Should Coach Comments be Censored?
October 27, 2009 by Allison Boyer

After this past week, at least two college football coaches were given warnings about negative comments. The two comments in question?
Comment #1:
“I don’t even know why we have replay right now in the Southeastern Conference if they’re not going to utilize it…I hope he’s severely punished if he ever works another SEC game again, because I think it’s completely unacceptable.”
- Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, in regards to a play he thought should have been reviewed and overturned
Comment #2:
“You run another play and you throw an interception or they throw another flag on us — I wasn’t going to let …read more
College Football Week Three 2009 Preview

We’re getting to the point where most teams are actually starting to play some real games now. I say “most” because my beloved Penn State is playing Temple this weekend. You know when Temple last beat PSU? 1941. I mean, they haven’t played every year…but still.
I digress. Let’s check out the AP Top 10 this week:
Florida
Texas
USC
Alabama
Mississippi
Penn State (actually, they’re also #5, it was a tie)
BYU
California
LSU
Boise State
All of the top ten teams are still undefeated, but that’s not surprising since many of them had super easy games the past two weeks – or no game at all (Mississippi already had their …read more
College Football Week Two 2009 in Review

I already talked about the Notre Dame – Michigan Game a little earlier today, but that wasn’t by far the only good game of the week. Week Two was surprisingly interesting. If this is any indication of what the rest of the 2009 college football season is like, it’s going to be an interesting year.
First and foremost, what the crap, Oklahoma State. I think like, the entire state of Oklahoma is bummed out. First, Sam Bradford gets injured. Now this. In case you didn’t watch the game…Oklahoma State, who was ranked #5, got their asses handed to them by Houston. …read more
College Football Week Two 2009 Preview

Perhaps this preview is a little on the late side, since Georgia Tech (#15) already beat Clemson last night, but there are some great games happening tomorrow that I’d like to talk about before I find myself deep in Week Two games. Last week was one of the best Week Ones we’ve seen in years, and I’m hoping that this week is just as good, if not better.
Before we get into the games, let’s look at the Top 10 list for this week:
Florida
Texas
USC
Alabama
Oklahoma State
Mississippi
Penn State
Ohio State
BYU
California
The top five in particular intrigue me. #1 Florida play Troy this week, and try …read more
Fulmer to Return to College Football?
August 18, 2009 by Allison Boyer

Tennessee fans were in an uproar when Phillip Fulmer was fired (or quit, depending on who you ask). Now, the former head football coach is talking about returning to college ball by the start of the 2010 season. And he isn’t just going to accept any old job. According to Fulmer, he’s looking for team in a conference where he can compete on a national level.
“I have a great picture in mind. Somebody that’s committed to winning championships and being the best that they can be, with a chance to compete in a conference that’s nationally recognized. I’m not going …read more
Lane Kiffin Talks about SEC Passion
July 28, 2009 by Allison Boyer

It won’t be long before Lane Kiffin will finally get to show us what he can do as the new head coach for the Tennessee Volunteers. Over the past several months, his comments and actions have rubbed some the wrong way, but Kiffin hasn’t apologized, nor does it look like he will anytime soon.
Recently, Kiffin spoke with WGFX in Tennessee about his job, and he attributes his antics to the fact that the SEC is very, very passionate about football. I wouldn’t totally disagree with him.
The best example I can give you is that in our first year at Southern …read more
Tennessee is Robbing the Recruiting Cradle

At Tennessee, recruiting can’t start early enough.
Recently, Even Berry, brother of safety Eric Berry, has verbally committed to play for Tennessee under Lane Kiffin. That’s great – but Berry is only 13 and hasn’t even played a single high school game yet. However, his coach has said that the quarterback/running back/free safety plays on another level and has natural instinct handling the ball.
Of course, his coach is also his father, James Berry, who also attended Tennessee.
Even has a twin brother named Elliot who is also, apparently, a football start at 13, but hasn’t announced anything about college choices yet, though …read more
Death Threats and College Football
May 31, 2009 by Allison Boyer

Recently, Jonathan Crompton of Tennessee has noted that he has been threatened in the past. The Vols had a mediocre 5-7 season in 2008, and Crompton’s cell phone number and email address circulated (to his annoyance, I’m sure). Some of the calls he got were just pranks…but he also got a few death threats. Says Crompton,
“I really didn’t talk about it that much,” he said. “You don’t say ‘Poor me.’ “
He also admitted that he’d been confronted face-to-face a number of times, and someone wrote negative comments about him on his parent’s mail.He reportedly never told UT staff that he’d …read more
Lane Kiffin: Misunderstood?
May 22, 2009 by Allison Boyer

Lane Kiffin is doing a great job at Tennessee, at least, in regards to national press. Not everything he’s said has been kosher, though, and he’s actually been forced to apologize to other schools because of things he’s said. The school’s athletic director, Mike Hamilton, seems to believe that the new coach is misunderstood, however.
“I have found him to be different from the media persona that was painted of him, stemming from those original February comments,” Hamilton said. “He’s not as cavalier as the media painted him to be.”
The comments in February that are in question were about Florida’s recruiting …read more
Mass Exodus from Tennessee
May 9, 2009 by Allison Boyer

When Lane Kiffin was brought in to coach the Tennessee Volunteers after the resignation firing of beloved Phillip Fulmer after a dismal 2008 season. While many hope that Kiffin will bring the spark back to the Vols, others aren’t happy with the new coaching choice. To date, 11 players are leaving Tennessee to play at other schools.
That number isn’t HUGE, considering that there’s usually a mass exodus when a school brings in a new coach. What really hurts, though, is that Kiffin is losing some huge assets to the Tennessee team. He’s also gone on record as saying that he …read more
