Speed Run: Mortal Kombat 2 on Sega

It’s time once again for another speed run. This time we present to you Mortal Kombat 2 on a Sega featuring the wild antics of Shang Tsung. Check it out:

Sigh. It’s quite unfortunate, however, that like most speed runs, this speed run of Shang Tsung on Mortal Kombat 2 is tool assisted and played on an emulator. Ahh, but what the heck. It’s still fun watching a character beat up all his opponents from start to finish.
Next time, I’d like to see the player do it without the tool assist. :p

Speed Run: Conan: Hall of Volta

Welcome to another Re:Retro Speed Run. In this post, we feature Conan: Hall of Volta, a 1984 action video game designed by Eric Robinson and Eric Parker, and published by Datasoft. Obviously, the lead character in the game, Conan, is the same Conan created by Robert Howard and played on the big screen by Arnold Schwarzenegger (yeah, the governor of California).

Conan: Hall of Volta was released in 1984, coinciding with the big screen debut of the sequel to the 1982 classic Conan the Barbarian. Oh, and I forgot to mention that Conan: Hall of Volta is a game for the …read more

Speed Run: Myst

What will they think of next? Litil Divil in 30 seconds? I mean, gawd, Myst is a great game for those who want a real video game mindbending challenge, but to make a speed run on it? This guy Guptill89 has probably played Myst more than a thousand times.

Castlevania: No-death run

Hey, these videos may not show the usual speed run, but I tip my hat at the player-cum-video poster’s ability to stay clear of danger. I’m not really a big fan of Simon Belmont, but I’m inclined to give Castlevania on the Nintendo Entertainment System another go after watching these videos:

Oh, and in case you’re wondering if I’m also in the mood to forgive Simon Belmont’s nasty behavior in Captain Nintendo (you know, that Saturday morning cartoon series), it’s a NO.

Tomy’s Digital Derby: My first handheld ‘video’ game

I’ve been racking my brains for the past seven months, trying to figure out the name of my first handheld video game. Well, I’ve found it, and needless to say, it has gotten me excited enough to yell “putik,” a slang of the derogatory term “puta,” which means, among other things, a four-letter word I’d rather not write down here.
It’s the Tomy Digital Derby, and I’ve scoured the web for pictures and videos of this jellopy right after rediscovering its name. I have, however, settled on posting a video of how the Tomy Digital Derby works:

The reason why I put …read more

Whoah! Half-Life in 60 seconds!

And you thought you were good! I found this great video about Half-Life and its main protagonist, Gordon Freeman. At first I thought it was a speed run, since the title, “Half-Life in 60 Seconds,” implied something of the sort.
Well, I was wrong. It’s even better than a speed run. Go check it out:

Speed Run: Goonies on the NES

Yeah, I’m supposed to post only one speed run a month. But, they, times change, and I need this speed run to introduce another old game I’m planning to write about soon. So here it is, The Goonies on the Nintendo Entertainment System:

Stay tuned to Re:Retro for my take on this classic movie tie-in.

Speed Run: Star Fox in less than 20 minutes

It’s time for another speed run, and this month’s lucky pick is Star Fox for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

I’ve only played Star Fox a few times in the past, but if I had a guide like this back then, I’d probably finish it, too … in a few days … or maybe a few months. Haha!

The circus is in town #2!

Yeah, pardon my curiosity. I just had to scan YouTube to look for a video of Circus Atari, since the game cartridge has been sitting on my desk for the past 24 hours and with me trying to figure out the game’s appeal.
After watching this video, however, I suddenly discover why:

It’s got to be the speed of gameplay. I have yet to meet a video game addict who isn’t as addicted to speed as he or she is to a particular game or genre.
Now, pardon me again while I load the game on my dusty Atari 2600 and find out …read more

Contra Speed Run!

Contra Speed Run!

Unfortunately, not by me, but some guy who made a video of his accomplishment on YouTube. I never mastered Contra enough for a speed run, unlike my feats in Super Mario Brothers and Hudson’s Adventure Island, two other excellent titles for the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Nintendo Family Computer.
With enemy fire coming from different directions and rough, sometimes seemingly unnavigable, terrain at every turn, Contra remains one of the hardest games to complete (unless you have four arms, four hands, and 20 fingers and opposable thumbs).
Well, here it is, the Contra speed run. While you’re watching the video, I’ll …read more
