas Eve.
• If you need some help getting in the holiday spirit, check out the latest SingStore update, which will bring all sorts of Christmas themed songs to sing along to.
• Capcom has announced that Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has shattered sales records, selling upwards of 250,000 copies since launching on the PSN.

Whew, it’s a busy day in PlayStation news today, so let’s just head straight into the headlines.

• Media Molecule has revealed the first downloadable level pack for LittleBigPlanet, which has a very festive theme. The pack includes Christmas themed costumes, objects, decorations, and stickers, all for just $2.99. Expect to see more of these in the future.
• The PS2 versions of SingStar are finally backwards compatible with the PS3 version.
• Despite Sony’s denials, rumors suggest that games for the next iteration of the PSP are already in development.
• Gabranth from Final Fantasy XII will be in the upcoming fighter Dissidia, though in what capacity we still don’t know.
• A fresh batch of screens from Resident Evil 5 have been released, and man do they look sweet.
• PlayStation Home may not be all that impressive right now, but Sony is taking you suggestions on ways to improve the service.
• The PS3 version of Fallout 3 has been patched, and among other things, now supports Trophies.

Well, it’s Wednesday, but thankfully we have plenty of PlayStation news to help you get over the mid-week hump. From karaoke to maids to energy drinks, todays headlines have it all.

• Karaoke fans should take note, as the SingStar team has promised to add over 60 new songs to the SingStore over the next few months.
• If you want to get an early glimpse of Killzone 2, make sure to check out G4’s X-Play tomorrow night.
• It looks like a few more PSOne games will be coming to the PlayStation Store, including Rayman 2 and Medal of Honor.
• The PSP will be getting a strange 2D fighter in Japan, which pits maids against one another.
• In case you don’t have enough fighting games to play, Tekken 6 is on its way, and will be hitting the PS3 next Fall.
• Red Bull is the first sponsor to jump aboard the Home bandwagon.

5. Lengthy Installs

There’s nothing worse then downloading a new game off of the PlayStation Network, getting ready to play, and then realizing it still has to install. This process tends to take as long, if not longer, then the actual download. But what’s worse, unlike downloading, this process can’t be done in the background, meaning you are stuck staring at a slow moving bar.

4. Frequent Game Updates

Now this is something I ran into not once, but twice last night. I played a little of both LittleBigPlanet and WipEout HD, and before being able to play either game, I had to download a mandatory update. I couldn’t do it later, I had to do it now or I couldn’t play. And like the installs, this can’t be done in the backgroung. These updates seem to happen way too often, and though they obviously improve the quality of the game itself, the frequency and length of them prevents you from enjoying a game right away.

3. Dust!

We’ve all seen the pictures of the dusty PS3 that was refused warranty by Sony. And while that’s an extreme example, the shiny black surface of the PS3 sure seems to attract dust bunnies. Even though mine is locked away behind a sheet of glass beneath the television, I still have to dust it almost daily.

2. USB Cord

One of the best, unhearalded innovations this console generation is the fact that wireless controllers are now the norm. Playing without a wire is just so damn convenient, so much so that it can be tough to go back to classic wired controllers. Which is what you have to do if your Sixaxis or Dual Shock 3 ever runs out of juice. The controller has to be plugged in to be charged, which is reasonable. But what isn’t reasonable, is that the cord is only a few feet long, meaning that I’m stuck with burning eyes from sitting too close to the screen.

1. Lack of Backwards Compatibility

Now this is  may not be a problem for those of you lucky enough to have purchased a launch window PS3, but those of us with newer models are stuck not being able to play PS2 games on our PS3. Considering how many great games Sony’s previous console had, this is really a shame. What’s worse is that I’m stuck with yet another console under the TV so that I can still have random SingStar parties or lengthy Disgaea marathons.

The Top 5 PS3 Annoyances

5. Eternal Poision

Atlus has done an incredible job of supporting the PS2 in its later years, and it’s still going strong. Next week will see the release of Eternal Poison, a tactical RPG, with some Pokemon-like demon collection elements. One of the key draws of the game is its dark atmosphere, complete with demons, monsters, and plenty of kidnapped princesses. Bonus: like most recent Atlus releases, the game will come packed with a copy of the original soundtrack.

4. Tomb Raider: Underworld

You know, Lara Croft is a lot like the PS2. She may have been around for a while, but she’s still going strong. Her latest outing takes place directly after the events of Tomb Raider: Legend, helping to fill in some of the narrative gaps left by that game. The game promises a much more interactive environment compared to its predecessors, a more able Lara, and plenty of new tombs to be raided.

3. SingStar

Fans of karaoke know, SingStar is perfect for a night full disturbingly terrible drunken singing. Despite the series’ shift to the PS3, new editions keep on coming out for the PS2. So if you’re looking for some more songs to stretch out your vocal cords to, check out some of the recent releases, including SingStar Country, Legends, and Pop Volume 2.

2. Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories

Kingdom Hearts fans who missed out on the GameBoy Advance spin-off Chain of Memories are in for a treat, as December will see the release of an enhanced PS2 version. This update will see the game remade with full 3D graphics, voice acting, an improved soundtrack, and additional cut-scenes and battles. In fact, even if you played the GBA version, you may want to check this out for all the improvements.

1. Persona 4

The best JRPG of last year was a PS2 game, and there’s a good chance this year will be no different. In fact, it may even be the sequel to that game. December 4 will see the release of Persona 4, the latest entry in the long-running Shin Megami Tensei series. This time around the setting has been moved to the Japanese countryside, where a series of mysterious murders have been creeping out the locals. The gameplay looks to be similar to P3, only with a weather system put in the place of the moon phases. But here’s a quick tip: get it early, as stock on these games tends to dry up very quickly.
