For the most part, in the U.S. Hyundai travels under the radar. The Ford Escape hybrid with FWD has the best fuel efficiency, currently, of any SUV on the market, but there isn’t a factory option for third row seating. That prevents some of us from taking it too seriously. One couple came up with a solution.

While the gas versions of the 2009 Escape and Mariner did improve in gas mileage – by a whopping 1 mpg – the hybrid revisions did not.

Econ Mode allows the engine to run more efficiently by pushing the engine less. It addresses the biggest hits to fuel economy – stomping on the gas and needlessly wasting fuel by accelerating more ferociously than need be – and in doing so, will make a real difference in the miles per gallon seen in real world usage.
