I received an email today from a hosting company that one of my clients uses saying that they were no longer going to allow usage of email aliases anymore. In the email they stated that the usage of the aliases may cause their servers to be listed as spammers.

I’ve never heard of this being an issue with servers, so it was a bit of a surprise for me. I’ve been using and recommending using email aliases and forwarders for years. I’ve never read anything else about using them causing spam or causing the email servers to be listed as spammers either.

Has anyone else heard of this?

This would be a huge impact to a variety of users I would expect. No longer could you make use of simple aliases like questions@yourdomain.com to be auto-forwarded to a group of users easily.

Instead the email address would have to be setup with its own account password and login instructions. Then one user would have to manage that account and manually forward to a team of users or figure out some other form of distribution for the emails received.

If you’ve heard of this or have proof that there really is a risk of email hosting servers being tagged as spammers due to alias usage, please let me know.

Taking care of one of my regular Monday morning routines. Doing a quick scan of my email Junk Mail folders and trying to figure out if there’s anything in there important. A very rarely get false positives in my spam filters, but every now and then it does happen so I’ve got to scan quickly.

As I’m scanning I usually do a couple of things to make legitimate messages pop-out a little bit from the rest of the junk in the folders. I’ll sort by name first and quickly delete patterns of emails, then switch to sorting by subject and do the same thing. I’ve found by doing this I can usually eliminate more than 50% of my junk mail quickly. Today I started with 286 messages and after these two steps I had it down to about 120 messages left.

Looking at subject lines closer I began to ask myself exactly who’s actually looking and clicking on this stuff? That’s how it works right? If people weren’t clicking on the messages and the links included in them, spammers wouldn’t be doing it right?

Spelling mistakes, lewd subject lines, false hopes, Nigerian money schemes, and now the ever popular Acai berry. Who’s clicking on this stuff? If you’re reading this and you are, STOP IT!

I’m hitting a little bit of a theme with my posts. Can you tell it’s that time of the week when I go through my spam filters and check for false positives? That’s what I’m doing and I’m reminded of something that to me is extremely easy to identify. I’m not sure why messages fitting this scenario aren’t immediately flagged as spam and never seen by the user.

I don’t know how many times I’ve gone into my email and noticed messages with a weird date and time. In my opinion if an email is sent to me with a "Sent On" date prior to the Pony Express being in service, it’s more than likely a spam email. Even if it’s a legitimate email from a reliable source, I probably don’t want to see it. When they realize I’m not getting their emails or responding, then we can talk about fixing their time server on their computers.

The same would be true for any date where "Sent On" is in the future of the current date. To me those are obvious issues and could be deleted at the server level. Anyone else agree with me here?

I know you can’t clump emails sent in the wee hours of the morning as always spam, I believe they are frequently from senders you may not want to see. Perhaps these could immediately be tagged as junk and kept for review. In fact, I think some email servers already do this as a first level trigger of potential spam sources.

I will regularly sort my Junk Mail folders by "Subject" which for me makes it very easy to scan through subject lines that are usually very similar and the only difference is the spoofed email address they’ve created from the "From" line.

It can depend on your personal preference, sorting by "From" can also be helpful sometimes, especially if you’re looking for a specific address that always seems to get a false positive identification as spam.

Both of these options work far better for me than the default sorting method of "Date".

I’m not sure what gave me the idea to do this but it was interesting the way it turned out. I’ve been tweaking our spam filtering settings for our domains for work and was a bit in awe of the collection of blacklisted words we had collected for our spam traps.

My first thought was to share my list of blocked words with everyone, but I wasn’t sure the best way to share it, so I have the way I’ve embedded it below as code will allow you to hopefully cut and paste it into your own filters. This will let you hit the ground running with some spam traps.

Then I had the idea to paste all the words into Wordle and see what the look of spam words came across as on their site. You see the word art from Wordle above.

Just continue reading to see the code to let you copy and paste the word list. I’m hoping it doesn’t get the page or site blocked because of all the spam words that are in the text. I’m hoping embedding it into the code like this will help. Careful some of the words included are pretty coarse. If you’re not interested don’t click through the read more link.

Gmail is a pretty good mail service provided by Google which strives towards accurately catching spam, and is very successful in catching the phish. One thing that empowers the people behind Gmail is the volumes that Google sees.

The Google Enterprise Mail is apparently a much-in-demand service too and it has a Google Enterprise “spam squad” who welcome spam so as to analyze and counter them. Nearly a month after the new year started, they have posted a retrospective post “2008: The Year in Spam” which you may go through if you have time. Otherwise this summary will suffice.

Closing the McColo Network culled spam by 70% in Nov, 2008, but it has been growing at a rate of 156% ever since. The highest spam last year, however, was on April 23rd, where one undisclosed customer reported receiving 100 emails per minute per user. The unsurprising bad news is that, “All indicators suggest this trend (read increase) will continue as virus, malware, and link-based attacks become both more frequent and more ingenious.” Sigh.

What I observed in my inbox is backed by the report as another growing trend: “emailing spoofed news alerts with URLs that would link to a website hosting the virus.”

Watch out and defend yourself.

There is a Firefox trojan that is trolling around stealing passwords. Read the Larry Seltzer’s post for the story and a suggestion.

Friend Brian got numerous cases with a variant of Win32/FakeSecScan virus in the last couple of weeks and so compiled a helpful one-page PDF called “Beware of Fake Antivirus Programs” (PDF link warning). I have one more thing to add. When you see that popup message, open the taskmanager and kill the browser. Some of the uglier ones of this kind don’t have a better solution.

Computer World has a very alarming story. McColo Corp., a webhosting firm, was taken down a month ago resulting in a 42% drop of spam volume. Slowly, actually quickly, the spam levels are catching up again.

McAfee released its Virtual Criminology report recently. It accuses the governments of turning a blind eye to cybercrime, according to PCWorld. I agree that there is a damn lot to be done, but McAfee’s bombastic style takes away a little credibility, not of the report itself but of the accusation. If say the US government were turning a blind eye, there wouldn’t even be talking about a Center for Cybersecurity Operations, would they?

Blizzard has introduced two-factor authentication in World of Warcraft. On top of the usual password, there will be a six-digit authentication code generated by the %6.50 worth keyfob on-demand for each login.

I received a spam mail in my inbox. It was from a friend. I can’t now remember what it exactly said, but it was something about how eco-unfriendly the Intel Pentium 4 processor is. The mail ended with a warning that a bird would come and get me if I didn’t throw my processor into fire. I, of course, reported it as spam and went on with my normal routine. One couldn’t expect me to really throw it in fire; the processor is as important as my heart.

Later that night as I switched off all the lights and went to sleep I could hear the flapping of wings and see foggy fiery lights outside the translucent panes of the window. I checked to see if it was locked and made a trip across all the rooms checking every single window in the house. One of them in another bedroom had been open.

I wiped the tiny beads of perspiration across my forehead with the back of my palm and peeked outside anxiously. The air was thick with smoke and there was a huge fire at the far end in one direction. I thought I heard something and ducked inside closing the window. My ears were already cold. As I tiptoed back to my bed, I could hear the flapping of wings inside the house. I started closing the door to each room after confirming that each was free of birds. Finally, in my bedroom, I found the bird. It was large, dirty half-white, and gave me a piercing look enough to make my heart stop. I quickly closed the door of that room and assured myself that it wouldn’t bother me for the night.

I then walked into the other bedroom, closed the door shut, locked it from inside, and forced myself to sleep.

After some time, I started feeling lighter. And lighter. I slowly opened my droopy eyes and saw the bird perched on my torso doing something. I didn’t move. It was busy, perhaps sucking my soul, and I felt no weight. I thought I became one with the world.

***

With that scary thought I woke up from my actual sleep realizing all that to be a nightmare. I sat there thinking about the dream. I never finished Sigmund Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams but I had exercised before trying to connect different aspects of my dreams to reality, recording a lot of them dutifully.

First, I blame Tana French’s In The Woods, a wonderful book, for sleep deprivation. I had been reading it late into the nights, the only time I am able to manage to read books these days. Second, I watched a Google Tech Talk about measuring performance that morning — I’m a software performance engineer — and the speaker mentioned how Intel’s policies make it extra hard for the academia in particular in pinpointing the exact reasons for the phenomenon called “measure bias”.

I just wanted to share with you because this is the first time ever that spam played a role in my nightmare, though the spam too had been part of it. Did this ever happen to you?

Disclaimer: I am not accusing Intel of anything. The dream could as well have been about an AMD Athlon processor.
